Looks good on everything.

In Dawn of War II, is there a mod or something that'll make gar drops a bit more random?

I always sem to get the same stuff.

Haven't playes 40k in ages, decided to get back in with the new Battle Sisters update. Also combining my regular paint with the new contrast stuff. Liking how it's turning out, still can't do faces, though.

The faces on the new sisters are borked anyway mate. I wouldn't worry about it. What are the contrast paints like? I ordered a load last week for a project after watching a few vids.

They're thick and dry pretty quickly. I find them to be really useful for smaller details but the pooling effect can make larger details like armour panels kind of iffy. They tint white or pale colours, but otherwise act like a strong glaze and shade paint.

They also tint metallic paints.

I only came back to the hobby just before Christmas after not playing since the start of 3rd edition. My only experience in 2nd and 3rd edition was Space Wolves because I thought I was edgy. I now find space marines boring so went with Orks for my first army and I decided Orange was better than Green ya gitz.

Orkz is best! Been working some more on my boyz between the odd commission,

Finished dis git to lead my Storm Korps, particually pleased with his wing-rokkits, also building more Stormboyz for him to lead, i can currently field a full mob of 30 boyz but intend to run 3 squads of 20 when da Korps is finished.

I've also been expanding the armies looted vehicle list with a supakannon bigtrakk and looted landraider battlewagon, i have another mek-gun to build and a shokk attack gun to start, i'm also practicing batch painting and have 12 ork nobz on the go, skin almost complete....

Not gonna lie, they actually look great in orange too.

I'm too afraid to paint miniatures because I'm afraid I'll screw something up or I'll miss glue something or a part will break off and make the whole kit unable to be finished.

it doesn't help that everything is fucking expensive, like if I wanted a few Lizard men dino units that's a few hundred bucks right there. Like an Engine of The Gods and a few Carnosaurs. That and all the diorama buildings and everything is even more expensive, so I couldn't take a bartop and turn it into a huge ass display unless I was going to drop a few grand.

I also don't know if customizing things a certain way will make the model illegal for play

Couple things:

1. You can paint over fuck-ups in assembly pretty easily.
2. It doesn't matter how good/bad an individual unit is, only that the army as a cohesive whole looks good.
3. Start with something easy and work your way up to the crazy stuff. You can buy a $5 junk marine and practice on that before you drop $60 on St. Celestine or $200 on a titan.

Should I paint the parts before assembly or after?

The lizardy Start Collecting box is a really good deal, and you get enough in the box for skirmishing in Open Play, which is actually a pretty fun option since the 2019 Handbook provided options to make it a little less "open" and kinda balanced. You get a Carnosaur/Troglodon in the box, plus Saurus Knights.

If you're leery of painting, I highly suggest Contrast paint, it's actually pretty good. Just prime in white, then slather on your favorite blue/green/whatever, and have a few browns and metallics for the weapons.

And Saurus Warriors and Skinks are pretty cheap on eBay!
