Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I was with family - missed this, but we had to sit through a good chunk of the Super Bowl on Nick due to it being the only option available and Mom wanting to watch Usher's halftime show - holy SHIT it was cringe as all fuck. Something about seeing Dora the Explorer commenting on IRL football just...rubbed me the wrong way. We had a good time heckling it though

In fact, why do ALL the Spongebob characters look REALLY fucking bad???
I'd recognize those models anywhere, they're upscales of the ps2/gamecube THQ spongebob game models. They look good in the original game, albeit a bit weird with the realistic desaturated lighting on them, but this is like the playstation all stars spike model shit where they upscale a model and give it textures that make it look uncanny. I'd say these were from the recent HD remake but those don't look this scuffed.
For context, PS allstars used upscaled models of the cel shaded versions of ape escape characters from a spinoff title "million monkeys" but gave them realistic flesh with pores and shit which grotesquely contrasted with the simplistic cartoony anime artstyle.

Richard Williams deserves the title of Stanley Kubrick of Animation. Despite making so few works ( big theatrical works I mean) they left an impact ot just on animation but cinema as a whole. If you look his work on the pink panther movies, raggedy Ann and Andy and especially thief and the cobbler something about his animation is just....it shouldn't be humanly possible at least not with the technology he had at the time.

Imagine traditional hand drawn animation not only in 60fps and so gorgeously smooth it puts Disney to shame, but in 4k years before the general public had 4k display technology.
Don't forget about Gene Deitch. Both animators deserve way more credit
The fact they used PS3-era video game assets for SpongeBob and Patrick as vtuber-esque sports commentators just screams desperate, let alone creepy.

For all the crap people gave Gene for Tom & Jerry, I feel his other work far outweighs those negatives...
I'll just leave it here

When Tom's owners in the hanna barbera era got mad at him it was (usually) justified. Throwing a party while away at bridge club, eating the leftover chicken and framing spike for it, ect.

Clint was a typical 1950s/60s man's man who wanted to grill, camp, and fish in peace only for his cat to constantly get in his way.

I was recommended a bunch of Disney Channel shows from the new era and I looked into them and this is probably weird but wtf is up with these clumps of hyperspecific nationalities?

You got Amphebia, main character is Thai-American and her best friend is Taiwanese-American.

Her TOXIC friend is white of course.

You got Owl House, main character is Dominican-American.

You got Hailey's On It, main character is Hawaiian-American, not-love interest is South Korean-Filipino-American, lesbain side character is also South Korean-Filipino-American, you got Mexican-American, you got African-AAmericans.

Only white guy is evil.

Even The Ghost And Molly McGee has a Thai-Irish-American main character.

Probably not a groundbreaking observation from my part but I just kinda find it weird how hyperspecific these nationalities are as if they matter. Evidently they are deeply based on the creator's personal lives, some of them outright being men, and it's weird and freaky.

Goddamn, I miss the old days of Jake Long; American Dragon, and Juniper Lee.

Terrytoons' version of Clint Clobber was more like the Hank Hill of the late-50s, a boomer that's more relatable to other boomers during the era of rise of suburban homing post-WW2 that wants to grill his fish.

We all do. Whites are just out of the picture now as we venture into this "Brave New World" we didn't ask for.

I think Velma was the point where a lot of people really started wondering how often cartoon creators are self inserting themselves and use their creation to live out fantasies or vent over people and other personal experiences they hated.
Bad enough as is but where it goes to shit is when they get political or gender bend themselves.

Or racebend. The Owl House is literally the white creator's autobiography but with a non-white flavor for....reasons?

I remember rubbing my chin in thought at how much the Thai part of her ancestry was focused on, to the point Molly had a breakdown over not being "Thai" enough, but doesn't seem to give a shit about her Irish half. I also did autistically notice Molly was super involved in the Hanukkah episode with Libby and it got into the religious background of it. But in the Christmas episode, Libby the Jew didn't even bother to show up and the episode doesn't even remotely touch on the religious aspect of the holiday. That second one is assuredly nothing, but you just never know these days.

True, whatever agenda's being pushed by these writers over who's included or not.
