Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

@Autumnal Equinox Got my curious to rewatch tiny toons how I spent my summer vacation. It definitely brought back memories even if some of the Jokes are dated (Rosanne Barr being fat and singing the national anthem badly really all the celeb jokes on tiny toons and animaniacs are products of their time it's not just a problem of the reboot)

I remember nickelodeon would Air the special every summer and again labor day weekend, yeah for a while nick had the Rights to air tiny toons animaniacs and even old school looney tunes. A holdover from when warner owned them. Even after the Viacom buyout the distribution deal lasted as late as 98 or so before moving to cartoon network. ... Yeah guess with the labor day weekend coming up in waxing nostalgic. Miss the way networks would have summer themes and all before switching to back to school, then fall Halloween, the holidays.

I was probably too amused by people talking about how the Animaniacs reboot was instantly dated - as if the original show wasn't dated, and as if the old WB shorts from the 40s weren't instantly dated either.

On that note, how many of you remember what Nick did to the Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs themes?

Speaking of dates concepts for animation, the fairly odd parents episode information stupor highway. Even the name is dated who the hell uses information super highway to refer to the internet anymore?

But yeah the entire plot is about Timmy recovering an email he wasn't intending to send, there's no mention of any features the net is known for today.. because none of them existed at the time, video streaming, social media it really is a callback to those awkward early days of the internet going mainstream.

Also there's a joke that is a little awkward to watch now in hindsight...Timmy's day seems to fawn over an underage girl... yeahhhh given what's come to light regarding people who worked at nick at time now...it almost feels like the joke was either written by one of the pervs working at nick or it was someone's way of trying to dog whistle about it.

Apparently the Super Mario animated movie coming out next year will be directed by the Teen Titans Go! creators.

And the salt is already flowing:

Personally, I'm leaning towards the latter, what do you guys think?

Things get dated a lot faster now.
Especially when a lot of newer shows reference memes with have a very short lifespan.
Imo, if your work is strongly written and produced, people are willing to overlook the more dates elements and enjoy timelessly; yeah you might not get that reference to Jimmy Durante or Peter Lorre in a Looney Tunes cartoon but does it matter when the rest of the cartoon is so funny? For a good comparison, look at how well the original PPG aged vs how well the reboot aged.

Yeah the top of are kind of spergy but the bottom half make some really shit arguments.
“It’ll make a corporation millions and it kids will gobble it up so anything you say is pointless”-The fuck kind of corpo shit is this? And the one guy kind of comes off as a man child.

A better argument would simply to wait and see how the film turns out before judging; some people can surprise you even considering past work. I mean, I’m willing to be cautiously optimistic over the Voltron showrunners working on Spider-Man movies, despite the sperg outs that caused.

That wasn't a matter of references, though, that was a matter of quality. The reboot stank from the beginning.

Oh true, no argument there. In fact, I’d argue that the references only stick outside so badly because there was no good writing to fall back on.
Compare this to the original, which had so many genuinely good, memorable moments that you forget things like characters playing LoZ on the N64 or showing off the “new” Sacajawea coin.

"You just killed your own fairy."

Funny thing about that scene, apparently it was inspired by the OG crew wasting production time playing Ocarina of Time to the point of pissing off Genndy Tartakovsky.

I think it could go either way for three reasons.

1. Creators only have as much power as their budgets and higher-ups give them. Being a creator in the industry could make you the lifeblood of the project (PPG) or just the idea guys laying the groundwork to build upon (ATLA). Or it could be a mix of both (Star Wars). The TTG guys are only a fraction of a bigger picture that needs to be painted here. I say fuck those guys, keep an eye out for who's writing this thing.

2. Creators who want to perfect their craft (and have the money to indulge this) always try to do different things from project to project. Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky, Matt Groening and yes even Seth McFarlane have all done similar yet different things with each project they made. Maybe the TTG guys are the same and this is their chance?

3. Nintendo themselves are overseeing this. The last time they were this closely involved in a project was the Kirby anime on FoxBox/4Kids and both the sub and dub were accurate and good. If Nintendo isn't happy with Illumination inserting fart jokes and singing about fucking waffles or something, they'll can this thing faster than you can say mama-mia. Nintendo will be dammed if some dumbass americans ruin their shot at ridding the shame of the first Mario movie because Yoshi twerking was crucial to the plot or something.

Whatever though, my oldest nephew adores the Mario Kart games and is excited for it. We'll see. 🚬

I'm bit a biased here because I don't think Teen Titans Go is as bad as people make it out to be, but I'm not too worried. They've shown they can change up styles when they really want to and not just do fart jokes. Plus this is Nintendo we're talking about and we all know how autistic they are about protecting their shit. They're not gonna let any of the people working on this just add whatever they want.

I'm still expecting cringe though because this is a video game movie and we've seen how those pan out.

Wasn't the TTG movie surprisingly good? I'd say this bodes well for the Mario movie more than anything.

Fourth SpongeBob SquarePants movie in production confirms Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Nickelodeon

At 2:27, Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Nickelodeon essentially confirms that a fourth SpongeBob SquarePants movie is in production. Presumably this is very early however given that it is so soon after the previous one.

They're gonna keep SpongeBob running until I'm 50, I swear to God. *sigh*

To play devils advocate, most of TTG’s fanbase don’t even like the original Teen Titans and probably young adults that follow Nintendo’s every word as if it is gold. If it is going to be like the original American versions of Super Mario Bros. cartoons from the 90’s, then maybe it will be more tolerable than the live action movie version.

For those who thought it couldn't get any lower than Hanna-Barbera, think again...

God forbid if they sexualized the Dino and make the children have pronouns while having the Flinstones as old parents.
