Because it's a fag format that no one in the industry gives a fuck about. Also google sponsors it. I bet the Jews at Google saw the amount of happy merchant memes being pumped out by /pol/mutts and thought "gee oy gevalt it would be a shame if we made an image format that hinders meme creation so badly the goyim will stop doing this anti-Semitic image macros " and there you go, they made a nigger format that's harder to wrangle than a pack of feral niggers looting an NYC 7-11, a 2-minute-meme takes 15 minutes to make if the source was webp/webm.

Honestly jokes aside it's just a badly promoted format, no one takes it seriously. There's other formats too like JPEG2000 which is superior to ordinary JPEG but guess what, nobody uses it. JPEG2000 is superior in every aspect, better signal-to-noise ratio, high dynamic range support, better compression, offers a choice between lossy and lossless, better scaling, better fucking everything. So what? Who cares? I don't and I have a colour calibrator. Why should you?
If it's not broke, there's no need for a fancy new fix. JPEG. Works. I don't need all that fancy shit when the average person views stuff from their dumb smartphone or a 1080p monitor. Who cares about any of that, the difference is anecdotal at best. Photographers and videographers with their image quality wankery won't care either because those retards would use 100% lossless raw formats, which also sees no wide support for the same reason. At the end of the day, everyone exports to JPEG for normal stuff and png if they want transparency, gif if they want it to move. Hell, wepb can move too but often or not even programs that support webp only recognises the first frame. Webp does png, so what? Most software just convert the transparency levels to black. Some offers you choices to mask the black out, now what? Oh the guy was wearing a darker colour shirt. Literally what the fuck?

With the advent of cheap storage, webp and webm at least to a layman like me is trying to fix an issue that does not exist. When it was released, nobody really knew this stuff enough to even care (2010 I think).
Now, if these formats were made earlier and heavily promoted, we might see wider adaptation.

Webp and Webm is trying to do everything but unlike a Swiss army knife, it sucks at all of it. At least Swiss army knives work, individual tools for individual needs in some cassette, it's good for nothing but works well enough. Now imagine a multitool that works as a screwdriver for philips and slotted, has a bottle opener, a knife, a sawblade, a torch, a wrench for you to open your soylent bottles because you're Google promoting this shit and so on, all in one tool. What would it do? Nothing. Shove if up your butts Google.

I'm fine with images and videos being in this format. As long as when I right-click-save or drag it to a window, it's shown in the original format. I guess webp and webm will significantly speed up browsing because it's less taxing on hardware.
