If you don't mind me asking, how'd you get the corrosion and grime as well as the flesh tone to look that good on your plague marines?

Fight me IRL and the last thing you'll hear are the words "FOR ULTRAMAR!" (But srsly though Matt Ward and his wanking have turned one of the most badass chapters into a bunch of bookish smurfs who everyone hates and for that he should die. I want to punch his face until he calls me his 'spiritual leige'. Play Space Marine on pc and xbox and you'll see what the Ultramarines SHOULD be.)

I kind of like the idea of 40K but outside of the expensive tabletop, mediocre video games and over 9000 books...is there really any media of interest? It seems like the kind of thing I could get into but...how do you get over that hurdle? Is there even anything beyond the three media types I mentioned?

Some of the video games are good. The Dawn of War series are decent RTS games, at least the first 2 are. Space Marine is a really good cover shooter/brawler with a good story. As for Tabletop, you can play something like KillTeam for fairly cheap and tbh, painting the minis is a matter of choice. The books, don't try and read them all, there are some that are worth it and a lot that aren't. It's like the star Wars extended universe in that respect. If you like the idea of the 40k universe you have to take a plunge somewhere. Once you find something you like it'll all open up for you.

I've played Dawn of War 1 and 2 and just generally find Relic's RTS style to be dull (I didn't hate them as much as Company of Heroes, but nonetheless I found them slow-paced and kind of unengaging in regards to what I expect from RTS). I have played Space Marine which was my main exposure to the series and I remember mostly enjoying. Part of the problem with tabletop is, in addition to the price, I just don't have anyone to play them with.

Guess that leaves me with the books. Any recommendations on where to start?

Or maybe I'm trying to force it to happen and it's just not gonna happen.

40k seems more expensive than it really is, especially if you cut corners like buying generic paints instead of GW/Citadel ones. I can appreciate not having anyone to play with, but it's not too hard to find someone.

TBH, you'd probably be surprised in who you already know that would play but just hasn't brought it up because they think they're the only one interested. I'd encourage you to buy one of these kits, and introduce it to your friends as a board game rather than what people expect it to be.

After that, just go to Walmart/Michael's and get two different cans of spray paint. If you go this route, I have some extra tips to help you keep your costs down.

Edit: Turns out the different sides are molded in different colored plastics, so you don't even need to buy paints!

What @muh_moobs said. Also, ebay is your friend. You can get starter boxes at a decent discount, and sometimes people will unload entire armies for relatively cheap prices.
 
Also the boxed starter set comes with space marines and plague marines, you might be able to find people offloading the faction that they don't play for cheap
 
I don't get to play that often myself, but never discount how fun it is to collect and paint these guys. If you have access to a Hobby Lobby, that will more than take care of all your painting and assembling needs.
