What are you playing right now?

Still playing the Insomniac Spider-Man PC port. When I'm not playing that I am playing Regiments which is a pretty good RTS set in a cold war gone hot scenario. I got back into the Destroy All Humans remake because of the release of the second games remake which I bought. Both are good and I recommend them. I kind of got burned out on MGS5 because I took to playing it a lot again.

Undernauts - Labyrinth of Yomi

It's a great, horror-based dungeon crawler.

Really feels like an old school Megaten game, tonally without the demon fusion.

At the suggestion of some folks here, I've been trying out KeeperRL. It's fun, mostly, except for the fact that I get killed a lot and the early game is a real grind.

Been playing through Ass Creed 4 again after beating 3. I still think it's great, but weep that instead of more great pirate action games Ubi took this game's success and decided to make a faggot fucking terminally online microtransaction filled piece of junk with no swashbuckling. I'm hoping once the samurai trend in gaming is over we'll get a pirate trend.

Project Outfox, specifically the ddr/stepmania mode of it. I used to be a super amazing at ddr back when I was a teen. I kinda got back into it a few months ago and played on keyboard until recently I finally found my old dancepad. It's fun as fuck.

Forza Horizon 4. I wanted to get FH3 but I couldn't find a key for the game with its DLCs since apparently Microsoft delisted the game a couple of years ago. So far it's pretty good but I still miss the comfy setting of the third one.

I’ve been playing Dirge of Cerberus. It’s ok. Not absolutely awful, but the gameplay is repetitive. It’s an alright sequel to FF7. Not bad but not really good.

EDF 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair. Stupid name and retarded online players aside, defending our mother Earth from any alien attack is extremely fun thanks to the sheer number of Ayys and the crazy weaponry (you can have 4 miniguns on your person if you so desire, and one of the weapons is a literal Genocide Gun that wipes half the map), that and I want to mess around in 4.1 and 5 before I go on to 6 when it's finally translated and not a Playstation exclusive for the Japanese.
Also the Walking Fortress Balam and the Gigantic Unloader Barga are bigass mechs the size of skyscrapers, used to brutalize kaiju scum in 4.1 and 5 respectively, which gives me the happy chemical.

Decided to install Cult of the Lamb for the first time, and reinstalled the PC remaster of Sunset Overdrive to give it a play through in 4k.

Recently I've been playing through this massive catalog of free games from Epic. Some of them are great some are expectedly dogshit. Decided to try Salt and Sanctuary, never heard of it before and reviewers say it's 2D dark souls. Well, it's pretty basic but it's actually kind of fun. It's no Elden Ring, but it's a fun enough little game that I'll probably try to at least beat it. It's really making me want to do another ER playthrough, but I'm going to try and finish it.

Playing through Phoenix Point for the first-ish time. I had originally tried it out on release and found it to be just very "off" in ways. After some time with updates and DLC, it seems like it's gotten better, though it's a bit of a mixed bag of ideas and gameplay. There's some things that I think are very good and Firaxis should keep in mind (like the Action Point system letting you vary your moves rather than just move, then shoot), but also some stuff that really throws me off (like stepping out of full cover to shoot and then just standing there exposed when the enemy returns fire, or how weapons, especially heavy ones, struggle to aim down over rooftop cover). Some of the DLCs seem more like punishments you should put off as long as possible (Behemoth, corruption), which makes their inclusion feel a bit disjointed. XCOM 2's War of the Chosen integrates the previous DLC with an option at the start of the campaign, and something like that would probably benefit PF. Actually, that's probably the biggest weakness of Phoenix Point: it makes me just want to go back and play some more XCOM 2.

I put off S&S for a long time because of the visuals, but was pleasantly surprised the further I got in it. Once you get into the more dark and otherworldly locations, the gameplay and aesthetic feel like they improve quite a bit. I should probably go back and play another run with that big overhaul mod, can't remember the name.

Yea, I just got into Hager's Cavern other than the bastard wankhole fucker teleporting skeletons, it looks really nice. The sound design with the dripping water and cavern echoes really makes it feel kind of creepy. I'm enjoying it, it's pretty challenging but not insanely hard. The thing I dislike the most is some of the enemies are really cheap like the skeletons and some xenomorph looking thing, I forget what it's called. The skeletons especially just TP to either side of you and then stunlock you between them. You have to be really fast on the roll out or eat shit.

Chivalry 2 (really enjoying it more than Mordhau) and Destroy all Humans 2.

zombie army 4, even if it's a rebellion game and they sucked timmy tencent's cock for a year. least bought it on sale. can't complain much for the 11 bucks I paid for it (60 hours in and still stuff to do).

word of warning tho, they even wokefied a silly l4d clone with nazi zombies, what else to expect from britbongs. first season pass doubles down on it but it's not the only problem it has, least it's free now...

Well beat Salt and Sanctuary, but somehow without even looking up a guide I ended up chancing into easy mode by going greathammer build. So I decided to start fresh and try something a little more challenging. Picked a cleric and think I'm going to build it wisdom heavy and main reapers. It made killing the bullshit Cthulhu boss easy mode though, I didn't even know you could kill him. This game is pretty fun.

Decided to start playing through the Star Ocean series. Finished the SNES version of 1 over the weekend and it was pretty good, though nothing too special. Still working though 2 and it's pretty much just a better version of 1, though you can still get stunlocked to death in combat which is a bit lame.

The skill/specialty system is nice, though it's a bit too reliant on RNG and save scumming. The skill that lowers the cost of buying other skills is incredibly lame and is basically just a skill point tax that lets you start leveling your character's skills.

Got nostalgic over the King's Field games and went back to play King's Field 3 (American 2). Great game all around I feel. Can't wait to replay King's Field: The Ancient City. That game was a gem.

I’ve been playing The Order 1886 on the PS4. It’s a pretty good looking game, especially for a game from 2015 but it achieves this by having two massive black bars top and bottom of the screen. As a result the game’s actual resolution is much lower than 1080p. The levels are also fairly small and are basically just corridors leading to a shooting arena, and there’s a shit ton of disguised load sections. In fact I’m not convinced half of the level isn’t just to load assets.

It’s interesting to see just how far we’ve come with the PS4 hardwear. There are games that look as good if not better than The Order but don’t have to make concessions to resolution, have much larger levels with less loading or are just better at hiding them. It’s still a very pretty game but it’s no Uncharted.

The game play is your standard 3rd person cover based shooter with some extremely light platforming. The cover system is nothing to write home about, you press a circle and the player character “snaps” behind the nearest conveniently placed box or low wall. The same can be said for the shooting, it’s compantent but it’s basic. You have a Red Dead Redemption style “deadeye” like ability that can be used with the pistols. The problem with this mechanic (and this is probably the biggest complaint about the game in general) is that it’s on rails, you don’t get to manually aim the gun, just snap between targets and press the fire button. The melee and hip fire options are completely useless because you’ll just get killed immediately. There’s a lot of QTE’s but I feel like the game got a bad rap from the media at the time for them. Yes they are there but they aren’t that intrusive to the shooting sections which are the meat and potatoes of the game play. You get a second chance once downed by drinking the holy water you carry around which involves going through a QTE event but there’s not really a reason to use it, the only times I died was from being overwhelmed which usually ended in getting killed while down or from running ahead from cover. The automatic quick save is generous enough to make death not that important anyway.

The weapons are split between “science” and normal guns, the normal guns are your basic auto rifles, pistols, shotguns, etc, they feel good to use but that's about it. The science weapons fit the steampunk atheistic to a tee, with guns that shoot electricity or have special secondary fire types, the biggest problem is how underutilized they are. I played the game on normal and it was pretty rare to see them in a level, the only time they show up is when the devs strategically place them or are just outright given them for story reasons.

Speaking of underutilized, the enemies. The game starts with you hunting down werewolves but very quickly abandons them for human enemies. I can understand why this happened, the 3rd person cover shooter doesn't really work well with the mobile werewolves. I feel like the monsters were mostly cut from the game but how they ended up implementing in the game is very lazy. They exist exclusively in the on rails sections where the only interaction you get with them is through QTE’s or designated monster combat arenas. I think the idea behind these combat arenas is for you to move through the arena dodging the monsters as they jump out from behind concealment but it’s just easier to back up into a corner and mag dump the werewolves as they run in a straight line to you. You do have to finish them off with a melee attack which I think is supposed to force you to break cover or move around, but it’s easy to down them close to you and I was never attacked by more than two at a time which made them vere easy to deal with. Maybe they are more formidable on higher difficulty settings but normal is a cakewalk.

The human enemies come in four flavors. Normal enemies have auto rifles, smg’s, pistols and grenades and they are mostly static behind cover. Shotgunners have some armor and a very lethal shotgun, they bum rush you while under covering fire from the normal enemies. Special enemies have science weapons, mostly the grenade launcher and thermite gun from what I experienced. They are heavily armored and have some mobility around the combat arena and exist to make you break cover. The Snipers are barely in the game, mostly from how confined most of the shooting sections are but when they do show up they can be a pain to deal with. The issue is that you have to break cover to shoot at them but the moment you do you get shot, it’s not a one shot kill so the best way I found to deal with them is to let them shoot me, drop behind cover to regen my health, rinse and repeat till the sniper needs to reload, them shoot him.

The story is another one of those missed opportunities. It’s an alternate universe steampunk Earth with monsters and super science but it’s barely explored or explained. The main characters are all hundreds of years old because of the holy water they drink but if you weren't paying attention to a handful of lines of dialog you wouldn’t know. The only monsters you fight are the werewolves until vampires show up out of nowhere. There’s an obvious betrayal towards the end but I don’t really understand why it happened. Your friend turns out to be a vampire but I don’t know he’d become one, he’s already nearly immortal so what would be the point in turning into a vampire. It’s possible that the game is based on some pre-existing property or has tie in media that does a better job of explaining this Universe better but it’s not in the game.

Characters are fine, a bit bland but fine. They try to pull of an emotional scenes but the lack of time we spend with the characters and how in the dark we about the setting just makes everything feel hollow. There’s a romantic subplot that exists to mostly justify why the only female in the game acts like a stupid bitch towards the main character after he is framed after the betrayal. The characters also do that thing where they don’t don’t explain what's going on to each other and I’m not even sure that the main character bothered to at least tell everyone about the whole vampire thing during his trial after he’s framed.

tldr: It's a competent 3rd person cover based shooter with a ton of missed opportunities concerning the story and gameplay. If you want to waste about 7 hrs and get piss easy platinum trophy then I'd give it a try.

Edit. It seems I spoke to soon.
I was on the last level when I wrote this, the werewolves are the vampires even though the French guy at the start called them lycans at the start of the game but ok. Turns out our friend who betrays us was always a vampire. He was speared as a child by the leader of the group the main character belongs, who always knew he was a vampire but told nobody about it not even the adopted son. The leader isn't even part of the conspiracy he just decided to do nothing about it for some reason. The game tries to pull a "Humans are the real monsters" thing but falls flat on its face because the main human conflict is about trying to expose the vampire plot and the monsters are killing machines. Ends on a sequel hook, but it'll never get one.

I just started playing Persona 4 Golden since I've had the game in my backlog for ages and I would really like to finish the game before Persona 5 Royal comes out on Steam next month. I previously attempted a playthrough on my old potato ass laptop like a year or two ago but that thing could barely run the game without the frames stuttering to hell, but now I've got myself a nice gaming rig so I can play the game at a stable 60FPS in 1080p.

Also I've been playing Doki Doki Literature Club on the side in small doses because autism.
