Well, I was pretty disappointed in it to. I felt that it was a huge waste of a setting, was so disappointed I read the novelization out of vain hopes it would expand the world in a meaningful way and then it sucked even harder. Far Cry 4 was the same, it had this really interesting family story that sounded like something from old Medieval legends woven into a Third World narcostate setting, and it was totally squandered being hidden in the form of little letters while the main story was basically some queer in a pink suit occasionally calling you to spout off lolsorandom stuff.I wasn't expecting something good. I was expecting something stupid and inoffensive that would let me shoot at bad guys for a few hours. What I got was something that was too stupid to realize how stupid it was and offensive to my sensibilites as a person with a working frontal lobe where instead of shooting at bad guys I was forced to listen to the proselytizing of a bunch of inbred waco rejects in between completing major milestones.
I felt like in the quest to be non-political, they actually did screw up by making the cult completely boring and lacking in personality. I don't think the cult even uses the word "God." They have no real culture, ideology, or theology besides just loldrugs and survivalism with a cross smeared on it. I mean, shit, even that could have been done better since the county's whole personality was being survivalist, it could have had some notion of individual responsibility versus collective safety built into its narrative. They could have had a real mind-fuck (instead of that lame nukes-fall-everyone-dies ending) if it turned out part of the way in that you get brainwashed into the cult and then the rest of the game is conquering the county for the cult, with the collectivism and lack of degeneracy being part of how you win.Shut your whore mouth, sinner. "Keep Your Rifle By Your Side" trumps any flaws it may have.
Nor did I get any fart-huffing vibes from it. It left me wanting more redneck wars. My biggest complaint with FC5 is that the Resistance points forced the story to progress too quickly, and that you can't go half a mile in any direction without getting in a drive-by with Peggies.
Bit of a shame, because the, like, two different sermons you hear on the radios are hilarious because they sound 100% like something a preacher in a Baptist church would preach. There could have been themes about how their social conservatism attracts people who are alienated from modern society (both capitalistic and degenerate) and the discipline their religion gives makes them fanatical. If you look up real life cults like Vissarion in Russia or the Nation of Islam, you get big vibes like that.
There's three ways I could have seen playing a cult off that would have all had a lot more cover and something to think about. I say something to think about, I mean like how Bioshock was in some sense "about" Objectivism. One way would have been to play into Current Year and have them be the evil White Identity types the journalists thought they would. Another would have been to do the exact opposite and reference People's Temple and that one Black group down in Arizona, having them be communistic progressive libshits and playing the contrast against the locals.
Since both of those would have caused massive outrage among half the population, the third way would have been goofy hippie pseudo-Oriental New Age woo and alien cult stuff, and then play it off like hippies vs cowboys.
And I guess a fourth option is just playing them off like Not-Mormons, which would be the closest to what the bunch seemed to be anyways aesthetically, which would offend the Mormons, but nobody cares about the Mormons except the Mormons.
The thing about the map being too chaotic was what ruined the hunting and fishing for me, there's always gunfire rattling around you.
