I don't get to play that often myself, but never discount how fun it is to collect and paint these guys. If you have access to a Hobby Lobby, that will more than take care of all your painting and assembling needs.

Agreed. I haven't played a game in some time, but I've been having a ball just collecting and painting and writing fluff for my armies.

Play Space Marine on pc and xbox and you'll see what the Ultramarines SHOULD be.)
Generic template of space marines but better?

I kind of like the idea of 40K but outside of the expensive tabletop, mediocre video games and over 9000 books...is there really any media of interest? It seems like the kind of thing I could get into but...how do you get over that hurdle? Is there even anything beyond the three media types I mentioned?
The Dark Heresy pen and paper RPG is pretty neat. My fantasy used to be that Obsidian would make a CRPG using it when they were working with THQ but...yeah.

I feel like I'm gonna regret responding here lol. Matt Wards Ultramarines stand around and jerk it to the Codex Astartes and act like that makes them a better class of Marine. In Wards blue smurph fairy land this makes them super effective because the enemy always do things that the Codex has an answer for. Remember RG wrote the codex as a formal military manual for Space Marines but until Ward came along they didn't treat it as some infallible holy text that can't ever be disobeyed. In 'Space Marine' one of the first things Titus does is ignore the Codex and talk shit to a lower ranking Marine who points this out. He's then painted as a heretic for doing this despite it, you know, working. The thing is RG didn't write it to be infallible, it's regulations, rules and tactical advice. Every army has that. RG would have respected Titus for being an honorable battle brother who respected the Codex but was smart enough to make tactical decisions on the fly without having to stand around with his mates reciting it until they found a bit that was relevant. I like the Ultramarines because they are fundamentally the 'good guys' as much as anybody in the 40k universe is and once my Ultramarines/Guard army is finished to the point of being playable I'll probably start on something else, haven't made up my mind yet.

All the cool bits about Ultramarines (like them running their own empire within an empire and all the neat complications that entails) get glossed over. Being "the good guys" is fucking boring, and ridiculous in this universe where they're still Catholic space nazis.

Yes I agree, but I still chose them based on my preferences. Generally when I play a game that involves a choice of good or bad my first playthrough is super virtuous, ultra goody two shoes. My second playthrough is ultimate arsehole mode. If I play again I tend to steer down the middle. This is why my first 40k force is Ultramarines. My second is likely to be Necrons or Tyranids and my third, if I get that far will be either another SM chapter or Tau or somebody. It's just how I roll.

The most moral and good Space Marine chapter are the Black Templars.

There is literally nothing wrong with violently working over Xenos, Mutants, heretics or suspected heretics with a chainsword while screaming variations of "NO PITY NO REMORSE NO FEAR!" at the top of your lungs.

And there is also nothing wrong with charging headfirst into melee and beating a suspected chaos cultist into a fine red paste with your own fists.

Codex Astartes be damned, there is nothing wrong with using the book as toilet paper, especially the section on "Number of Marines you can have."

The Black Templars literally did nothing wrong and are the best, most moral people in the galaxy and if you disagree, please follow my good friend Reclusiarch Grimaldus into this dark alley so he may carefully and gently explain why you are wrong.

Orks are da most moral race, warfare is ingrained so deey into their DNA that they can no more live without it than they could air.

Orks have their own moral code which is surprising lase-faire and neutral to most things, hatred and vengence rarely factor into an orks thinking, and when they do it tends to be directed at... odd things, like the Mekboss who wanted to blow up a moon he didn't like, to an Ork genocide or exterminus makes no sense, waste of a good fight.

Orks themselves seekout the strong and as such act as an important bulwark against any one race dominating the galaxy while being too disunified in peace to do so themselves, they're probably the only true-neutral race in fiction done right.

Orks are also incredibly productive and despite what people think intelligent, if the imperium could create warp engines and teleporters from literal scrap they'd probably be in a stronger position than they are now.

In summery orks are da best, everyone else is in joint second place for worst faction, worst being Ultramarines obviously (Ultramarines suck!).

Tyranids are the most moral faction because they don't know what they're doing, they're just following instincts. Everyone else is nazis or commies or serial killers.

Most Tyranids are just automatons, but I remember back in 2nd Edition that some flavor text insinuated that the greater consciousness that drives them knows exactly what it's doing. The Tyranids are everything the Tau aspire to be.

That's part of the reason I like Nids. They're just big eaty bugs doing what big eaty bugs do. No good, no evil, just OMNOMNOM.

"I admire its purity. A survivor, unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality."

I had to take a poetry workshop class (vomits). I submitted for my final poem of the course, "Charge of the Ork Brigade," a parody of "Charge of the Light Brigade." that told the tale of the Ork Warboss "MIGHTY BIG THUNDA" and his merry bunch o' lads rampaging around.

The professor thought it was hilarious.
I thought the career poets in class were going to lynch me after I read it aloud, however.

I'll post a copy of it if you chaps want to read my lunacy

That is quite good work, sir. But wasn't it Tennyson who wrote the original?

Well we already established Ultramarines suck so the discussion had to go somewhere.

All I'm saying is the Tyranids are gods once you go through the simple act of of letting a Genestealer mouthfuck you, is that so wrong?

I don't like them personally because psychic hive-mind removes everything interesting about eusociality when it's just a magic hand wavey thing. The instincts on which hive organisms operate in the real world are fascinating in how their very simple rules give rise to complex intelligent behavior. But almost no scifi or fantasy ever gets that right. It's a shame. I actually have similar issues with the Orks when they're not being played for comedy. There's a lot you can do with the whole "sentient species as a bioweapon" concept, but the people behind the fluff don't tend to do it. The Sranc in R. Scott Bakker's fantasy series are a great example of doing it right, with simply flocking mechanisms being used to drive something akin to battlefield tactics, but not exactly friendly from a marketing perspective given how their creators chose to motivate them for fighting their enemies...

Genestealer cults are actually kinda neat I guess if you like Shadow Over Innsmouth.
