Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

If fusions are supposed to be a metaphor for sex/relationships/whatever, then........:(

So they're all fucking eachother? I don't really think thats the case. That idea seems to be a Tumblr meme.

Anyway, I watched it.

Pretty alright. Some plot elements were contrived and I wasn't a fan of the "fanservicy recapping" but whatever. Worth pirating if you've committed to the show this far. It wasn't predictable but it also wasn't insane or deep like some kind of space opera... but why would you even expect that?

Negatives

-They did that thing where they create a problem instead of dealing with what they already have.
-More than half of the film is basically recap of character arcs
-Some songs are aids - especially some of the battle songs
- Having a character preach morals and use diplomacy isn't as interesting when they're in a position of power (OP)

Positives
+Pretty aesthetic
+Starts slow but it contributes to the second half
+The recaps were well done despite my bitching. They captured the spirit of the characters
+Decent comedy at points - slapstick, disturbing stuff, old-episode references, etc.

Quick check onto tumblr
Apparently Greg and Steven fuse into, this.

Why? Why would anyone want this? For what reason?
honestly, this is one of the 'better' designs I've seen come out of this show. It has a kind of old school masculinity made young again vibe, which feels like a fitting design choice for a father and son whatever these fusions are. Although it's nothing amazing or even that good, it's just better then most SU stuff I see.

The worst part is every where I go, people have been saying how much they want to fuck this thing.

The SU fanbase makes anything sound sexier than it really is. Best to ignore that if you want to have any positive opinion on the show left in you.

this is a bit of a hot take, but in my opinion, Disney and Pixar have really great Tech behind their films, and writing (especially character writing) and there animation is pretty good of course.

But in terms of Film making, Atmosphere, movement/character animation/exaggeration and Direction, Dreamworks (when they try) Is much superior, and make Disney/Pixar movies look comparatively boring, sterile and simple.

I do suppose this is why my favorite pixar films are wall E and ratatouille, those movies far exceed other 3D Pixar/Disney movies in atmosphere, film making, direction etc, and keep up/surpass most dreamworks stuff.

But still outside those examples, even the worse dreamworks movies are generally more interestingly shot and directed then most disney/pixar stuff. Shame they can't shake their issues with writing and plot etc.

Just binge watched Archer on Netflix and I realized why many on Reddit and other similar sites love Archer.

it’s “humour” usually consists of constant inside, potty and pop culture jokes. Characters (usually Archer) tearing others down and being all around jerks to each other. And now Cyril seems to be the “Meg” of the show.

As funny as I found it at times, I don't know why people talk about why Cyril or Lana or Pam are such “annoying” characters. I really don’t see why they’re anymore annoying and self centred then Archer himself, whom many seem to like.

Probably because people tend to mimic the likes/dislikes of the character they enjoy. So because Archer finds those characters annoying, certain fans will also find them annoying. Even though Archer is as much a jerk as everyone else, like you said.

  • Agree

The problem with Pam is that she's a lol so random Borderlands-esque character who just spouts gross shit that isn't funny or clever. If they reduced her role to comic relief or gave her more depth, she'd be tolerable. But you can't expect viewers to care about a one-dimensional character who hasn't had a single funny line in 11 seasons.

Can I just say that Steven Universe "Musical" segments seem really awkward?

Like there's that joke of characters in musicals breaking out into song and dance for no reason, but when I see musicals in say, disney it transfers into the musical very smoothly and it makes sense, but in Steven Universe it seems like the characters just randomly break out into song and it just feels awkward.

Feel free to rate me late and gay on this for beating a dead horse, but I found something interesting.

In 2017, after the whole Chris Savino controversy which ended with him getting fired, various women in animation banded together and made an open letter to end sexual harassment in their workplace. And I found a certain name you might find familiar...

Well, OK K.O. is finished. The finale was great and the post-finale timeskip was a nice approach to wrap up the show.
  • Basically, TKO wreaks havoc during the plaza tournament and Thanos'd everyone including the antagonists. Turns out he was just a figment of K.O.'s negative emotions and ends up merging with him. Would have been better if he became Perfect K.O. since it makes more sense with a balance of the two.
  • I wish they didn't skimp out on a reunion scene when the gang came back to life. Then again, you can only do so much in a rushed, 22-minute running time.
  • I liked how Fink and Venomous became chaotic good, and it was sweet how she sacrificed herself for him. Ditto with the parallel of him as a father figure towards her like Mr. Gar is with K.O.
  • I thought Red Action would be more involved with "Thank You for Watching the Show".
  • It rubbed me the wrong way when Ian pulled the last-minute Enid/Red Action shipping out of his ass. Why he didn't just make Boxman and Venomous the only gay (or bi given Venomous' backstory) couple in the show is beyond me- unlike the former, they have a funny and unique Odd Couple vibe that adds more to their characters and relationship.
  • I suspect that the epilogue was made up of scrapped plots once Ian knew his show was going to be cancelled.
It's a shame that it didn't get much recognition outside of people criticizing the art style (which I agree with); if they went with the pilot designs and didn't cut corners with the animation, I think it would have been one of the better CN shows of the 2010s- great premise but a so-so execution. Overall, it's not super special, but still a cute show to watch if nothing else is on.

The full theme song that played over "Let's Fight to the End" is a real banger:

IMO, the show’s biggest problem was that it never decided what it wanted to be; sometimes it would be a fun, high paced action comedy cartoon for kids, sometimes it’s a throwback to older cartoons with references and shout outs only older audiences would get (many of the crossover episodes), sometimes it’s SU lite with things like social issue awareness and shipping for a Tumblr audience (many of the Enid centric episodes, the gun control special). This combined with the inconsistent art style really holds it back from being one of the best shows of the 2010s.
But it’s by no means a bad cartoon and when it gets good (i.e. it picks what it wants and sticks with it), it gets pretty good.
Also, if the ending is meant to be taken seriously, the whole Enid x Red Action thing really didn’t amount to much.
