Motherfucker that's not even localization or translation, that's literally just changing shit. You would be able to hear them say "Meri kurisumasu", why would they change it??

i've fucking had it with localizers after suffering two decades of their bullshit. i thought one piece was lame for most of my life because i only saw the 4kids version until like 2013. i hate playing dragon quest because everyone speaks like retards and the asshole that leads the translation team thinks he's so witty writing so many stupid writing quirks into the game. whoa, look, the people living in this japanese-ish region all speak in haiku, the mermaids speak in rhymes, everyone the viking village speaks in super ESL isn't that so charming? NO! FUCK YOU! those are just obvious examples of translators fucking with their translations, there's a lot of changes they make that fly under the radar because they aren't so obviously incorrect. but oh that's not cultural appropriation, they're just taking someone else's culture and making it 1:1 with ours! don't you see? that makes it ok to completely screw up entire character-defining or even series-defining lines!

Oh you didn't hear about this? Yeah, Umamusume global did it during the Christmas event and it caused a shitstorm because you can hear the girls say "Merry Christmas" in English and they captioned it as "Happy Holidays".

The argument this particular retard presents just plain doesn't work though, on three levels:

1) It totally disregards the watcher having working ears. If I can hear them speaking English then translate it as English "different meaning" be damned. Leave that up to me to figure out.

2) It totally disregards the fact that there is a degree of regionality to Christmas celebrations, the Christmas Tree was originally a German tradition, Santa Claus was originally Scandinavian, things like Christmas Crackers that they only do in the UK, etc. The Japanese Christmas traditions are not so far beyond the pale that you would not recognize Japanese Christmas celebrations as Christmas Celebrations. Not by a long shot. Hell, Christmas in and of itself was a specifically Catholic holiday for centuries, Protestants did not celebrate it at all, even considered it heretical in many places.

3) He falls into his own trap with the "Joly Yule" translation. "Yule" isn't some made up word, it's a real celebration with its own traditions and holds no cultural, aesthetic, or spiritual meaning to the Japanese people and holds no resemblance to Japanese Christmas celebrations. So he commits the exact same mistake he professes to fix by not using "Merry Christmas".

Pokémon was just marketed better and made a bigger splash being the first to come out here before Digimon could make its mainstream debut. Digimon only got recognized due to the playground wars, and even then, Pokémon won by sheer power and numbers (accessibility, really) alone.

And I'm saying this as a fan of both properties who is also a stan of the English dub *taps username*. It's an obvious product of the '90s and I love it anyway.

The Ghost Stories dub definitely had its funny moments, but this definitely rings true. It's in essence an official version of those "abridged" series on YouTube, I loved those but they're better off being fan works.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX has the same issue with its own dub. While it's less self-referential, it tends to give one-shot characters weird voices, even during crucial episodes.

For context, there's one episode where Ryo/Zane takes part in an underground duel with a shock collar in place to hurt him whenever he takes damage. This, coupled with a string of losses beforehand, pushes him past his breaking point, a pivotal moment for his character.
While the dub is mostly the same with Zane, his opponent (who's supposed to be the card game equivalent to an underground fighter) talks and acts like a child.
And somehow, this doesn't even crack the top five weirdest GX dub voices.

The dub is fine for singular, isolated, lines. But the show and episodes as a whole just don't mesh, the show was way ahead of its time frankly. It seems purpose built for youtube shorts and tiktoks of "[show] out of context" videos.

Just use LLMs, they can do the job better, faster, and for pennies.

There is literally no argument one could use to justify keeping these cretins on your payroll when an LLM can do the job in 5 minutes.

All you need is a good-enough workflow and enough context when prompting to give the AI some idea of what is going on.

A trained chimp could churn out accurate translations free of politics by the hundreds on a daily basis.
