That's generally cartoon tradition... of course, I thought it was a bad thing - as did the rest of you, I assume - when they didn't do it for the PPG reboot. In hindsight the original actresses probably dodged a bullet, but it was still not good. That's probably the beautiful thing about voice acting is that old voice actors are able to voice their known characters until they die. I still love how June Foray was able to reprise her role as Granny in the Loony Tunes show.
Also I didn't mean to say the voice acting field is growing as a bad thing. It's a defintly good thing! Hell you got people like David Tennet who seems to be doing more voice over stuff as time goes on.
Also that reminds me at some point I would really love to do a post on here discussing a bunch of old cartoons I found form the 90s that star a bunch of great voice actors.
Generally it's not a good thing to ignore that tradition. Remember in the Jetsons movie, how they had Janet Waldo replaced by Tiffany even though she had recorded most of her dialogue? It was so embarrassing that Joe Barbera went so far as to apologize for it at Don Messick's retirement party.
Thankfully, however, most people give a damn about tradition. Disney's got the same actors playing its star characters, and you hear the same people in the Scooby-Doo stuff... of course, it's anyone's guess who'll be playing who in a new Looney Tunes thing but that's fine.
(Do the post discussing the cartoons. You don't have to wait.)
