Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Yeah, it was just a simple fairly bland comic about teenagers. I used to read it all the time as a kid, but sometime in the past few years they decided they wanted to be more “realistic” and “dramatic”. And Riverdale is like the extreme bastardization of that.
Damn, I use to spend my allowance on the digests. Sure, it wasn't the most riveting, but it was good for a few laughs.

This is going to suck. There's really no way you can make anything about this work. What about the cartoon can you replicate in live action?

Are we going to get live-action actresses made to look like bug-eyed, no-fingered freaks?
Given how cheap CW shows can be, I’m pretty sure they’ll just hire regular looking actresses to play the girls.
Doubly so if they go full Riverdale and make it “hotter and sexier”. I winced so hard typing that.

And considering the effects work on titles like Supergirl look like complete ass, assuming they do attempt any kind of VFX, it's most certainly going to flounder pretty badly.

Makes me wonder if they're even attempt any of the non-human enemies like Him or Fuzzy.

Scooby-Doo Co-Creator Joe Ruby Dies at 87

And half of Ruby-Spears, which produced such all-time classics as Mister T, Chuck Norris Karate Kommandos, Saturday Supercade, Lazer Tag Academy, Rubik the Amazing Cube, Rickety Rocket... and I guess Thundarr the Barbarian as well. (There's a funny story about Goldie Gold and Action Jack though.)

Not trying to speak ill of the dead, of course. After all, it was at his studio that Jack Kirby and Steve Gerber first got a job with health insurance.

EDIT: In other news, Son of the White Mare is out... virtually, of course. I don't know if I really approve of this. This film looks like you should see it in theaters and not on your computer. I hope the BluRay comes out soon, though.

Rewatching the episode autumn leaves of Rugrats because it was from when my earliest memory goes back and I just realized the leaf remover vacuum Stu invented actually works. The one time his invention could actually put "pickles toys on the map." And the only reason he thought it didn't was because the kids kept opening the bag the leaves were in.

They still do print digests for supermarkets and places that sell stuff like tabloids and sudoku/crossword books and they are still in the classic Archie style.

2. Despite having a ridiculous name Baron bon hecklehoffer still makes me feel like I'm afraid to turn around feeling like there's someone behind be just like when I hadn't hit the permanent age double digits. Maybe it's cause I grew up with the haunted mask cover of goosebumps staring at me or the laughing ghosts from Scooby Doo but theres something about a green face, red eyes and heavy blacks that just gives me the creeps even when they try to make him look goofy or friendly towards the end it just...look at him
If it makes you feel better one of the cows on this site would see a character designed like that and immediately want to fuck it.

Things seem to finally be turning around; we’re getting animated fantasy that doesn’t suck shit!

This first one is actually really old news so feel free to rate me late on this one; Jeff Smith’s Bone is finally getting a long awaited adaptation, with traditional 2D animation to boot. Smith will be in charge and the it’s currently aiming for a 2021/2022 date on Netflix:

Hopefully this one hasn’t been covered yet; Jorge Gutierrez, creator of El Tigre and the Book of Life, is currently creating a Mesoamerican fantasy limited series for Netflix, also aiming for 2021, titles “Maya and the Three”:

After seeing what passes for fantasy in animated shows nowadays, I really welcome something LotR-esque.

The article you posted was mostly on how they have a strong female protagonist and latinxxx writers. Its not exactly the most confidence building article you could have found on it.

The Oblongs seems timely to watch for some reason.
Or maybe it’s because of Creepy Susie
I think The Oblongs is more well known than the Creepy Susie book it spun off from. The 2000s was a strange era for animation.

Point taken, guess I should have looked through the article more closely. Here’s an article that’s less pandering:
It really is a shame that people have to suck dick on the diversity angle nowadays. There are so many cultures that could be spun into a fantasy epic and there’s so much untapped potential in Mesoamerican myths. That alone should get people excited.

There's another Mesoamerican fantasy series coming out sometime this year (hopefully, the coof's been a bitch) called Onyx Equinox that's about an Aztec boy who is saved from death by the gods and appointed to be humanity's champion. It was created by an actual Mexican lady, too! It looks dark in the same vein as the Castlevania show, and has an anime flair to its art style. I'm pretty excited for it, in all honesty.

This is a real nice find; looks dark and mysterious and has a slight Avatar look to it but not in a way that feels derivative. It’s already made a good first impression for me with just a few images and a synopsis, can’t wait to see more from this.

Interesting to note that this is coming from Crunchyroll; seems they were able to find original content more audiences would enjoy.

I want to be extremely optimistic about Bone. Jeff's turned down movie deals in the past when they wanted to focus on the cow race or add in a pop song, so the fact that he's in charge has me interested.

I heard about Maya and the Three on twitter awhile ago, might be good. The pandering article might just be because that's the kind of thing that gets buzz nowadays, but Jorge Gutierrez does good stuff. I enjoyed Book of Life and his dorky yet enthusiastic commentary.

Onyx Equinox looks pretty cool too. Also surprised this is Crunchyroll after the High Guardian Spice ordeal.

Didn't know where else to post this I Know a castlevania the series thread was started a while back but it seems buried and a Necro thread now and while it's very anime esq it's still a Western cartoon made by a Western studio (the same one that made fairly odd parents and Danny phantom no less) so I'm gonna post here... anyways.

I'm up to S2 E3 and I gotta say I like what I'm seeing so far. I've only played the original games for the nintendo consoles and parts of lament of innocence and sotn so the changes I've read about like making this character black and a few gay/bi isn't bothering me much. I'm just glad Netflix put actual money into an adult animation that's not a comedy drama like bojack or tucca and Bertie and isn't animated in toon boom. Seriously if I didn't know frederator was behind this I swear it was animated by titmouse...back when they still did good shows like boondocks or Black dynamite or it was done by Funimation.

A few corrections. First of all, Danny Phantom wasn’t made by Frederator. Second of all, Funimation isn’t an animation studio, it’s a licensing company.

Castlevania is very schlocky, but for the life of me I can't get enough of it. Hopefully they move on from C3 soon though.
