I wish games workshop didn't axe fantasy flight games's license. I really would want to see a second edition of warhammer 40,000 roleplay: only war.
I miss Chaos in the Old World, that was a lovely game.

Get a Trukk and build it without a Roof for the Open-Topped ability. Then your Ork passengers can perform Drive By shootings in the Shooting Phase. So I'm just getting into tabletop warhammer after playing the computer games for many years. My friend has an ork army hes letting me play. I've been researching gameplay but I'd like some real life experience tips from anyone who's ran orks before.

I was about invest in the relic card game just before cancellation was announced, thankfully I didn’t drop the cash because I was about to buy the core and all expansions.

lmao, I didn't even know they made warhammer 40k/fantasy related board games from fantasy flight games. would have been cool to have, but of course it's too late for me now. games workshop are such litigious and all around petty cunts that I will never give them any of my money.I was about invest in the relic card game just before cancellation was announced, thankfully I didn’t drop the cash because I was about to buy the core and all expansions.

They had no choice. FFG was better at world building than GW and their prices were more reasonable. It would make the fans start asking questions.I wish games workshop didn't axe fantasy flight games's license. I really would want to see a second edition of warhammer 40,000 roleplay: only war.
it also seems to me that the emperor has been used by some writers to make him seem like a complete arse more so than would be expected by someone who is the ruler of a soon to be massive empire and protector of humanity.
very good points all around. here is something on a similar topic as well, much in line with your outlook on w40k: https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/cn3wq5/80_of_military_deployments_throughout_80_of_the/I'm just going to say it. And it's gonna be a rant.
A shitload of writers for Black Library (and other media) just meme 40k lore like some normiefaggot that played Dawn of War a few times. If I were GW, I wouldn't let these fanfictioneers jot notes onto a napkin at Bugman's bar, much less write any 40k lore or stories.
The setting is one where frequently the most practical, certain, and often ethical decision is an extreme one... and such decisions often weigh heavily on the conscience of those who have to make those decisions, but the most bitter part is knowing that the ten million people on one planet died to divert tyranids away from the planet of ten billion people. It takes monumental fortitude to be a person that would have to make these kinds of decisions, and those that are well-written often find themselves feeling that crushing weight upon their conscience and sacrifice a little more of the humanity that they held onto.
But then, more often than it should be- and it should never be- Inquisitors are often depicted as Snidely Whiplash, that's just a nasty mean asshole killing people or doing shady shit for no reason other than the writers didn't understand what it would take to be an inquisitor. You don't get there being stupid and selfish, and if you just act like some sociopath and use your position to kill people regularly and eagerly- you're wasting materiel. Sure, human life is the Emperor's Currency... but no Inquisitor would be foolish enough to just light a pile of it on fire because one of the bills might be counterfeit, in lieu of doing an actual investigation to confirm it and determining that this was the only reasonable course of action.
Oh, and Space Marines? Should be, by the lore- tactically brilliant, calculating, and capable of a near clinical pragmatism that is so cold it could frost over their fucking bolters. They are fully aware of the long and difficult and costly process that makes a Space Marine- and trains, sustains, and equips him for battle. Even more so, they are very aware of how much they inspire the regular Guardsmen and citizens to push beyond what they thought they could do and defy the Imperium's most dangerous foes with sheer fervor and balls-out audacity.
But here comes Black Library, that decides to write them as having brilliant tactics such as "Run towards the Hive Tyrant with a chainsaw sword, no helmet, and just scream like a fucking idiot passing a kidney stone the size of a bolter round". Or "Let's just be complete fucktards and do a suicide charge in bright-ass armor with a big goddamned flag, for glory that absolutely no one will survive to talk about".
And yes, I know, 'the rule of cool'... and 'Warhammer 40k is supposed to be absurd'... but that only works when you haven't written lore that directly contradicts this absurd shit. It's hilarious that until 2019's Astartes Youtube fanseries that everyone just skimmed over the core elements of Astartes psychology and decided to write them like third world spearchukkers that got some extra chromosomes to go with their implants.
Yes, I know, Warhammer 40k started off goofy and it was a satire. But this isn't weird 80's dad comic book goofy, this is goofy when they're trying not to be. Or goofy when it's at a point where it looks more out of place than a black dad at a PTA meeting. Shit or get off the refugee.
It's like a being a fucking breakthrough doctor that serves as Chief Physician, and then you turn around and hire a bunch of nigger witch doctors from the Congo that tell people to put chicken bones in their dick-hole and eat albino babies to cure HIV.

yeah I actually don't care about the tabletop either. never even played it, it just looks dull even from a distance. the w40k roleplay books developed by fantasy flight games is what really made me immersed in the universe that is atrociously represented in both video games and the community itself. while it is important to emphasise how epic and destructive technology has become in the 41st millennium by showing titan legions, space marines, greater daemons, etc., the approach taken by games workshop is beyond insufferable. it's like when TV a while ago used to be nothing but reruns of the same dozen wild west films with cowboys in white and black hats. that's basically how I feel about the whole marketing strategy of games workshop.I honestly think the way 40k is played on tabletop is pretty dumb. I think it always should have been a basic skirmish game, with only a few handfuls of infantry and maybe one or two support vehicles like a transport. Imagine what 40k would be like if a normal game only allowed maybe a tank to support squads of infantry, with more focus being on making the most of a small-scale engagement where the average Space Marine player is using about a dozen or so models. Just think of the depth the game could get into on the tactical level, rather than the strategic level.
And it's a piss-poor imitation of strategic-level warfare. It's fucking silly to have a small area that's going to be roughly the size of a shopping center parking lot, and then just cramming it full of infantry and tanks and close air support and having people just blast the fuck out of each other from shouting distance in a battle that's determined by who has the most dudes standing by a spot the size of a small pub table.
I know why they did it- they want people to buy more models, bigger models, etc. I'm not faulting them for wanting to make money. I'm faulting the customers for not using their wallets to encourage GW to make a better war game.
But when the canon reflects the fanfiction writers, what is canon and what is fanfiction?I'm just going to say it. And it's gonna be a rant.

WTF is this HERESY!!! The latest edition of Space Hulk not you.Forgive me if I might divert this thread for a moment, I am the Warmaster Horus though.
Have any of you played much of the latest edition of Space Hulk? A friend brought a copy over yesterday and we played a few games. I had not played Hulk since the second edition, and it feels like the game strongly favors the Space Marines now instead of the Genestealers.
Anyone else feel the same?
I wouldn't be shocked if they nerfed the Genestealer because I do know that for several editions the Tyranids were made worse in each incarnation. This sadly is within Geedubz' purview of making me never buy a thing off of them since fuck that.Forgive me if I might divert this thread for a moment, I am the Warmaster Horus though.

Not really sure any more. But when the canon reflects the fanfiction writers, what is canon and what is fanfiction?
Fully agree, tabletop 40k is pretty retarded. I've been watching casted replays of DoW2 and it just makes so much more sense. I'd love if you started with just a squad's worth of points to spawn with, then had to fight over resource points to be able to call in more units. Have different tiers you have to unlock with said resources so you have to decide are you good and can upgrade, or do you need more guys in the field now.I honestly think the way 40k is played on tabletop is pretty dumb.
