Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Ah man, I have such a soft spot for Richard Condie:

I'm a HUGE sucker for experimental animation and am a bit sad it isn't implemented that much anymore in commercial media (any type of media really). Imagine randomly seeing strata cut animation as a segment in a TV show, the thing is all kind of trippy

With the rise and popularity of ToonBoom, some shows can be outsourced to closer locations, I just hope this won't increase crunch time for the animators..

How much I bet he turns out to be a pedo
I know this is old news at this point but welll...

Yeah he sure is a pedo alright.

Not to be confused with SOMA For Kids by the same people

The NFB was so based from the 1950s to 1995.
True about how the NFB used to be during those years. Probably why I don't care for anything they made past that point.

Here's one I always felt had potential to be it's own TV series had it been developed as such...

It got a sequel though.

Richard Condies style looked familiar to me. Yep, he's that guy.

I thought this was one of his too. It turns it's just the noses.

I saw it exactly once when I was knee-high, but that ending scarred me. To this day when the toast gets stuck in the toaster, this flickers through my mind.

I guess it did its job.

That first film is from Cordell Barker, though Condie got to voice the guy in this short.

The other guy who did "Hot Stuff", Zlatko Grgic, came from Croatia where he created the famous Professor Balthazar series. In his later years he taught animation at Sheridan College.

It’s not directly comparable, since most Japanese animation is still done in-house (or outsourced to other Japanese studios) while to my knowledge most Western animation nowadays is outsourced to Korean sweatshops, and the actual animators. I’m curious to know which cartoons if any are still primarily animated in the US.
You're not wrong that they're not exactly 1:1. I dunno man, I just wish we could do better with what we have.

I would say they still have a decent documentaries unit but I feel like the world has outpaced their need. Most of the new animation projects can't be accessed outside a paywall, which sucks because there's some neat pinscreen stuff I'd love to see.

Hah, this short scared the fuck out of me when it aired on basic cable in the 90s.

Anyways, here's today's find: an early Mike Judge short.

Classic! One of his early efforts when he started his animation journey! Here's another!

And now archer has lost the closest thing to a mother and father he ever had (Mallory and woodehouse) if there were ever a time to lay a series to rest now is that time hard to believe Archers been on for over a decade now. That's never good with any show but especially bad for western animation..... Well since we're sharing feels in western animation I'd like to dedicate this next post to @BerriesArnold (quoting it won't do it justice)

Here's another NFB short, which won an award in a category you'd never guess - Best Short Documentary, of all things.
The director of Neighbour is Norman McLaren and he has some really interesting short films in his arsenal! Albeit very abstract.

When he started making films he didn't yet own a camera, so he drew directly on film instead - that's what made his early animation so fluid.

Oooooh I love this one! He tells the story of this guy in the commencement speech he gave at his college - it was really really good speech in general

Recomendation for Halloween: The angry beavers Halloween special The day the earth got really screwed up. It's not strong on story but it's chock full of homages to classic horror from the golden age. The animation and character design on the humans and monsters is very remiscient of the EC comics, almost like the animators used them for inspiration. They even got Adrian Barbaue as a guest star. (of creepshow, From Beyond, Reanimator)

Fun fact - there was supposed to be a second Angry Beavers Halloween special called "The Very Loud Screams of the Night Beast." This would have been inspired by the classic Hammer horror films. The plot would have been about Daggett getting bitten by a vampire, and Terence Stamp and Sheena Easton would have guest starred. Unfortunately, it never got made.

Such a shame. I would've loved more of that.

I think I know why the idea was scrapped, the catdog Halloween special that aired the same year as the angry beavers one used a very similar plot. One of the brothers (dog in this case) getting bit by a vampire and all. Sure it's not exactly the same as what was planned for angry beavers but it is close enough they probably didn't want to be accused of ripping the other show off.

You may be right, but I don't actually know when the idea was proposed, so I can't say for sure... (And the Angry Beavers one had aired the year before the CatDog special.)

The CatDog Halloween special was a fun one, though. Some good lines and a fun song:

They’re going to have one more season to deal with the loss, yet how they’re talking about it really sounds like that’ll be it. Ending the series at 10 non-coma seasons sounds like a good time to let it be.

Cat: Dog you shall get you're greasy disgusting taco, even if I have to eat one myself!

Dog: yeah two heads are more than One!

NGL, every time i saw the taco depot episode of catdog as a kid i always legit got hungry for taco bell. *sigh* good times, goood times.
