GW spray undercoats are, again in my opinion, a must. Corax White spray is a gorgeous undercoat to work from, as is Chaos Black. Read guides, google shit, don't be afraid to fuck up and remember, if you make a mess of a mini, it's not the end of the world, dump it in dettol disinfectant (MUST be normal brown Dettol) and the paint comes right off. A personal tip from an oldfag.

If you want a paint with a rough finish for armor plating or to give the model a weathered look, you'd be hard-pressed to go wrong with Decorart's Americana series paints. They aren't as smooth or easy to apply as the GW brands or the other top-line brands but if you're playing a faction with a lot of metallic highlights (Iron Warriors come to mind) or which need a sort of trail-beaten look, you can't go wrong.

I need to try that stuff, do they do an equivalent to Fenrisian Grey? On top of that, for weathering tanks don't drybrush, use a sponge. First dab a small amount of metallic paint onto a scrap of sponge then dab it on the model for flaking paint, then use Typhus Corrosion for rust etc. After that pick your mud/dust colour and then again, with an almost dry sponge, rub and scour the model until it looks good and filthy.

They have damn near every color. I'm not joking. It's also really economical and goes on easy.

The downside: It has a really rough, grainy feel when complete, with a matte finish (save for the metallics which are smooth). Your own mileage may vary but I used those to paint most of my Chaos Marines back in the day.
 
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all genders and heretical scumbags who paint filthy Orks in need of a fucking good purge (you know who you are) I present to you my entirely unbiased and True and Honest review of the laser cut terrain kindly sent to me by @DangerousGas for the above purpose. He now has my dox which scares me slightly but it was worth it damint because this thing is cool:

Here modeled by some of Ultramars finest cannon fodder. The balcony section they're standing on should go inside however I have chosen to mount it on the exterior as I'm going to modify and mess about with it.

Scale wise, it's chunky. It'll dominate any battlefield you put it on which is a good thing, makes a nice center piece. There's an optional balcony section that sits atop the lower buttresses but I chose not to use it. I have an idea of what to do with it though.

Construction is slightly fiddly but not absurd. Those little holes you see all contain spacer pegs that have to be sanded to fit. Time consuming but not insurmountable. Any model maker with a steady hand and a decent eye will cope fine.

I really like this thing. It's a blank slate which is nice and because of that it's suitable for both 40k and Age of Sigmar, just decorate it appropriately.

I'm going to do some serious work to this, it's getting painted, modded and added to before I call it finished but it's such a nice blank slate to work from.

Don't worry. My laser cutter isn't quite big enough to go full Auric Blofeldt (unless I fold my victims up with the aid of a hammer).

Glad you like it - I've got a few other bits in the works, too. Now I just need to work out whether Etsy or eBay is a better means for selling this stuff.

That's some tasty Heresy. Your work never ceases to amaze me. My Dark Eldar side project/penance for owing somebody a favor are coming along nicely. I'm really proud of the Archon, I did put some effort into him. I can never get flesh quite right though but meh, I'll learn one day.

So I dug my half finished Storm Talon out of storage and covered up the appalling paintjob I did on it a few years ago. And now we come to the edge highlighting. This thing has more edges than this forum for fucks sake fucking edges fucking everywhere all needing highlighting motherfucker. Anyway that feels better, gonna go highlight some edges. I'll drop a picture when it's done.
 
I'mma start my first Traitor Legion: Emperor's Children. I'm usually more of a Nurgle guy with my collecting, but this time I think I'll go with an infantry-heavy Slaaneshi force.

How you gonna paint em? I've seen some awesome stuff done with silver spray paint and purple varnishes.

Good question. I'm not totally sure yet. I foresee a lot of purple. Never even considered silver, thanks for the suggestion. I'll be sure to scour the internet for ideas.

You need to get that flash, glittery metallic purple and gold look.
 
I'll ask here becuase I figure yall would know. Ages ago I saw a ww1 homebrew rulebook for Only War. None of you would know where to find that would you? I remember it had rules for German, Austrian, and Russian armies and was based on the war of maneuver in the east as opposed to the trench hell of the west.
