Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

So I recently rewatched Avatar because why the hell not, and I was suddenly struck with a question-

Do you guys think an Avatar could be the parent of the next Avatar? Like, say an Earth Kingdom Avatar falls in love with a Fire Nation guy. She ends up getting pregnant by him, but something goes wrong and she dies during delivery. I think there's a chance of it happening assuming her child is a firebender, albeit a super slim one.

That would actually be a really interesting idea for a series.
Let's assume it's a prequel, because fuck Korra and also natal medicine wouldn't be exactly great in the past. A kid is born to an extremely promising and beloved young Avatar but she dies during delivery. They search the world for her reincarnation and end up figuring out that her child, the one she died in order to give life to, is actually it! The kid would have to deal with the fact that they have to not only live up to the last Avatar, but to their own mother. Not to mention they'd inevitably get a fair bit of blame slung at them by people for "taking" their mother from the world before her time. You could get some cool scenes with the kid talking to their mother in the spirit world and a character arc of eventually coming to terms with the fact that what happened to their mom wasn't their fault. Maybe I'm just rambling, but I thought it could be interesting, at least in the right hands.

I'm glad Hazbin been greenlit. In an era of western cartoons where the artstyle ranges from bean mouths, reboots no one asked for, Rick and Morty or Family Guy clone its good to have a breath of fresh air. Not to drag Owl House as I actually like the show it reminds me way to much like Gravity Falls. I know people who worked GF worked on this but thats no excuse. Craig McCrackens shows art different from artstyle, writing, and especially humor.

That’s what gets to me. Ever since Korra concluded nearly six years ago, we’ve been getting the same lesbian couples and people (fans and staff) still hype it up like it’s still groundbreaking and provocative.

Every time they pull this dumb shit again I just think of the people doing it as disgusting Andrew Dobson type basement dwellers jerking it to their pedo fantasies while telling themselves they're "progressive" for doing it.

Hazbin is just ripping off DeviantArt. It’s the same exact artstyle everyone was using in the 2000s; it’s nothing unique or amazing.

I do like how Genndy and McCracken keep their shoes distinct from each other

I think it’s the ego that gets to me. I do still think Gravity Falls is one of the better cartoons to air in the modern era but Hirsch hasn’t done much in the four years it’s been off air; all his pitches failed, his scripts for movies were scrapped and the best he could do is voice roles in his girlfriend’s cartoon. Yet he still acts like this big shot who’s The Godfather of animation.

While the topic is still on Hirsch, it seems that he chimed in on the R&S reboot as well:

Never would have I imagined that I would miss the early 2010s.
I really fucking hate this idea that something that had a sick fuck involved in it or something that could be considered (insert)ist even if unintentional should be thrown in a basement and never touched again.

Also lol the reason the "diverse" crowd keeps parasiting existing franchises is their original ideas fail because the public hates wokeshit.

Come to think of it, Looney Tunes had a ton of problematic and un-PC content in them, including blackface and minstrel gags. Yet I didn’t hear anybody making a fuss over the new Looney Tunes revival airing on HBO Max. In fact, they were mocking people who complained about Elmer not using guns. They can’t even keep their logic for outrage consistent.

That's what it boils down to, right? "Progressive representation and groundbreaking diversity" = "I ran out of wank material and need more" 🚬

Along with what @OmnipotentStupidity said, it's greatly a right place right time thing. What I find amazing about it is the designs that complex were still animated 2D-style when normally one look at someone like Husker would make a 2D artist rethink their life choices. But that's only a technical thing, the writing in HH is balls. Helluva Boss is better but not by much.

That's because none of the Looney Tunes creators were pedos. Of course, it's a disservice to the other, non-pedo people involved in R&S... but none of them were asked to begin with.

Insert smart jab, “That we know of.” Joking aside, this itself presents another rub; the pedo everyone is angry with isn’t even involved with the reboot. Unless the new people somehow turn out to be pedophiles, there really is no reason for people to get this worked up over Ren and Stimpy getting rebooted.
It really just feels like they’re only going “It’s because the creator is a pedo” to have the moral high ground over this one reboot. If these people really cared about pedos in the industry, where were the people railing against Julia Vickerman?

Got around to watching some animated capeshit - Justice League Dark: Apokoilips. I was not expecting it to be that dark or bittersweet. Over past few years I might watch the odd DC animated movie once in a while, and they were generally entertaining, far better than the live action stuff. This was meant to be the last one in that shared universe and they don't pull any punches. Characters die left and right, things go to absolute shit...yeah, would recommend, but only after watching a few of the other animated films to get to know the characters.

Even went back and watched a few of those old Batman/Superman animated shows from the 90's for nostalgia sake. The ones I watched as a kid. They hold up much better than a lot of modern animation shows. Even get some nice themes or throw away lines that you would only get if you were older. If I had kids and was given the choice of having them watch that or shit like Stephen Universe, go with the 90's show all the way.

Got around to it a bit late, but I did like this #bettercartoon suggestion:
Something with detail

Otherwise, I'll just share my pitch:
"Shockwave in an action-comedy about (insert furry MC here) and their adventures with (insert culture here), they get into all kinds of LPBJ+-X comedy, but nothing offensive. This show is all about tolerance and exploring who MC is, and their struggling relationship with MC2."

They all have that same Buckley clip-art look, the same weird glowing colors, and the same story. We complain that "all anime looks the same", then we turn around and do this. I'm just waiting for the upcoming Pluto anime, after that I'm done with animation, doesn't matter if its East or West. Virtually all the individuality and artistry has been zapped away from both of them.

Heres a blog post about gamers, but if you change "gamer" to "artist" it easily applies here. Compare any of these #bettercartoon entries to any one of Mike Judges cartoons and you'll get the picture.

I wonder if we should make a separate thread for them all so we don't crowd this one?
That wouldnt be a bad idea.

anyone tired of the eye-bleeding color palate modern cartoon uses like pastel mixed with oversaturated colors
A lot of indie comics use that palette too, and I'm not a big fan of it. Its a bit like Hollywood and their fascination with making everything blue and orange.

I do agree with you. However, knowing what the creator of 12 Forever was like, I cannot look at it the same as before.

Wait what? He supposedly lusted at Lauren Faust. Can you fill me in on that story, sound interesting.
Lauren Faust did a 4chan AMA and someone asked her how was being with Hirsch, joking or not she responded with this:

Alex himself admitted that Dipper's crush for Wendy was based on the crush he had/has for Lauren.

edit actually quoting Saxxon and the image shows up perfectly fine in the quoted text. Weird.

Also found a Twitter cap of her apparently taunting him over his obsession.

Given that the production halted after the animation company folded and Netflix was apathetic towards the show since day one, I don’t think people will be looking at Twelve Forever period.

Oh god it’s actually real. I heard the rumors before but I never proof of it.
Makes me wonder what else is real...and what might come back to bite him in the ass.
