What does queer even mean?

Queer is just an umbrella-term for "not entirely normal", in a deliberately unspecified way. It can be used to call attention to oneself insomuch as an article writer will call he/her/xirself queer and you have to decide what kind of queer it is through context clues. It's somewhat related to how there 1000 genders and 900 of them mean "my gender is completely unique and special and unlike everyone else's, pay attention to me."

The word 'queer' is a tad bit older than the SJW movement, as in a few hundred years older, somewhere during the 16th century. Even its more modern connotation goes back to the 1980s and 1990s at the very least, but the oldest record we've found for it being used as a slur dates back to 1894 when John Douglas started tossing shade at Oscar Wilde for gaying up his son.

It doesn't mean anything.

"Queer" means a marketing opportunity.

I don't know what it's supposed to mean, but, when I hear it, I assume one of two things:

The person is straight and pretending they have some sort of connection to the LGBT. Sometimes this means they like kinky shit and are homophobic enough to think that's the same thing as being gay.

The person is gay or lesbian and is trying to walk that back for whatever reason. Sometimes they do it for career reasons (Lee Pace giving his female fans some false hope they'd have a chance). Sometimes they do it to avoid trans harassment. Some lesbians call themselves "queer" as a hedge against being terfed.

The vagueness you're getting at is exactly why "Queer" is such marketing gold. There's no solid definition as far as most folks are concerned, so it's a nebulous enough concept to adorn with lifestyle products. Case in point - I was talking to a gay friend the other day, he was listening to 'Gay Radio' on his iPhone.

"What the fuck makes it GAY radio?" I ask him.
"I don't really know." He said, "They play good house music."

Originally it meant something strange or odd. Then it became a slur against gay men. Then gay men "took the word for themselves" like black people and nigger.

Now I think it means anyone who has any sexuality that isn't white, pure heterosexual. You a straight guy who can admit if another dude looks good without wanting to fuck him? Well hand over that hetero card! You're queer now!

In short, it's become more Tumblr snowflake bullshit.

"Queer" can mean about three things to three different groups:

To old aristocratic redneck hillbillies like myself, it just means/meant "strange." As in you and a buddy are walking through the backwoods and see a car in a tree. You turn to your friend and say "Man, That's Queer!"

To those who are a bit more an old urban elite, it was a veiled observation of a particular persons sexual preferences. As in, you and an old chap are having a scotch and tonic at your local gentleman's club. Your associate asks what is up with old Geoffery over there. You respond: "oh... him? He is a bit Queer."

Now, to the "socially conscious" and a good portion of the LGBT block, queer mean not Cisgender and/or Heterosexual. As in, you are talking with a good looking man in your local gay-bar and S&M club. A straight couple walks in. You yell at them: "YO! this place is Queers only!"

I hope that explains things a bit.

You kind of glossed over the usage popular among just rednecks, where it was a synonym (or intensifier) for "faggot", and thus a pejorative term hurled as an insult at people who were either homosexual or failed to be sufficiently stereotypically male (for example, I knew a guy in high school who liked indie rock and read a lot who got called a 'faggoty queer' a lot because of the fact he didn't like hunting or football and was vocal about both).

I'm serious. Is it just regular SJW snowflake shit or is it something specific and well defined?
It's umbrella based term for all of the fucking snowflakes of the LGBT movement. Anyone who isn't the four normal acrynoms are pretty much involved with the word Q. + is for all the rest of the additional piece of shits who clearly didn't get the memo that their sexual orientation is faker than a Mewtwo golden Burger King Card.
