Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

It's not good (and apparently made by the same folks who did Bojack Horseman).

Another one bites the woke piss. *sigh*

No abandoned pools...smh...

Anyway I somewhat enjoyed this.

The animation is...oh god it's rough to look at. I miss frame by frame so much, I hate tweens. I'm assuming this is a work cut because some shots definitely look better than others.

I have modest hopes for this reboot though, the art director behind Long Gone Gulch is working on it (unless she got kicked for having good ideas), and I've been marathoning Clone High on youtube since I was an actual Freshman in Highschool. It is very near and dear to my heart, so even if the pilot is shoddy, maybe they could stick the landing. The first episode of the original wasn't perfect either. I will say, yeah, the references to modern culture are kind of cringe, but, I think they're using this episode to get it out of their systems. The original series was a satire of teen soap operas that still managed to stand on its own merits. A show like Velma cannot stand on its own merits so it tries very hard to be likable and transgressive while also saying nothing at all. I think this show might be different, it takes jabs at both revisionist history and modern Pc culture.

I don't mind Frida Kahlo and Harriet Tupman so much, okay I think their designs look a little stupid, but I don't mind them because they become friends with Joan, and Joan is goth. Goths are typically social outcasts, so they end up hanging out with the weird alternative looking people. Plus you gotta realize, there are a lot of different people working in the industry today, that probably wanted changes. Sometimes you make changes or you don't make a show.

So the Clone High Reboot Pilot has been leaked and...

If Clone High is like this now, I can only fear what they did to Gandhi. Adding the people behind Bojack Horseman is just proof that people have not learned anything from Rick & Morty “humor” from 2015.

That sucked, most of the new characters look like fan made and don't fit with the older ones and of course Frida and cotton candy hair girl are cool and popular. The humor is also pretty bad, the whole Abe gets cancel bit was so fucking boring and it ends saying nothing other than being a waste of time, also has the series ever being this gory? I swear that besides the lame attempts to do CURRENT YEAR references the other only type of joke was "character gets hurt and there's a lot of blood".

I was wondering if the gore was way more over the top here. I don't remember there being such abject violence in the original beyond the episode where abe and gandhi invent the electric fork knife.

I have yet to watch a full episode of clone high and even this was a bit hard to watch at times. Most of the current year jokes are cringe and fall flat, the episode absolutely gets rushed til the end and Ghandi is still stuck in the freezer. They don't bring back the damn title theme song either, smdh missed opportunity. Abe being Politically Incorrect was kinda funny but again it all kinda gets rushed and over with within the last 5 or so minutes. I will say I'm kinda shocked they managed to capture the overall feel and look of the art from the original. Yes the tweened animation doesn't look as good as frame by frame but it's literally to be expected in the current sphere of animated shows. Just be grateful it looks about as close as you could get it to be while still on a budget. Overall I hope if this reboot comes out future eps will be better but Current Year:tm: has reared its ugly head before in cases like these. 6/10

instead of talking about politispergs and the monstrosity that is Velma, let's talk about funny facts in animation. This scene in Invader Zim was supposed to have cars drive through explaining why they're yelling at each other (then again Zim yells all the time), when the animators simply forgot to put the cars in, it was kept this way due to being funnier that way.

why the fuck does this work so well

I just reread an eariler ppsy complaining how every weatern cartoon looks the same and you know what? western animation has NO excuse to look as lazy as it does. Especially with computer technology you know why? Because shows like ed edd n eddy and the first season of spongebob exist.

Ed edd n eddy was traditionally cel animated for 6 years, while spongebob was traditionally animated for most of its first season. And when both of those shows switched to digital animation the only major change was everything looked cleaner and brighter in contrast to the slightly smugged and airbrushed look of traditional cel animation.

An episode of season 5 EENE and season 5 spongebob AND episodes of season 5 fairly and season 15 simpsons were all digitally animated and airing around roughly the same time yet I can tell each of those shows apart stylistically because they put effort onto the character design of each show. So every hack with a drawing tablet and enough money to spare ro buy a toonboom license has no excuse to keep copy and pasting the same heads and faces from whatever starter assets those programs offer.

Western animation seems to be undergoing some anime-ification, having one main uniform style that people just edit off of. It makes sense as the 2010s got more and more filled with anime wannabes compared to any other decade. Artists are parroting the cheap chibi art style to write their, typically, magical girl show.

Other factors are just companies not funding animation and most show runners coming from the same clique. I can pull up the infamous Flapjack timeline, but it really does highlight how every big show from CN and Disney came from the same group of individuals. It is just a lot of writer stagnation and model sharing in an industry slowly being destroyed by higher ups.

I am kinda surprised Spongebob hasn't opted to go for tween'd animation yet considering how Fairly Odd went down that path for like the last half of its season + how greedy Viacom can get.
