If the thread is about making fun of a specific group and there's one commenter who's contantly subtly redirecting the focus onto a specific subset of that group.
Like, imagine you're in a thread about people who play with their own shit, and some guy says "Wow, this guy's got to be the worst. At least some of them wash their hands after, but he's just going out into public getting his shit germs all over everything!"

Seems normal enough. He's just highlighting the fact that the subject is especially bad by even shit-player standards, right? But then later you see another post by him, and again, he's all "Yeah these ones are pretty bad, but it could be worse, at least they wash their hands after!" and you notice he tends to bring up the non-hand-washer(s) specifically pretty often.

Hey, whatever, maybe he's a germaphobe, maybe he's just fixated on the standout example that's so bad it impacts people beside the cow. But you start to notice, it really isn't a fixation on the bad example, not directly. It's really more about emphasising how the hand-washers aren't as bad, and something about the whole situation starts smelling funny...
Look, I'm all for nuance on here, but sometimes it becomes clear when someone's just trying to find a path of least resistance to getting people to agree that there's an "acceptable" version of whatever shit they're into, that there are good/normal ones by virtue of there being worse examples, so that they don't feel like their cool internet friends are mocking them.
