I really don't know what kids were thinking when they voted for these things, because they're not very pleasant to look at. The random angular designs clash pretty badly with the organic shapes of...whatever these things are. The one on the left looks like it was meant to be a cat but the designer was told an ordinary cat is boring so it needs to be XTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEME looking. The one on the right meanwhile came from an order to make a living embodiment of cherry flowers...but XTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEME so they made up a generic thingy with flower petal designs on the head.

Out of the two though the one on the right is slightly better, if only because cherry trees/flowers are actually something strongly associated with Japan, while the other one is just a featureless cat wearing a checkerboard mask and suit.

The fact kids voted for this make me think of that moment from The Simpsons again. It pretty much explains what I feel has happened here.

Since nobody's mentioned them yet Vancouver's Pedobear-esque are lifeless and pretty terrible too (in my opinion):

The overall impression I get from this group is that they couldn't decide on any one thing so they threw a bunch of random shit together to see what would stick.

Mukmuk is an intresting one because he really ins't an olympic mascot. He got shafted by the olympic commitee and kind of exists in limbo. Also, people only give a shit about him because he's "supposed" to be some endagered marmot.

Meicrackmon (yes, that's the official name) Vicious Mode's design doesn't make sense to me, particularly the scorpion-like tail going on there (never once used in combat btw) and just how unnecessary the Wolverine-esque claws are. The DNA scarf extensions that carried over from the Meicoomon design also doesn't really do it favors, like the Digimon jumps around a lot, so it's inconvenient.

Also lol furry boobs.

And we've yet to see it in action, but this is Omnimon's Mercy Mode.

To sell toys. That's really about it, tbh, although I imagine it's also because it's easier to animate (for simple designs, anyway). This is Toei Animation we're talking about, after all.

Its the wings that kill the design for me, they just seem so tacked on, not helping that they replace his cape, which is what brings the design together in my opinion.

Seriously, its so easy to like Vucko because he's got such strong, simple design elements. With the busy, poorly designed ones you can't even tell whats going on in a static pose, but if you start with strong design even in action things are clear.

What do Hodori and Vucko have in common? Strong, crisp outlines and a limited palette of color and pattern. You can immediately tell at first glance what they are, what they are doing, and what they represent. Among the bad designs we see in this thread, ignoring two or all three guidelines (outline, color, pattern) is pretty universal.

There is no way that they've already run out of animal mascots in Japan. There can't be. This are the culture that have mascots for police precincts! You think they could manage better than this!

Actually, they are pretty hit and miss with their police mascots. I'll take a closer look and maybe do a whole post on them.

The real creature could be as thin as an anorexic snake, The armor makes up for the limp noodle body.
