Wendigoon Thread

issue with the MC isn't just that he is retarded, but he is pretentious in his writing too. If the MC was a lovable idiot like Ted the Caver who is the type of dipshit to go to twitter for help and had a blunt and realistic writing style, this story could have had a lot of fun.
This shit right here, is what drives me up the wall. When written as a retrospective (a la Penpal) I can forgive it to an extent, but even those stories are on a thin line sometimes. Yet the author wants us to believe the guy is in imminent danger, knows he is in imminent danger and trouble could pop up at any minute, yet he takes the time to sit down and write out flowery prose.
Real humans don't talk like that, even when retelling personal stories. That's how writers talk when they're knowingly crafting a fictional tale and are following show don't tell rules, which isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't fit here. Think of any time you've shared a personal story online and you'll notice what I mean immediately.
And if your character really is just a pretentious cuck who genuinely writes about their daily routine like they're the main character of a novel, then they're simply unlikeable and I don't care about anything that might happen to them.

I don't like saying it because it sounds gay but I don't know how else to put it. Feels like Wendigoon has sold out. When the real bullshit sponsorships started rolling in I got a little nervous. It was sealed when Creep Cast and Red Thread were announced. Creep Cast is fun though it has some issues. It at least makes sense having Wendigoon and Meat doing something. Red Thread though. Charlie and whatever the Aussie faggot's name is are just awful. The Aussie is such a smug shit and his little stories he writes suck ass. Charlie adds nothing. They're just rehashing shit that has been done to death. Some even covered already by Wendigoon. Often key details are left out and it's not even in exchange for interesting or funny commentary. The Aussie clearly has contempt for Wendigoon.

Even his solo new videos just feel so damn soulless. Like he's just going through the motions. Dude should have just stuck with his own stuff. Kept doing the Weird Bible show on the side. Not getting fucked up with Charlie, Meat, Turkey Tom, Muta and the other tards of Youtube. It has demonstrably messed with his content. Still like him and I want him to do well. I just think he's developing that same sort of stank these streamers get after the sponsorships and clout come in.

What's worse is I'd be willing to bet money based on interactions I've seen that most of these people are just smiling in his face and waiting for an opportunity to arise where they can "cancel" him. They are all very hung up on the gun owning and Christian aspects of him and are blatantly only playing nice because he's popular. I hope he understands the den of vipers he's gotten himself in with. Maybe he does. And maybe that's why he'll keep cranking out mid dipshit TikTok tier videos, avoiding sticking out too much. Blending in just right.

Got curious so I finally bit the bullet and started watched that Creep Cast video. That's not an ARG. No way in hell is that an ARG. It's some guy's shitty r/nosleep story he had to post on Twitter because they had actual standards for once.

That's it. That's literally what it is. It's got the same shitty writing style and everything. Even all the same tropes and explanations for why the main character can't just do the rational thing up front. Even why there's a gap in

Can't understand why they're taking it so seriously. This is literally bottom of the barrel.

Edit: Finished it. I don't really know what they saw in the story, it's literally just a generic paranormal / haunted house story meshed with the basic premise of The Shadow Over Innsmouth. There's just nothing worthwhile in there you can't get better literally anywhere else. Really, its only unique quality is the media the guy made for it, and that's at most generic Hollywood horror movie tier stuff.

Actually, maybe Wendigoon's right, maybe it really was a high school writing assignment or something. I think that would explain why it's written like a fucking novel, he had no time to actually try to tell the story in a way that fits the medium; why all the elements seem so haphazardly pieced together and blatantly ripping off better fiction the guy was probably a fan of, and maybe why all the photos were taken either in the house or out in the woods -- he's too young to really go out.

Quite liked it though. Maybe I'll go and watch the rest of them. Just wish they'd keep away from all the nosleep trash and cover an actually good story next time.

I gave up on Wendigoon when the opening 10 minutes of the first episode of his Cryptid Iceberg series was just self-promotion and sponsors.

Edit: Also was the iceberg at the start always blurred? I know he tossed it a few episodes in, but it feels weird to blur it, and not link it anywhere.

For the people who have issues with the sponsors just grab sponsorblock, you'll thank yourself in no time. Unlike adblock your boys still get paid and you'll save hours of time a month if you frequent sponsored channels. It's win-win-win. You save time, the channels gets paid, the sponsor threw money away

I’ve never cared for them in the first place. I still preferred his historical retelling than a lot of the horror content.
I am not a fan either, but I listened to it in the background while playing Pacific Drive.

Also, Is it just me or has Wendi became a huge cunt? Seeing the blurred iceberg in episode one got me curious, so I rewatched the part in episode 2 where he explained why he dropped the original iceberg. He explained that it was out of his depth (even though he was in talks with the creator, and could just ask the guy for help) before saying he is going to make his own that has more cryptids and get rid of the non-cryptids on the official one, which seems like a major diss to the cryptologist guy. Not to mention Wendi then gets frustrated with his iceberg in later episodes, and the groupings of cryptids make no sense once so ever.

It seems to be more filtering actual cryptids in favour of populating the list with literal fairytales since it works on the notion that "creepy cryptids are the real ones". The whole iceberg has become several red flags of a decline in quality in a content creator. Like a legit speedrun into being uncomfortable.

Now I'm not an Internet horror expert, but I thought ARGs were supposed to have a level of interactivity to a greater extent than your average creepypasta. Some cunt posting on Twitter about spooky happenings, and occasionally replying to comments on his threads with "OMG you're so right, this is totally scary. Gosh I hope some creepy weepy monster doesn't diddle me in the night. By the way, I found this glowing deer skull with runic symbols carved into it in my basement, I wonder what that's about?" While providing no other means for the readers to direct the narrative of the story, screws up the one thing this ARG is trying to be, which is an ARG.

Now I could forgive all of that if the story was good... which it isn't. In fact its very fucking bad. I'm glad Wendi and Meat are covering other stuff besides the typical creepypasta, but ARGs are a tough one to examine in retrospect, since they lose a lot of their appeal after the fact. That being the ability to actually engage with them. Fingers crossed they cover some good content again soon.

Agree. I'm tired of language being fucked with like this. ARG's are PARTICIPATORY things, not just a twitter thread of a story.

I do have a genuine fear that it’s all middle road takes about historical events and even worse “args” and creepy pastas for the future. I wonder if he’s trying to appease the algorithm and a small subsection of his fanbase.

Oh, we can argue semantics forever, but that'll do nothing against the evolution of language and shifting public perception.

Nowadays, "ARG" has become a catch-all term for any online narrative that's presented in a way where you can reasonably assume the narrator is actually experiencing the events of the story. A big part of that is keeping the storytelling consistent with the typical style and conventions of whatever forum or website it's being posted on.

So, even by that definition it's still not an ARG because nobody, not even the most pretentious faggots, use Twitter like that. Had it been posted on Reddit or its own blog then a stronger argument could be made for it, but as it stands it's just a shitty creepypasta.

I got weary when he joined the urbanSPOOK dogpile, but this video cemented full-on sell-out status.
I've unsubbed and only thing I've been tuning into is creepcast when there's nothing else to watch and that's mainly because Hunter carries it for me, even if his sperging can throw the pacing of the video off sometimes.
Red thread is boring and uninspired, having watched the first few episodes at the time as well as Wendigoon's podcast appearance it just felt like they only had him there because he's a hot commodity. Especially during the podcast it felt like the hosts were acting in a very passive-aggressive & demeaning way to the shit the dude believes in.

[
Sidenote, I have a retrospective problem with his take on urbanSPOOK. I don't personally think it's great but the dogshit he has/had to deal with is way out of line. His whole complaint boiled down to "it's too fucked up without meaning or MUH LOOOOREEEE", but shit like Pen Pal is great? I'm sorry but it's retarded.
Yeah, the writing is good, okay and?
The story is still about a gay pedo rapist kidnapper & murderer who's stalking a kid. If urbanSPOOK were to implement a twist of "Oh the artist is some entity/person that got here through abc means because of xyz" then to me they're on the same level. That's the only thing that is at this moment differing the two for me, urbanSPOOK is more immediate and raw because it needs to be due to the format it's presented in.
But the fact that the latter is presented in a different format leads to it being dragged through the mud. Because even if the creator had a larger plan in place for the story(not saying he has), you can't play open hand or release it immediately due to the format.
It's pretty much calling a pedo gay rapist murderer acceptable because he isn't also flashing kids at the park and is dressed a little nicer.

Also just joining the dogpile as people were calling for deplatforning etc is just bad coming from someone who's always jerking off about creative horror etc. You can not like the guy & his work, but I just take it as a nefarious thing that you actively participate in the dogpile. Art is art is art and again, you can not like it, but the timing of release just signals a message of low-key support to deplatforming of "wrong" art, even if not explicitly stated.

And the fact that this isn't remotely acknowledged by the guy, who's supposedly involved with a creative project (if he's still doing that) either makes me worry for said project or shows bad faith, in which case that confirms his selling out even more to me.

I especially hate the urbanSPOOK drama became these people claim to be horror aficionados. I'm not that big into horror, but even I know that SPOOK's work is following the long-established horror tradition of being fucked up for the sake of being fucked up. The attacks on urbanSPOOK for being tasteless and pointless feels like them shitting on the giant they stand on while SPOOK pays tribute to it.
