Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I don't know if it has been posted here already, but I've found a channel that posts cartoon pitch sessions of indie animators. Worth a watch.

Spoiler: "Why are big evil corporations never (which is not true btw) give a chance to small cReeAtIvE internet projects?" - THAT'S why. Literally almost every single one of them is either a wannabe Hazbin Hotel or some dull ass gay romcom/slice of life snooze fest nobody gives a shit about.

Character designs are either "I want it to be like anime, but can't draw anime" or unappealing blobs, and don't even let me start on how unreasonably difficult some of them to animate due to the amount of useless details (again, Hazbin Hotel and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race). The character themselves are mostly "soft boy beans UWU" or edgy gay OCs (just looks at these fancy ass fantasy names). Or both. Or just boring ass people.

Oh, and politically the creators are exactly who you think they are politically.

But there are some nice projects in the presentations. And I like the idea of such pitch meetings in general, so no hate towards the channel itself. I really want to see more (for many reasons albeit, but still).

They shouldn't be able to sell out. The moment they get any more ambitious, Games Workshop should hit them with a C&D and it'll kill them just like TTS.
I don't think you know how copyright laws work. TTS was literally just 40k, using official Games workshop owned artwork, models, characters etc. It was begging to get its shit slapped by Games Workshop once they started monetizing it. I say that as someone who loved TTS.

Space King hasn't done any of that and is all unique content with unique characters. The fact that the extremely litigious Games Workshop hasn't C&D'd them yet is a big sign that they can't find anything to C&D them with.

Its just a very poor comparison between the two.

I cannot wait to see her shitty writing without Disney to be her tard wrangler. You know it’s gonna be a dyke as the main character and being “unapologetically gayyyyy!!!” I cannot wait for reality to smack her across the face like Vivziepop when normal people don’t eat up the retarded “gay character=good show” defense.
Reminder that these are frames of the season 3 opening for the Owl House after it came back from hiatus.

A Latino mother would not immediately accept her daughter as bisexual. None of these fucks show anyone processing their child coming out to them. Something so nerve wrecking that could split apart a family is treated so childish….
You know it's pretty fucking dire in the current state of animation and gender shit when American Dad tackled unaccepting parents of their gay offsprings more realistically than whatever these figureheads are shitting out on station.
It's either they're 100% accepting no questions asked :optimistic: (Owl House) or portrayed super weird and unreasonable (Moongirl and the troonphobic terf coach), no room for gray areas.

You know, a thought occurs that if they actually wanted to do a good story about coming out, they could have that be an episode (or an arc of episodes) for their show. I know gay shit usually gets a show cancelled immediately so they don't ever have the time to fully explore that, but imagine if they did and went that route.
Luz comes home from Witch World and has her gay little presentation, but her mom isn't blindly supportive. She's shocked and overwhelmed and confused, and this whole cutesy silly spiel introducing the idea to her makes Luz look like she's not taking this seriously and she's joking, or it's a phase, or it means something different in Witchland, etc. Luz has to regroup and come back to her mom later in a more serious, quiet moment. Less "HI I'M BI" and more "Do you still like me?" and after time passes her mom can be like "of COURSE I like you wtf I just don't want you to have it even harder than you have to" or whatever her complaint about the gay thing is. Hell, didn't the witch gf's mom hate her kid for being gay or something? Or dying her hair? Luz and witch girl could bond about it before Luz revisits her mom, it could be a whole Thing.
Even that shitty Moongirl terf story, that could be turned around into something. Terf coach hates the trans kid, locks them in the bathroom or whatever, then the game's gonna be DQ'd because Moongirl's team didn't show up and everyone is miserable and terf's daughter can be like "I'd rather play a BOY than play nobody at all." Terf coach talks to Moongirl's coach and she can voice an actual human opinion like "My girls have fought, I have fought, so hard to get to where we are and it feels like boys and men keep taking that away," and the woke coach can be all "I get it. My girls are fighting hard too, in fact one of 'em is fighting to even have a place here," and then the terf coach can unlock the bathroom door herself and be like "I was wrong to deny you a chance to play, but don't think my girls are gonna go easy on you just because you're a faggot."
I get the constraints the given shows have, and I get why the people aren't interested in fleshing out their characters as real people instead of cardboard cutouts to prop up their political beliefs, but if they really wanted to have some kind of coming out story in their cartoon there are absolutely ways to go about doing it in nuanced and interesting ways. I wrote those in like 5 minutes and I'm not even a professional, come ON.

They could also just use a creative metaphor rather than being on the nose about "coming out" in a show meant for elementary to middle school kids who haven't even gone through puberty yet.

I laugh every time someone complains that animation isn't taken seriously, because this is exactly why. Practically every animator i've seen is utterly incapable of making something that isn't utterly uninspiring and/or is more mature than an edgy high schooler. Remember during one of the oscars (i think) where they made a joke about that? This shit is why, its no wonder they laugh at animation.
You will never be a real medium. You have no compelling characters, you have no compelling story, you have no stakes. You are a medium forever bound to immaturity and manchildren.
All the “validation” you get is two-faced and half-hearted. Behind your back people mock you. Upper management pities your existence, and your “friends” laugh at your ghoulish art style behind closed doors.
Companies are utterly repulsed by you. Decades of experience have allowed them to sniff out failures with incredible efficiency. Even artists who “make it” produce boring and mediocre shows. Your OC's are a dead giveaway. And even if you convince a studio to go along with your idea, they’ll turn tail and bolt the second your contract dries up.
Your IP will never be taken seriously. You wrench out a fake smile every single morning and tell yourself it’s going to be ok, but deep inside you feel the depression creeping up like a weed, ready to crush you under the unbearable weight.
Eventually, it’ll be too much to bear - you'll set up an NSFW Twitter, create a Patreon, and open commissions. A recruiter will find you, heartbroken but relieved as another weight set on them is lifted off their shoulders. Your Twitter account will be buried among the thousands of other NSFW accounts, and every Coomer will forget your existence the second they tab out. Your life will fade into mediocrity, and all that will remain of your legacy is that off a conceded porn artist.
This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

"Random object for a head" is one of the most unoriginal character designs as of late. The amount of faggy youtube OCs I see with that giving the peace sign is hilarious. Bonus points if they're in a suit or hoodie.
Yeah, I hate it. The worst part is that those characters all look the same. All TV-heads look like one character in different outfits. Same thing with protogen furries.

When Seth Mc-FUCKIN-Farland can write better gay side characters that are genuinely funny with personalities, its fuckin over. Boomers making better gay characters than younger adults is a massive sign that these fucks don't care about rep. They care about their little friend group and terminally online teenagers.

I feel like Seth's gay characters (and even Quagmire's transgender dad) work because he's starting from a "making fun of gays" point and is expecting to/isn't afraid of offending people to begin with. He can get actual meat off of these characters because he's not afraid to scrape the bone. The zoomers are too afraid to offend anyone to even scrape past the topmost layer of skin.

It's not safe edgy to poke fun at trannies.

It's funny that this is meant to be a joke when it's exactly fucking right, especially in regard to indie shows.
This is practically it, the modern cartoon zeitgeist is being led by mostly late 90s to post 2000s era otaku/fujos who can't get beyond "referencing" shit from sailor moon & princess utena
