FFS, can we please just have ONE cartoon without this art style?
Spoiler: New Thundercats
I am really tired of seeing nearly every post-Adventure Time cartoon using this art style, though at least this one doesn't have full-on noodle arms. I remember when I was growing up that when I tuned in to watch cartoons every show looked different, even on the same channel. Whatever happened to variety, don't kids today like variety?
This whole decade's been nothing but dissapointment once Adventure Time showed the world this approach. Nobody really has a style that differs from each other much anymore.I am really tired of seeing nearly every post-Adventure Time cartoon using this art style, though at least this one doesn't have full-on noodle arms. I’d say it’s like the Klasky-Csupo style. Except instead of it being a style of a single studio, everybody is just doing uglier, and uglier imitations.Takes me back to high school when everyone wanted to be anime, except these are professionals! My only guess for todays homogenized cartoon style is that its efficient to work with, its cheap and easy.
Then again toons like Bullwinkle and Yogi Bear were fast and cheap to make, and they looked better too, theres plenty of other examples too I'm sure.
Just for the heck of it, heres an inactive blog dedicated to animation errors in SU, plenty of paint bucket and layer errors: https://animationerrorsofstevenuniverse.tumblr.com/
I think as kids, we all wanted to be anime as it was something different. Now that we have it already (and also matured) we can see why that's not always a good idea.Takes me back to high school when everyone wanted to be anime, except these are professionals!
Just comes off sad to me.My only guess for todays homogenized cartoon style is that its efficient to work with, its cheap and easy.
Probably helped those designers were true pros of their day. A few of my personal faves include Ed Benedict, Ernest Pintoff and Tom Oreb. They knew how to work within the limitations of their day, no doubt a product that the UPA studios pioneered that later became a crutch for TV production. Then again toons like Bullwinkle and Yogi Bear were fast and cheap to make, and they looked better too, theres plenty of other examples too I'm sure.
Someone has to remind us why these things still keep happening!Just for the heck of it, heres an inactive blog dedicated to animation errors in SU, plenty of paint bucket and layer errors: https://animationerrorsofstevenuniverse.tumblr.com/
And that's what puts me in a bad depressive mood. It's almost like it's dangerous to deviant from what works.I’d say it’s like the Klasky-Csupo style. Except instead of it being a style of a single studio, everybody is just doing uglier, and uglier imitations.

Seen it on Twitter. Seems like yet another cheap attempt to follow the Teen Titans Go cancer.
The "moe" stuff was when I tuned out. I was not interested in these sorts of programs. I was in it for the action, vehicular and robot designs and whatever crazy antics they cooked up.Pretty much, in my school it was Shonen Jump stuff that was big at least, before everything became moe high school crap.
I wouldn't doubt this at all. I never thought about that dark age during my childhood but I could see how this must've shaped the way people perceived animation as a "Kid's Medium" due to that negativity and limited access for anything outside the mainstream to be seen.I think we're entering a new animation dark age (if we havent already), much like Hollywoods constant reboots.
I do wonder that as well. Is it just lazy, incompetence or has the lower budgets made it so?I'm just curious if theres any legit reason for so todays samey art styles, something more legit than cold practicality.
In all fairness, it was 1979 when they started the series, too many giant robot anime of the time had no real thought put into their designs until the "real robot" shows of the 80's happened. Robots in the 70's weren't technically probable.I started watching ye olde Gundam anime to help pass time.
Clearly the artists for the Zeon mobile suits were drunk.

I have no idea how that single eye camera is supposed to work if it can only look in one direction. It wasn't until much later in the series that Zeon got MS with full 360 degree optics.
It's a shame when they can't commit to half-hour adventures anymore. That is real weak.Seen it on Twitter. Seems like yet another cheap attempt to follow the Teen Titans Go cancer.
In other news, I also heard the new TMNT (that changes everything, from turtle designs, type of turtles, who is the leader, and most of their behaviour). Will also follow the classic "ultra kiddy cartoon schedule" of 2 small 11 minute episodes per session.
RIP TMNT franchise...
My guess is that all the animators these days are good friends with each other and copy paste the same styles they all use. Kind of like some sort of art style circle jerk. It also seems the animation industry these days is run by millenials now. I could be wrong though.Pretty much, in my school it was Shonen Jump stuff that was big at least, before everything became moe high school crap.

On topic Cheetara looks like she went full Tumblrina, and I feel that her new outfit was made because Tumblr hates sexualized female characters.

Certainly ruins individuality.Everyone being too friendly to each other and likely copying each other as a result == why things are in such dire straits.
It's pretty telling how it crept in like that. I'm sure it's a generational thing.Same here, it felt like Japan became more obsessed with its otaku culture as time went on.
Probably why the whole 'CalArts Style' got flaunted around.I believe thats true to an extent, many of them went to the same schools too.
Which is a shame if it's being used more like a crutch.Another reason could be that quite a bit of cartoons on TV use Toonboom (which works similar to Flash), and they're sticking to a look that works well in that program.
Even if 900+ people are giving them money somehow. In the world of videogames I will always insist that LoL has some of the most dead-looking women I've ever seen in a game:
No surprise that the artist has a patreon (despite employment), dont worry, their art still sucks.![]()

I miss it everyday. It'll be rough to try bringing it back.I miss the days when people and animals in cartoons actually look like people and animals, and not sentient jellybeans![]()
As discussed in the John K thread I think you need to have a certain level of :autism: to want to work in the animation industry.I think I'm a bit late for the party but here's a Behind the scene of Thundercats Roar
notice his hair? why does businesses keep on hiring these clowns?
