Having problems with bored eating. I'm in the process of quitting nicotine. (On a disturbing note, did you know those nicotine packets can have up to 8mg in a single dose? That's four fucking cigarettes in one go!) Anyway, I've been drinking a lot of water, and swimming daily, but when I'm home and done cleaning, it's really hard to not want something to satiate the oral fixation. I know better than to keep junk foods around, except some jawbreakers, because they last a long time, but does anyone have any other tips? Thanks, in advance.

Zero cal jello, zero cal chewing gum, remember to brush your teeth!

@lurker7274519 Well if your goal is weight loss I'd say you're already well underway with what you describe. But if your goal is "funny experiment" that's outside my wheelhouse to be honest. At least you've done actual fasting before and are doing some now. I hope you have plenty of weight to lose though because six weeks without eating is a lot. All I can really suggest is that you decide in advance some criteria that if met, you will abort the fast. Have them there and written down before you begin and agree to stick to them, because a long term fast might mess with your attitudes and perceptions a bit. Don't want you going all pro-ana on us.
I think I will probably pass, I am not arrogant enough to believe I am built different, and that biological limits will not affect me, I will simply add more gym time, and jogging to compensate to my current diet.

Will post results when the day comes

Quitting smoking is tough. One thing I would suggest is to go cold turkey. The reason being the chemicals from a cigarette stay in your body for 16 days. If you can get past those 16 days without a smoke it is now all in your head. Also change habits before you quit cold turkey. If you have a smoke after you eat - don't. Find something else to do with your hands and like all habits if you don't maintain them they won't be habits. DO NOT USE FUME! If you really need to keep your hands busy, get a pen. Definitely change up habits you do while smoking.

It's not fun or easy, but once you get over those 16 if you smoke again you want to not need to. BUT if you get over that hump too you probably won't want to.

I also took a drink of water every time I was craving a smoke. It really does help with snacking. And there are plenty of water flavourings out there now.

And honestly the classic "Every time you would go nicotine" put it in a jar/savings etc. At the end of the year you will be surprised how much money you saved. Worst case scenario vacation in Canada and try to buy some smokes. (Last I checked out of curiosity, around 5 years ago.) a 25 pack in Canada was $25 CAD and honestly that was the reason I quit cold turkey when it was about $15 when coming back from 3-4 Euros.)

Thanks @Null for the fat shaming on MATI
Stopped drinking and hit the gym. I'm already down 10lbs, determined to enter the sub 200 club.
Got myself a standing desk and walking pad too.

Unironically watching Ralphs daily public humiliation keeps any and all alcohol cravings away. Not to mention he looks like he's gaining it all back.

Whenever I get calorie estimates like this, am I right in assuming this also counts the calories I'd have expended by staying home anyway and not the net expenditure I got going walking? How do I correct it? Is 25% less a reasonable estimate?

What is the name of this app ?

This happened to me. Ngl, I went from borderline underweight to overweight in record time. In the end I just chose the weight gain because I had been horrifically addicted (used to chain) for over half my life and was in a "now or never" situation. I figured that I'd deal with one thing at a time and lose the weight later.

It took months to get over the worst of it personally, and still have the odd craving, but now looking at almost 2 years wiithout any kind of nicotine and don't eat to replace it any more either. Initially I was eating fists of sour sweets at a rate where sugar free would have had disastrous consequences!

If you like spicy stuff perhaps a drop of hot sauce to the tongue might help with the sensation-seeking for fewer calories? Perhaps dip veg sticks in wassabi or something. Bonus endorphin rush to boot. Wish I'd done something along those lines myself. Jawbreakers sound good, just keep a record of calories and adjust accordingly I guess.

It's taken way longer than previous weight loss missions to lose the weight this time around which has been frustrating, but a consequence of life circumstances reducing the amount of time that I can be active.

Saying that, I'm cycling in and out of upper healthy BMI and have established some better routines and habits over this last month so I'm pretty confident that a final push will get me back to my preferred weight.

Good luck for both, and bear in mind that prioritising your challenges is an option. I wish I hadn't gained as much when I quit but it was absolutely worth it and I'm losing the weight now that I'm way past using food to compensate. If you were less addicted than me (I believe that it affects people differently) then it might result in less gain anyway.

Google Fit
Cannot speak to that specific app with authority, but normally when an app tells you "you have burned X calories in activity Y" it is tracking those specific calories, not base rate + that. I would imagine the app has a total daily expenditure value as well, and often will show the base rate and activity as separate values in some kind of breakdown.

According to a calculator, I shoul eat less than 1100 kcal a day to lose 1kg per week.
This is hell I'm so fucking hungry

Pro-tip: if you burn more calories, then you can eat more and maintain the same deficit. I can lose a kg/WK at 3500 calories.

If you're deadset on staying below a hundred steps a day, and really want to lose at that rate, then you're going to want to be eating basically nothing other than protein. But if I was going to do that, I'd still rather go for a few walks, and lose 1.5 or 2kg/WK

If you're a quadriplegic or like a 110 cm 35 kg woman or some shit, then maybe eating 1100 calories is your most viable way of losing weight at that rate, but otherwise, you almost certainly have far, far better options.

I believe @Wujime has referenced not living in the best neighbourhood for walking, unless I'm confusing posters. For a bloke I'd recommend kettle bells but for something free and easy to start, I'd suggest doing some form of dynamic yoga or callisthenics. It's surprising how much of a sweat you can work up in an area the size of a mat just going through all the different postures or exercises in sequence. I know it wont sound much to some but for a person out of shape and overweight, twenty minutes of that will shake things up.

At the gym today I got weighed and found out I had lost seven pounds this month.
Hi!
I come here very rarely. I just stumbled upon this section. But I want to congratulate you on losing a couple of pounds.

When I started losing weight, I had absolutely no support from family, friends, or anything like that. So I understand you.
I'm from Europe. Here, everything is measured in kilograms. I lost 10-12 kg (approximately 22-26.5 pounds) in two weeks at the beginning of summer. Since then, I've lost another 3 kg without exercising.

I'll be going to the gym again soon, and I want to get to 55-60 kg (121.3-132.3 pounds), have a toned body, and improve my endurance in the gym, etc. I understand what a difficult time this will be, on top of my life's problems.
During such periods, I simply close myself off and do what I want and how I want. I focus more on relaxation, listening to music or podcasts. In the evenings, I have time to chat with friends, and the conversations focus exclusively on "what's new" or discussing common interests.

Can't believe I had to give my hard-earned money to some trannies just because of my lack of discipline. I'm extremely mad at myself for it. This week I'll try the same challenge, but this time I'll have to donate to a despicable, horrifying and disgusting grooming org dedicated exclusively to the mass brainwashing of "trans" kids and teens. I can't believe this even exists here where I live. What the fuck is wrong with people??? I actively pray for humanity's extinction at this point. The founder of it trooned out her own child at 4 years old!!!! A 4 year old can't even speak properly yet!!!! Jesus fucking Christ.

But anyway if I can go to the gym 5x next week I'll donate 20 dollars to an anti-trans charity. But I'll just go ahead and donate 20 now to make up for my contribution to humanity's worsening.

Weighted in at 143 lbs today and feel very disappointed in myself. It's tough living with a family who eats like crap because you're always tempted or even pressured to partake in their eating habits. What sucks is that in my line of work people always are making an excuse to eat. Every celebration and meeting demands snacks. No wonder these professionals are all so fat. I think that after I move out things will get better as I'll buy the food myself and voluntarily choose healthier options :optimistic: but I definitely need to work on my discipline. Any tips for sticking to a routine would be greatly appreciated :) there's no one stopping me from losing weight besides myself.

5+kg in one week? Was amputation involved? That's over 42,000KCal of body fat or 6,000KCal per day. Base maintenance weight for adult men is often in the low 2,000KCal. I.e. if you consumed no calories at all, the maintenance weight is how many calories you'd be in deficit each day. Though even maintenance calories drop when fasting.

Firstly, I'm not a man. Secondly, kilocalories are calculated for each person based on their weight, etc. But in the end, you don't eat as much as they calculated for you per day, and you still have about 1000-1500 kilocalories left over.

I went to the gym every day and even got there by bike. Sometimes in the evening there were also walks. I was in a severe calorie deficit. I ate two large meals; when I wanted to eat more, I only had fruit (but that was rare). I gave up coffee and sugar. Mental health is very important when losing weight, sleep is very important, without stress, etc. I only experienced nausea due to strength training (the stress) and rapid weight loss.

You realise that not being a man makes it even harder to lose that much weight because you'd have an even lower maintenance weight. I didn't understand the rest of that paragraph. To lose that much fat you would have to be in deficit of 6,000KCal per day of those two weeks.

I didn't count any calories when I was losing weight this time. I described in the second paragraph what I did while losing weight. I know it's very bad for the body. But I had no other option.

Two large meals a day are really enough for me. And my body is doing well.
