I hope the Q'orl finally get some relevance in the new fluff. It would be interesting to see them fight the Tyranids.

Also, is it worth it to start collecting minis and codexes so I can start playing 8th Edition 40K and/or Age of Sigmar? I'd like to start playing them someday, but I'd also like to know if it's even worth it to sink money into the games in the first place.

I haven't played 40k in a very long time. The group I played with were an oldhammer group, so we played the old 1987 edition rules of 40k with current models because that's all that's available. I always played ork and didn't have that many figures for my squads. The original rogue trader rules are better for single squad fights, not like nowadays with these huge armies. A lot closer to necromunda, where individual models mattered and you have a gamemaster. It's what I played when I was a kid, so it's what i'm nostalgic for. Anyways, I've got a ton of scenery for my orks that a friend of mine made. Here's some of it:

Da boyz approve of dis post.

That terrain is old school as hell you’re just missing the old polystyrene ball cactus and it would be the perfect looking 3rd edition board.

Yo guys, are the rule books necessary(or worth it) for getting into the actual game side of things. Always been one to stick to the story and lore, but I want to dip my toes.

Well they kind of are for you to like, know the rules. But if $40 for a full-colour hardbound rulebook is too steep, there are plenty of PDFs floating around of each battletome/codex if you sail the high seas long enough *wink**wink**nudge**nudge*

I think they're generally worth the amount if you like the army, but obviously if you like all of one or more factions it starts to add up, and that dosh could be better spent on models and the like. It's not like we didn't hijack the school photocopier for cheaper alternatives in days of antiquity, anyway.

Got far enough into the first Caphias Cain novel to realize it's fucking Blackadder in the 41st millennium (and subsequently learn of the Flashman novel series they're both inspired by).

This is god damned amazing.

Alright fellas, ive been doing some research on what I should build for my first army, and I'm stuck between custodes and tyranids. The custodes low numbers are appetizing from a monetary perspective(though I'm sure this adds difficulty as well) and I can paint golds pretty well. The more slow paced and assumingly objective based playstyle interests me. The tyranids, however, have just always been favorites of mine, and I also do like speedy bois and board control fits a lot of my style in other game.

Any strong opinions for or against one of the 2?

I think a lot of it boils down to your preferred playstyle, tbh. Do you want to do a smaller, more elite army, or go with a horde that can sweep across the table?

Custodians are slowish, but they're also hilariously hard to kill and hit like a freight train, especially if you're willing to cough up for some of the Forge World units like the Orion gunship or the Aquilon termies. Plus you get Dawneagle jetbikes, which are fast, killy as hell, and can do just about anything you want them to. Their infantry units also have access to deep-striking and a variety of transports, so they're not as slow as you might think. That said, the low model count really hurts if you come up against an army that can just drown you in bodies or gunfire, and you probably want to take an allied detachment with them (Imperial Guard, Sisters of Silence, Marines) as a CP battery and force multiplier, so they might not be quite as monetarily cheap as you'd hope when all is said and done. So, if you want to play a small but elite army that punches way above its model count and looks pretty as hell, then Custodes are your guys. I'd say they're probably not a bad choice for a first army.

Now, as to the other guys: I've always wanted to do a Tyranid army myself because I love the lore of "giant eaty space bugs that constantly adapt to whatever's thrown at them", and really, they're a pretty versatile army, depending on how you build them and what stratagems and hive fleet adaptations you choose. Melee-heavy army with units that can get halfway across the table in a single turn and shred through damn near any infantry in the game? Shooty army with tons of dakka and options to poison the enemy and deal out shitloads of mortal wounds? Flying circus with Tyrants and Crones and Gargoyles? Nidzilla army full of Carnifexes and Trygons and maybe a Dimachaeron and whatever other big models tickle your fancy? Psychic spam with Zoanthropes and Neurothropes? Whatever the hell you want to do with 'nids, you can do with 'nids, and they have a lot of different models that look pretty cool. Of course, the downsides are that they usually have a massive model count, so are more expensive to collect, individual units tend to be pretty fragile, and you don't have a ton of all-rounder units, so they can suffer from overspecialization on the tabletop. They can also be fiddly to paint, from what I'm told, so if that's a consideration for you, Custodians might be a better choice.

In the end, though, it really just boils down to what you want to do. These are gonna be your dudes, after all.

is 1/48 the right size?

It's close enough.

My Ork-y sense says there's something terribly wrong about pictures 4 and 5: A proper Ork would never leave some weedy tree standing to build fortifications around.

On another note, I was also a Gorkamorka enthusiast. It's a shame that game got done dirty and probably won't ever get a new edition.

Speedfreeks is Gorkamorka with a new name.

Nah, Gorkamorka was more of an RPG than just the racing aspect. You had a mob of Orks who could get stronger or sustain injuries/die and there were rules for questionable Dok surgery among other things.

If it were reimagined now, it'd probably be more like Kill Team or Necromunda, only with Orks. Thinking on it, it'd be fun for them to do something like that again: to just more thoroughly explore the culture and background of their alien races without a Space Marine in sight.

Tyranids for their versatility and awesome models, though I may be biased considering they're my favourite 40K army besides Orks. If you plan on painting something kaleidoscopic on them for colour, you might get fatigued doing that for each and every model, so I would suggest a simple paint scheme if you go ahead with them. Haven't painted the bigger creatures, but the Gaunts and Warriors are easy enough. I imagine they might be easier to paint by sub-assembly though.

So fellas, hopefully last question and then I can shut up and get to reading the rule books. But since ive decided to go with custodes ive been reading a lot on them. Ive seen a lot that they are massively helped by having allied detachments with them, especially psykers. While the obvious choice for this is probably the sisters of silence, I also kinda want to make some grey knights stuff, so I went to get a codex. Turns out there is a basic space marine codex and then there are legion specific. Can I cut corners on buying one codex over the other? I already have like $100 worth of rulebooks on order and while I dont really mind, this in particular has me feeling a little fucked with.

Short answer, no. Long answer: Blood Angels, Space Wolves, and Grey Knights all get their own codexes because they have unique units and different playstyles. Grey Knights in particular are a unique beast because they're an army full of psykers, their basic units are all Terminators with storm bolters and force weapons, and they don't have access to some of the stuff other Space Marines do, thanks to being such a specialized chapter, so you kind of need the codex. That said, if you really don't want to buy it, there are probably pdfs floating around the internet.

who are some of the biggest retards in the 40k community? considering how popular it is getting these days it seems to me that its only a matter of time until the fandom gets involved in some drama or spawns a cow

Only one I can think of is Alex Harrison, who got banned from the London Grand Tournament for egregious cheating, has been caught and/or credibly accused of cheating in other tournaments, and is apparently a WAAC assclown.

Anyone here ever play space hulk? I still have my 90s box. That game was a shitload of fun.

Websites would be Bell of Lost Souls and Spikey Bitz. Specific people would be ArchWarhammer since he is one of Sargons capos and mention his name anywhere it devolves into a shit flinging contest.
