Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
>tfw a random nobody on the Internet parodying a 90s platformer can come closer to the spirit of 90s animation than actual professionals in the field

Exactly. It's OK when we racially stereotype, because we're doing it in the name of DIVERSITY!
I wouldn't even mind it that much if they had more to say about the culture itself. Granted, Kids Next Door also had a Japanese character who was really into cute stuff akin to kawaii culture in Japan, but to me that didn't feel as forced.
The CalArts style has so many inconsistences that the lines between each category tend to blur a lot.
I thought this show was a part of the We Bare Bears universe at first. I think Craig of the Creek looks better when they're trying to emulate the anime artstyle, ironically enough. I'd rather watch that clip they put near the end with the boy and plant fairies than the actual show itself.

I wished the anglo cartoons had many genres for animation. I've been watching japanese sports anime and chink powerlevel autismo xianxiawhatever shows for a while this year. while they are very cliche at least it's nice to look at and is entertaining. Why hasn't there been american sports cartoons? After looking at the autism that is burger sports fandoms it should have a lot of potential watchers.
Yes I get it, cartoons = kids, no budget, cartoon makers are fatties/loser activists, and etc. But why hasn't cartoon network, nickelodeon or disney got to making some full on basketball/handegg shows? 🤔
I should also count my blessings too since sport animes are either filled with obnoxious fujoshitters (male cast) or coomers/pedos/trannies (female cast)

Some have tried in the past and the success didn't knock at the door. The images speak for themselves.

It looks way too easy.

Because American sports are culturally less about the game and more about teams and tribalism. Nobody actually gives a shit about FOOTBALL. It's about sticking it to other college or being able to annoy coworker that his team lost.

Reminded this had to pop up. Someone wanted to pass off his take of a cartoon that never happened, based on a 90's video game.
This is impressively well done. Almost had me fooled that this looked legit. Even more impressive that he took the time to go through all of those voice clips from the 3 games considering Gex talks AAAAAALOOOOOOOT in them.

I never played the Gex games so it's amusing that they snuck in a Rodney King reference in them.
Their good platformers, although 2 and 3 are 3D, so the controls and camera are a bit wonky.

This was also back in the 90's where you could get away at poking fun at anything, Gex was supposed to be like another Bubsy, except a real comedia (Dana Gould) actually did Gex's voice (unless you were in Europe, in which case you got Leslie Phillips as Gex's voice)

The games came out at the right time and place.

Late reply, but it was implied in the later seasons that Fionna and Cake is an actual alternate universe where it's events were projected into Ice King's head.
I remember there being a lot of retarded retcons and "status quo is God"ing in AT but that one has got to be in the top 5. I hate how jokes can't remain as such anymore. They have to be promises or prophecies for the future.

A simple photo would've been enough to get the message across. Bonnie saying that people who think her and Marcy shouldn't be together are "buttheads" just smells out virtue signal.
You can't be prideful without being a smug, annoying shitbucket to everyone. It's part of the job description.

I can't stand how disgusting Craig of the Creek looks. I didn't think they can shit out a show uglier than Steven Universe, but they did. Bravo CN

These are pretty bad but I thought "Clarence" was uglier.
You could put all these cartoons that started popping up in 2010s to now and it'd look like "The Evolution of Man" in reverse.

Never played Gex myself but like Bubsy I saw it pop up everywhere on youtube. I watched a review of the PAL version. Sounding like the Geico gecko was a better choice.

Hollywood TV animation is such an dysgenic oligarchic wasteland, this era of beanmouth kiddie shows that are mostly written by and for neurotic YA-novel reading adults is almost as creatively sterile as the 1980s, where for every watchable show there were 50,000 stiff, bland toy commercials and any attempt at creativity was discouraged. The best thing about the 90s after the revival of classic (true) animation production methods was the proliferation of different art styles - but the biz has homogenized back to two or three dominant styles since. The biggest tell that western animation is in a slump isn't just the existence of "Beanmouth" it's that there's only 2 or 3 other main art styles at all and one of them is "Adult Cartoon Sitcom". Anything outside of these will probably not get made in the current environment. And if someone did make a sports-themed show these days, it wouldn't be allowed to be exciting. The closet thing to a "sports cartoon" in recent years was that awful short-lived Netflix Adult Cartoon Sitcom about a basketball coach that was mostly "cussing is funny" "jokes".

Lazy people who staff the Toon business today, and their online defenders, will always cite "style" and/or "budget" as an excuse for lack of skill, will and effort. All you ever hear from shills of beanmouth cartoons and shit like Jellystone in particular is how "cheap" and "stiff" the old classic Hanna-Barbera shows like the Flintstones were, when they'd have more funny images in a 25-second stretch than most modern shows have in an entire season. These people will write off classics like the Looney Tunes shorts as just a bunch of characters having anvils dropped on their heads, just dumb slapstick - and that's just the people trying to homage them "respectfully" like with the extremely hit-or-miss recent Looney Tunes shorts.

The American industry is filled with hacks who are contemptuous of their audience and of any animation older than a seemingly arbitrary date - they and their shills will cry over how mean people are for daring to criticize the latest stiff Rick-and-Morty-style biting cartoon shitcom or CGI beanmouth nonsense "how dare you insult this new show, people worked hard on it!" and then spout off about how "every animation from over 10 years ago was worked on by total hacks and you're a manchild if you support any of them".

It's those people who are saying the animation world is going back to the 80s. They're the ones sounding the alarm.

I'm very late to this but I wanted to give my thoughts
This hurt a little when I heard the news
I grew up with the graphic novels, and to this day I consider Bone to be one of the best comic series ever created
I was looking forward to seeing my childhood favorite be brought to life, but some things I guess were never meant to be
If you haven't checked these books out yet do yourself a favor and go read them, I highly recommend this series
