Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Regular show while not an amazing cartoon will always be great for how it pushed the PG rating for innuendo and adult jokes as far as it could for a CN show. It’s kind of amazing how they got past the censors, great stuff.
Ribgy: how the H are we gonna fix this s?

Mordecai: ughh what IS THAT STUFF?!
Unicorn: it's definitely NOT unicorn sclump!

(Not to mention one of those unicorns had pierced nipples and the other was clearly dressed as Alex delarge from clockwork orange)

Rigby Benson's gonna drop his balls when he sees how good we set up the chairs!

Benson: Get back here and pick up my gumballs!

Mordecai: one day Rigby you'll learn the real reason people go to concerts.

I used to love this show as a kid. The Secret Railroad is a Canadian show done in the late 70s.

Sadly, it seems to be lost to time. Real bummer, because it's kind of weird and surreal and holds up well.

So, I watched The Cuphead Show, and I thought it was pretty fun. But then, for some reason, they decided to just end the first season on a cliffhanger.
I'm halfway through!
It's nothing extrodinary, but it's pretty fun!
The visual gags are relly good, the water colour BG's are beautiful and I LOOOOVE that they've included the Fleisher's live action background into the show, like the game! The throwbacks to the game are generally pretty fun, just wish there'd be a bit more. But then again, I've more to watch. The editing is worth a shout-ou too, it's very energetic.

That being said, I think the character's personalities are a bit plain and basic, particularly Cuphead's and Mugman's. they're kinda...stuff happent to them, rather than them causing events to happen. It doesn't give me much insinght over how they work and think as characters. I expected them to be much more energetic and unhinged than they're lastly presented. They're voices harmonise super nicely when they talk or scream at one tho.
I'm not too bothered by it too much now, because I attribute this to it being just the first season, and the writers haven0t have developeda a good feel for the char's yet.
I feels as tho a lot of the jokes are disconnected from the story or what the character's are feeling/experiencing in that moment. Like an episode has a very interesting and fun premise, but will then have a bunch of jokes that are unrelated to it, and it just breaks up the flow. But then again that's a qualm I have with a lot of modern shows, and Cuphead is not the biggest offender of thhis.
There's a loooot of references to 30's shorts, that we're kinda distracting to me - mostly because I think the references don't always match the best with the plot or character's emotions. You know, like I said above, it feels like weird things happen to the brothers mostly unprovoked, rather than them provoking the weirdness.
I don't know if it was reall necessary to make two references specifically to Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher, mostly I don't see how this adds anything to the characters? A lot of the song number were very boring, to me. I don't think they did a good job introducing the characters or providing information about them that wasn't conveyed troughout the story anyway.
Also, the second introduction of the devil was so much cooler and menacing than his first one! What's up with that?!

The animation could use some more streching and squashing in my opinion, and the smears look kinda awkard, but otherwise it's servicable. The dancing shot from that was used for promo material was jonestly the worst shot of the series so far. Dunno why they used that. I like how they replicated the faint shadows around the characters that was common in cell animation. The expressions & stills are fucking gorgeous. So good.

I'm sperging wondering if in the future they'll ever make a completela silent episode. That'd be so bitching sweet! Because the visual comedy really is the show'sstrongest point, and it would do great for the writers (and storyboarders?) to convey an entire story just trough them gags. It would really make the MC's shine too!

It's a bit hit or miss, but the stuff that is good is really good.

EDIT: M'kay, the further along I watch, the better the quality gets. The disconect between jokes and story/emotions lessens too.

The devil is loads of fun.

Dang, I- I'm happy.

While I think of it, I should also recommend Blake and Mortimer.

Another France/Canada production (seriously, the 90s were a golden era for that) based on a French comic published around the same time as Tintin. It's another adventure series ala the Tintin comics/animated series, except this features two adults as its main characters. One is a professor and one is a former soldier and intelligence officer. It has more sci-fi/supernatural elements than Tintin or Nighthood, but it's solid and a fun watch.

Blake & Mortimer was very good indeed and here one more to add to the list is the 1993-94 animated version of the Adventures of Spirou & Fantasio done by Tome and Janry. The only drawback is they didn't covered the Franquin era due to Andre Franquin who owned back then the rights of their animal companion, the Marsupilami.

Well, Disney kind of had the rights then...

The final episode of Arthur aired today February 21st 2022. Ending the show on its 253rd épisode well after 25 years of airtime since it’s debut on PBS on October 7th 1996. This makes it the longest running children’s cartoon ever and the second longest running animated show in the US after The Simpsons. Arthur was a great show that dealt with many mature themes like relationships, family troubles, anxiety, life struggles and mature themes like death and hell even Autism. I and many others will greatly miss it and hope that it continues to teach and entertain generations of kids well after it’s end. Thank you Marc Brown.

Classic clip

MeTV's morning animation block has been airing a lot of Columbia cartoons lately, giving us the opportunity to discover such incredibly weird cartoons as this:

You won't believe the ending.

Oh, yes, and one of the other cartoons they showed was a Fox and Crow short. Will we soon see Mr. Magoo or Gerald McBoing-Boing on TV again?

I don't think i like We Baby Bears anymore...
I've said it once, and I'll say it again: modern Western television animation is no longer for children anymore. It's for the man and womanchildren who are terminally online and therefore believe all media should cater only to their sensibilities and no one else's. Why else would something batshit like this said about a Cartoon Network cartoon be agreed upon by one of the developers of said cartoon?

It also doesn’t help that the majority of animators in today‘s Western Animation are childless and drugged up with political agendas that have nothing to do with the cartoons in question.

Not that I’ll judge you Kiwis being unable to have children due to financial/medical reasons

This makes the woman from the Owl House force a relationship between two teenage girls to impress Twitter followers with pronouns in their bio look like a saint.

Since the early 2010s, I fee like animation falls into a few camps. Either it is corporate by nature and just cashing in, look at a majority of CN or Nick's lineups, they are not woke but are just there to fill time. Key examples of this are shit like Pig Goat Banana Cricket, Ben 10 reboot, Robot & Monster, and, admittedly, Teen Titans Go. They are dumb colors which may have some passion, but are the usual mediocre programming that has been around for decades.

The next category I will just call the Avatards. These are the shows run by people that claim animation is for adults, yet have only ever watched children's television. They are desperate to leave a legacy as good as Batman TAS, Avatar The Last Airbender, or even Adventure Time. These shows were praised for how adult their subject matter and philosophies could be, so now all these modern animators are trying to rekindle that magic. The issue is that many of these series had a lot more brevity than one would depict. Batman would go on multiple episodes before hitting a 'Heart of Ice' type story. There was fun to be had in-between the conflict, but modern writers want that dark conflict to be the focus hence why politics have been tacked on. They are writing children's shows to be those adult episodes that make top 10 lists, more so than what the shows actually were.
