haven't seen it
Great flick, terminally underrated due in large part to the fact that it was from Universal and came out circa 1994 and so it was competing with Prime Time world eater Disney films like Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King as well as Pixar's first crop of films.
haven't seen either
Both are good films, I didn't like Bolt when it first came out but it's grown on me over the years, Lady and The Tramp is an all-time classic though, the first one at least the second one was 90's Disney straight to video trash. The only good straight to video Disney sequel is Lion King 2, which I would go so far as to say is actually better then the first one.
Land Before Time is mid AF and the only reason people remember it is for Littlefoot's mom dying.
Nah you're smoking crack. The first movie is a great roadtrip/adventure story, the sequels range from garbage to mediocre though. BUT if you really need some anti-LBT ragebait accuse people of only liking the movie for Ducky's VA dying, that'll ruffle feathers.

Balto came out in 1995 but yeah it is underrated due to Toys story and Lion King came out in 1993, the same year as Jurassic Park.

I couldn't remember the exact year for Balto so I guessed '94 since that was Lion King and Toy Story. Thanks for the clarification.

I think Cinderella 3 is pretty good too. The prince gets personality and jumps out a window, Anastasia has a fairly decent redemption arc, the stepmom is a bitch and the animation is impressive. There are few wierd story choices but overall a fun movie that's very different from the first one.

The first movie is a great roadtrip/adventure story,
I think my issue with it is, the characters are very simplistic. I guess that's the point, to make its message about prejudice come across clearer for the kids. But I'd argue they're too simplistic. Littlefoot is the typical optimistic one, Cera's the typical headstrong bully, Ducky is the typical cute oblivious one, Spike the dumb one, etc. It's....fine. Certainly better than any of the slop out nowadays. But definitely the weakest of of his 80s output.

So you're upset at the children's movie from the eighties for being an archetypal eighties children's movie.

Do u guys have suggestions for animated movies? I am a bit of a sleep-deprived parent who can't remember titles of animated films.
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs both 1 and 2 are good modern ones, CWACOM2 is one of my favorite movies, unironically. The cool thing with a lot of Dreamworks/Sony movies is they're inspired by books, so you guys can watch the movie AND rent the book from the library and do a whole little compare-and-contrast thing.

I'm not upset per se, more.....disappointed. To be completely fair though, the blame for that can be laid at Steven Spielberg who cut a huge chunk of the movie for being "too scary for kids".
"It's too scary. We'll have kids crying in the lobby, and a lot of angry parents. You don't want that"
And I suppose these were perfectly fine to show to kids, eh, Spielberg?

Spielberg begged the MPAA to make the PG-13 rating specifically for that reason though, there was only G, PG, R, and X prior to 1984 when PG-13 was introduced primarily due to the movie Gremlins doing exactly that and Spielberg and a couple other filmmakers throwing a fit over it. NC-17 didn't exist until 1990 either.

iirc Jaws was a big one on getting PG-13 a thing too?
and lol NC-17
I give no fucks about Terrifiers but the idea an unrated splat movie hit #1 at the box office will always make me happy that the MPAA is functionally dead

I remember it bc of the characters eating food. The treestar with all its water drops. Spike's first scene where he eats grass. Petri's siblings fighting over cherries. Etc. The tar pit scenes too. Brrrr.

Yeah, Jaws was what got Spielberg to start bitching but Gremlins was kinda the big watershed film that pushed things over the edge since the marketing for that film was slightly deceptive and lead a lot of parents to believe that the film was much less scary and intense than it actually was and so a lot of eight year olds accidentally got the fear of God put into them in that theater. There were a lot of directors and studios who had been begging for a while for an intermediate rating between PG and R for films that weren't made explicitly for adults but were a little too intense for children below their teenage years, hence PG-13 was finally born. IIRC Spielberg referred to it in his pitch to the MPAA as "A PG film with a little spice".

So I gauge you have a daughter, so that should probably factor in to what to recommend

Disney is pretty much the ultimate girl factory. You have a ton of great options, but the ones I have seen girls cling to are mainly the Princess films and a few random:
  • Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs
  • Cinderella
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Aladdin
  • Beauty & The Beast
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas (not Princess but very strong female following - might be scary though)
  • Lion King (not Princess, and you already mentioned, but still a classic)
  • Mulan
  • Tarzan (Not Princess, however, girls seem to like jungle man)
  • Princess & The Frog
  • Tangled
  • Frozen
  • Moana
Pixar is a company where you can pretty much select anything from its beginning to 2010, or in other words, till Toy Story 3. Though, the ones that are the best for kids are:
  • Toy Story 1,2,3
  • Monsters Inc & Monsters University
  • The Incredibles
  • Cars 1 and 3 (yeah, I know, but it is still very popular and seen as underrated now. Kids also love it)
  • Finding Nemo
  • Inside Out 1 & 2
  • Brave (decent, not great, Princess film)
Dreamworks is a mixed bag, especially for girls, but primary suggestions are:
  • Shrek 1,2, Forever After (3 is the only truly bad one, series concludes nicely with 4)
  • Puss in Boots The Last Wish
  • How to Train your Dragon trilogy
  • Kung Fu Panda trilogy
  • Madagascar trilogy
  • Rise of The Guardians (mid, but women go crazy for Jack Frost)
  • Over the Hedge
Warner Bros is odd as they don’t have much, but they still have a few things to suggest. A lot of it is DC, given you have a daughter, I am going to assume the only capeshit that might land will be Batman and the teen heroes, as those are the ones I see female fanbases centered around.
  • Scooby Doo Zombie Island (might be scary)
  • Scooby Doo The Witches Ghost
  • Scooby Doo Alien Invaders
  • Scooby Doo Cyber Chase
  • Scooby Doo meets Batman
  • Scooby Doo & Batman Brave & The Bold
  • Dexter’s Lab Ego Trip
  • PowerPuff Girls Movie
  • The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy Big Boogey Adventure
  • Batman Mask of The Phantasm
  • Batman vs Dracula (might be scary for her)
  • LEGO Batman
  • Batman Return of The Caped Crusader & vs Two Face
  • Teen Titans Trouble in Tokyo
  • The LEGO Movie

Illumination is bottom of the barrel, but it has its moments. Would mostly avoid but if you had to:
  • Despicable Me 1 & 2
  • The Super Mario Bros Movie
Nickelodeon is one that gets seldom mentioned, but does have some highlights:
  • The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie
  • Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius
  • Fairly Odd Parents Channel Chasers
  • Rugrats in Paris
  • Invader Zim Into the Florpus
  • Rango (bit intense/ inappropriate for kids)
  • Back at The Barnyard (not great but my sister loves this one)
