I liked the main character Tony in Tanya Huff's Smoke and Shadows trilogy. For the most part all his sexuality matters is that he has an embarrassing crush on another character, and several people give him shit over it. Plus there's one bit in the final book where he's trying to contact a god, who is bound to a woman, and the only way she ever speaks to the god is through sex. Except he's so gay he can't get it up for her. And then she's irked because she's used to being able to get anyone, male or female, to drop their pants for her.
It's funny because he's likeable. She wrote lesbian characters for the third book of the Keepers series and I found them irritating as fuck and obnoxious.
Oberyn Martel from Martin's books was pretty cool, ditto his portrayl in the early seasons of Thrones. I think what made him good was the fact that he was a really cool, charismatic character with solid motivations. The fact he occasionally took a guy to bed with, or instead of a girl, was utterly incidental.
Same thing in mr robot and house of cards. It's a typically woke kinda meme.
This if my favorite gay character.
It's a comedy, so it's far from the best written. But I loved that everybody fucking hated this show. Right wing hated it for having a gay marriage, left wing hated it for not portraying gay people as perfect little angels.
This guy is rich as fuck and convinced the other guy to leave his wife and marry him, but it becomes clear that the other guy isn't gay at all but just an easygoing guy that eventually relented. It's all very dark and abusive and funny as fuck.
There's a comic out there called Chaos Life made by a lesbian couple (one of whom has a real mental illness), and honestly it's pretty funny for being all self-insert. They also make a graphic novel, FindChaos, but I never delved into it. You can find the comic on Tumblr, and they are not all centered around their lesbianism. Mostly it's about their pets and daily life, but they do touch (lightly, not strong-armed like Labelle) on mental illness and gay stuff, just because that's who they are.
I like Apollo and Midnighter from The Authority as characters. They don't suffer from the too perfect problem or the unnecessary issue. They are based on Batman and Superman, very Male characters, with both male traits and flaws, and also have a strong well written relationship.
There is a scene where midnighter tortures a guy to death with a jackhammer for calling apollo a fag, but its framed as a 'disrespecting my husband' thing rather than a 'homophobia' thing which is a lot more realistic for a masculine and more mature approach to a gay character. I would be disrespecting the author if I said I was impressed with this bit but it is so rare to find this kind of framing in modern media involving the LGBTs.
Its a very violent comic and that response is this comic universes equivalent of punching someone in the face so it also doesnt feel like a gay power/revenge fantasy.
Do Aces count in this? Because Parvati from the Outer Worlds was at least likeable. Probably the only thing memorable about that ho-hum game was her: a cute, spergy Pajeeta, which does make her a "special snowflake", but not in a bad way IMO.
Gotta do a little correcting here. The entire crux of the Iliad is Achilles having his woman taken away and doing a hissy fit about it, and Patrocles also has a captive woman bed warmer. If you read the actual work, (written down 700BC) they're written as cousins. They're close, but not explicitly bumming it. HOWEVER when bumming it became really popular in Greece in the fifth and sixth centuries BC, the relationship was recontexualized as super duper gay. Same with Orestes and Pylades. Basically Athens invented slashfic.
My first introduction to a well written LGBT character was Juhani from the first KOTOR.
She strikes that perfect balance of her sexuality integrated into her character, and her being much more than just her label, with non lesbo history and goals. If anyone tries to pretend firsties on a later OMG SEW QUEER Star Wars character I slap that shit right down. Her being a lesbian is kinda subtle, but was important enough to the writers that when the first release allowed both men and women to 'romance' her they later fixed the game to exclude dudes.

I always thought that Corey and Shawn from "Boy meets world" were a good example of men fully in the closet, desperate to be considered straight.
That's why Corey even married Topanga and adopted some kind of eurasian chick to be his daughter, he was terrified of the world knowing he was tapping Shawn's tight, taut, muscular Italian buttocks.

I ganna go with Ellie from the last of us. Though most of the strengths of the game are from the relationship/interactions between Ellie and Joel, Ellie has shown to be a strong character on her own. She can be stubborn, crude, and reckless , but can also be empathetic, caring, and independent.
Here’s to hoping that they don’t fuck it up in part 2.
Ik it's not literature related but Kevin from paranormnan is probably the best example of how to have LGBT characters in animation.
It's not brought up regaurding him as a character until litteraly the last minute when a girl hitting on him says sorry but I'm gay with a boyfriend, and that's it like for the rest of the movie he's a well rounded supporting character.
The sifu of Yuen Biao's character in the 80s kung fu movie The Prodigal Son is heavily implied to be gay. It's not really a big focus though and only one line alludes to it. He gets one of the best choreographed fight scenes in Hong Kong action cinema.
American Gods had a gay love story between two arab characters, which I think was both well written and slaughtered a pretty big sacred cow a lot of people are afraid to touch.
Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a cool character, forcing gayness into the plot wasn't as standard back then so it felt at least different, at least to me as a teenager.
Also, Tomoyo from Sakura Card Captors although i don't remember is shes even canonically lesbian, i think it was more like a platonic thing.
Alucard (CV animated): never brought up the fact he’s bi until the sex scene with his two students. He’s a dick, charming, good with a sword, good at cooking and if season 3 is anything to go by, should not be left alone because he made dolls in the images of his friends because they split after Dracula died.
Edelgard/Mercedes/Jeritza: Fire Emblem has kinda had a problem before of making characters for jokes (hell, the first game w gay marriage only gave you the options of tumblr bait who is super fucking creepy, or a goth girl who is the child of one of the youngest characters in the army and is also a borderline yandere/fujo), so getting 5+ bis in the most recent game is really nice. I picked these three for how well they’re written.
Edelgard is basically trying to reinvent the continent itself before she dies because of an experiment on her that is the main reason for her rage. She’s also a dork who loves cake, paints a picture of the main character during the timeskip because she missed them and is the only one who’s keeping Jeritza sane by giving him things to kill.
Speaking of which, Jeritza is basically a Dr Jekyll mr Hyde situation except it’s more blood thirsty, and it wasn’t really his choice to take it on. He’s actually Mercedes’ half brother (same mom, different dads as hers died before their mom met his dad), and once his father found out after they left (leaving him alone bc they knew they’d be killed if they took him with) that the mom was infertile due to age, was going to take his own stepdaughter as a child bride to produce more crest babies. In his rage, Jeritza killed his own father to protect his sister, and in this created his blood thirsty Death Knight persona. Kid was only nine at the time and didn’t know what the hell happened. Thankfully he was able to have a new identity created for him by Edelgard so he wouldn’t be put to death (and she’s genuinely trying to help him) that can’t really be restrained, only fed. Hell he can’t even control it near his own sister just because a dumbass in armor came rushing after him. Never mentioned he’s bi until you learn you can romance him with the main character.
And then there’s Mercedes. She’s basically everyone’s big sister (and is the oldest out of the students pretimeskip at launch, the only other person to pass her is a former graduate with the dlc) , enjoys baking sweets, is a clumsy girl sometimes and even has the hair of death pretimeskip (post she cuts it short with a beret) and even after the game runs an orphanage. Once again, you don’t know until you check her supports, but her friendships with Constance and Annette are very close (even if Annette is 16 pre time skip and she’s 22)
Leon (FE Echoes): This is actually a case of remakes giving more characterization. He’s snarky as all hell, asks the main female lead about makeup tips, and chooses not to force his sexuality on the man he loves because he’s still grieving over the loss of his entire family (wife and daughter included) and he understands what it is to grieve because Leon lost his former crush during their first battle (which is how he got into the whole army thing and is stated to be a man) and this other man basically gave him a shoulder to cry on.
Lukas/Ike: I’m lumping these two together because of their LACK of sexuality. In the Echoes DLC, Lukas at one point did have a fiancée but doesn’t miss her at all when he was forcefully enlisted into the Deliverance because his dick of a half brother wants the inheritance to himself. He even compares his lack of emotion to a lack of fire and considers himself broken.
Fire my...? Honestly, Python? I'm not sure if I love her or not. Since being parted from her, I feel no particular longing to see her again. I sometimes wonder if a vital part of me is broken. I look at Clive and Mathilda and see... Well, you used the word "fire". But whatever it is that they have, I seem to lack it.
Yes, that. It's true—I AM cold. Few passions ever manage to flare up in me. Granted, I'm not nearly as dispassionate as Python... But just once, I should like to be red with rage, green with envy... Something! I wonder if it is normal to feel so... detached.
But this makes him at the same time an effective strategist, not even hesitating to use civilians to escape a near unwinnable situation. As for Ike, he’s totally ineffected by this random shopkeeper that keeps trying to force him on dates (except for being uncomfortable which fucking same), and his two supports he gets an ending with are with his two closest friends
Sorry for the sperging, this is a series dear to my heart

I think you forgot to mention the whole bullshit about Ike being gay because the fandom is full of people who want to shove him into Soren/Ranulf.
There's also Heather from Radiant Dawn, but that game has jack all for character writing 80% of the time. The problem with this series lies less with representation and more with fujoshi projecting what they want to see. I.E. Lyn x Florina.
Anyways, on topic,
Pied Piper from DC comics in the Wally West era and afterwards. They did a halfway decent job at making a gay character without having it revolve around the sexuality itself given that the character's been around for a long time.
Hulkling/Wiccan. It's not the best, but it's competently done. Shame they don't do more.
Northstar: The guy famous for being a gay X-Man and then never gets seen in anything these days. Kind of a shame, honestly.
Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy: It's not a bad idea, but it's too early to make a judgement as it's a fairly recent confirmation.
Apollo/Midnighter: Probably the best because it was never about their homosexuality per se, but actually just kinda fit into the world of the Wildstorm universe.
Wolverine/Hercules: We only saw this as an AU thing in an X-Man story arc, but it was pretty novel.
