I'm more thinking that if they ever tried to sell 40k / AOS figurines in China, they'd spend a year and millions trying only to find the entire internet flooded with "official knockoffs" within a month. And that's not even taking into consideration the other bugman shit -- China outright stealing GW's IP, forcing them to make local changes (that will be reproduced in the main version cause it's cheaper that way), making their own version of the game and then banning GW's, etc etc.

Everyone learns working with China isn't worth it eventually. Should be fun watching GW learn the lesson yet again.

GW already sells miniatures in China. They have a store in Shanghai so there is demand for it. I think they are attempting to expand awareness of their brand. I don’t know much about current Chinese pop culture, but I have no doubt that there are people who enjoy entertainment with over the top action.

GW would want signal to those people that they offer a game where armored warriors smash in the heads of multi-limbed monsters with giant electrified hammers.

The only problem that I can see is them dealing with China’s censorship on anything spiritual or faith-based in entertainment. But since all of Warhammer’s faiths are not tied to anything Chinese, they may get a pass.
 
Man, the discussion earlier about not having more than one space marine army has me having a bit of a big thunk about having chosen to do up my Space Marines as Blood Ravens. I love the lore and the memes, but at the same time, I could instead do some yourdudes, with something like, I dunno, an Irish themed custom SM chapter or something similar. Kinda like how the the Carcharodons are vaugely Samoan themed. It might be fun to have created a chapter out of whole cloth.

Having said that, I am now realizing I have no fucking clue about Irish lore and celtic mythology to do something like that. (And, doing a bit of a search, apparently the Storm Wardens are basically "Celtic Blood Ravens only not" so...)

I think you guys are too optimistic about GW getting screwed over in China. They're pretty much guaranteed to work with a Chinese licensee who will take care of all the legal matters, including shutting down fakes. It's hard for foreign companies to enforce IP law in China but it's much easier for Chinese licensees. Sure censorship might get fucky with the lore, but a) lore is subservient to money for GW, 2) I don't think the scene will ever be big enough to attract scrutiny, and III) I don't think it's relevant enough for China to care. They mostly care about visuals for games children might play and politics anywhere but GW left behind Thatcher-bashing decades ago. The dude who translated the Horus Heresy trilogy for China said they didn't make any demands and he hadn't noticed any censorship (though they may have done it themselves without talking to him as they are wont to do).

It's not a blanket ban and it's a bit ephemeral. It's mostly a video game thing and it's mostly preemptive; Blizzard and Steam censored their stuff ahead of time to avoid potential problem. It matters more for big video games because those are attractive to kids and China does everything it can to try to limit kids being on Western-influenced platforms. The guy who translated Horus Heresy said he wasn't asked to censor anything, even the religion and gore. "Skulls for the skull throne" is apparently translated literally. It is possible that the publisher censored stuff anyway but it's unlikely since it's not political or popular. As for the miniatures I don't think they'll care; it's totally legal to make incredibly offensive stuff in China so long as it's not religious, political, or aimed at kids. Or the local officials don't like you but that's why companies turn things over to licensees to manage.

That said, since the rule of law means nothing in China and the censorship isn't done with any body of law or legislation behind it (it's literally just whether the people who read it are okay with it or not) then eventually they might get censored; my guess is something Tau vs. Imperium could be a problem. The Tau being Asian space commies is pretty obvious and the Imperium is apparently treated similarly to the Ming Empire in translations. The CCP doesn't mind ridiculing Ming China, but if the Tau are obviously incompetent in fighting the Imperium or the Imperium is portrayed as sympathetic in that work it might not be approved. But that's just a small amount of the lore next to everything else.

All I know of Ireland is what little I learned from watching the Trainspotting movies... So, next to nothing. Captain Renton has a good ring to it, however.

Never really considered the Tau as commies, more of a federation. Never thought about actual communism though, considering each world is governed independently you'd think the setting would be rife with it.

I do like a yourdudes army, but I think that includes established forces as well. You can make an ultramarines army but I feel like it is best to have your own spin on it. Create your own Ultramarines 2nd company (because they currently have at least 2 current captains, so you don’t have to worry about adhering to “canon”) or just assemble/paint your models with some character.

That’s it; character is what’s important. You could build the entire Ultramarines chapter, but if all of the models just look the same, then it wouldn’t be your Ultramarines chapter.

On the Tau thing, they are right that it is not communist (a casteless society is the state that the Tau were in before the Etherals arrived).

What’s bewildering is that sigmarxism believes that the most communistic faction is the Beastclaw Raiders. A group of gluttonous fatties that leave a trail of destruction behind them and vote for a leader based on how many gibs that they can hand out to their voters. Well, I guess they aren’t wrong there!
