Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

With all of the supposed technological advancements in animation, we’ve ended up with 2D cartoons that move more robotically than some of the worst 1970s-1980s cartoons and yet if you complain about it, there are people in certain groups, circles, cliques and all who will see you as a crazy person who can’t be satisfied.

See why I don't care anymore? They brought this on themselves and not think beyond it.

I thought she could for Vampire Hunter D, maybe that was her more natural voice.

Well, not every woman who plays a boy can deepen it convincingly. It is what it is.
I can't imagine her not squawking like a boyish frog monster

I think the biggest issue your expressing is 2D rigging, which from what I understand is creating a skeletal model to animate on top of and then instead of animating the character every frame the animator just moves the rig.

I think it can be really useful if done properly or in certain animation styles, like for example if a show uses rigs for characters and makes the movement really smooth, but at the same time also puts more work into animating a lot of things in a scene or scenes I think that's a better use. Then for animation styles I think rigging can work really well for a show like south park where the characters are meant to look like shit so it doesn't matter much, but when they do need to put in a lot of detail they can.

I promise you these people are 100% 1) the chronically online animators themselves, 2) "friends" of the animators trying to get a job, 3) animation students wasting tens of thousands of dollars being taught those exact techniques in art school.

I just watched the trailer for K-Pop Demon Hunters, and I was surprised to find myself genuinely excited for its release. I haven't felt this way about an animated film in at least ten years.

It reminded me a lot of the "secret identity" girl shows of the 2000s, without any of the usual smug, liberal feminist deconstruction or cynicism, unless the trailer just did a good job of hiding it. Seeing the trio of girls being silly and crushing on demon boys made my heart ache a little, though. These days, most creative types seethe at the mere mention of girls being interested in romance or boys, as if it's not a natural and relatable part of most tween girls' lives as they grow up. I'd rather have them watch older stuff like 90s' Sailor Moon where girls constantly talk about handsome guys and get into wacky situations than the gross lifeless faggot fests like NuShe-ra or Hazbin Hotel.

Back then, gushing about opposite sex was the only thing women were allowed to have; now, it's the opposite. It's gone from one radical idea to another with no in-between or compromise. Hopefully, Kpop Demon Hunters will mark the beginning of a new era of female-led cartoons for girls, like Totally Spies, but without gross fetish content aimed at old perverted men. Just girl friendship, adventures, and cute boys to beat the shit out of uwu
I gave it a whirl despite having zero interest in k-pop. It may not be consciously woke, but I can't help but feel it would not have passed with the genders inverted. The demon boys gets objectified a lot, and there is no "le demons are innocent" twist but the only good one is the expendable male love interest. The last 30 minutes are kind of a mess. Demon king is a fart cloud who is beaten with no fanfare. No exploration of how the public reacts to a boy band get exposed as demons then slain on-stage before thousands of viewers. One of the hunter girls is half-demon but it's never explored why her mother reproduced with one, and her mentor is vilified for trying to hide it even though demon heritage is shown as inherently dangerous. Nor is it explained how the generational warrior-musicians are recruited, or why they have to be female, or if other countries have demon issues as well, or if government(s) are aware of the supernatural. I mistook it for a series at first, and that might have given it more space to breathe.

fun fact about tom and jerry: they were made for movie theaters like the looney tunes shorts so they just happened to have higher quality when more money was being put towards them than the hanna barbera cartoon era where you could clearly see the corners being cut to make it cheaper for television
Yep, same with Filmation in a different way.

The disney pixar movie Elio bombed and is the lowest debut in pixar history. You might have missed as the marketing was not the strongest. I sure did.

The movie was delayed for 2 years and had significant writing changes, indicating some dev hell. In the first (2023) trailer, Elio is kidnapped by aliens against his will and has to pretend to be earth's ruler to survive. Not a great trailer but an ok conflict.

In the second trailer (2025) is basically the opposite. Elio WANTS to be kidnapped and is super happy when he does and no threat or conflict shown.

People are blaming on marketing fumble, disney+ and original IPs not selling but i think the trailer was lame and people are tired of beanmouth artstyle. Some normie opinions:

Lilo and stich live action made almost a billion already so more remakes and sequels on the way.

I keep forgetting that Onward was a Pixar movie. The shitty (not) Jack Black character keeps throwing me off.

E: Actually, no. Fuck you. I'm not done.
When I heard about the concept for that film, I thought that it could be really interesting ...but they save having the dad actually speak until the end of the film for that cheap emotional moment.
I just wanted a film of two guys going on a roadtrip with the father they never knew.

The Mexican kid steals a white kids radio to contact the Aliens, the white kid bullies him for stealing his shit and he's treated by the movie as the bad guy.
Other than that I've heard it's vaguely shit.

Yeah, I’ve heard that it’s kind of a nothingburger at best from most people. With some questionable writing choices too, and boring designs. Aliens are usually great because you can do some fun things with their anatomy, but basically everyone in the movie is some form of soft blob.
I’ve also seen a couple spergs be like “W-well, you can’t not watch it just because of the art style! Having an art style you don’t like doesn’t mean it’s trash!”
If I’m going to be looking at something for 90 minutes and paying for tickets and snacks, then I think I’d like the characters to not be visually offensive, thank you very much. Oh, and said spergs think this could totally make a comeback like Elemental supposedly did. If more people talk about it.

It's even "worse": He steals the radio from a black kid who is friends with the white bully. The black boy participates in the bullying later, but only because of peer pressure. Of course, the two kids of color become friends in the end.
Overall a paint-by-numbers movie I had already half forgotten by the time the credits rolled.

3D animation was only viewed positively in the 2000s and 2010s when the medium wasn't overdone to shit by companies that pump out the same slop over and over again. I'm not the type to sperg out and say "3D=bad 2D=good" like some nostalgia driven millennial but a big part in why shit like the incredibles worked so well wasn't just because 3D animation of that level was new but also because the animators knew how to convey emotion with the color pallet of each scene alone (something all animators should know how to do). Additionally, the plot for a lot of these new projects are just complete ass and lack creativity.
>what if a kid wants to get taken in by aliens
>what if we make 10 more toy story movies but these ones are about modern tech

I understand that the target demographic for this shit is kids but they should understand by now that what gets them more money is millennials (disney adults). At least projects like inside out are somewhat creative and don't have a bad animation style.
