Containment What If?

What if the only books Chris could read in the Jail of Fail were "hard science fiction" - no "psychic powers", no faster-than-light, no "magical crystals", etc?

What if Chris was born in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan? He would be married to some Afghan girl in exchange for some goats and would spend his days taking care of his herd. No Internet, no Sonichu, only the Quran and Allah.

To people without any meaningful science education, realistic spaceships and star wars lightspeed starfighters are the same thing. It's essentially "real magic". When you don't understand how something works, there's basically no difference between technology and magic, because you're operating on belief instead of understanding. That's why it's easy to get people to believe that 5G causes COVID.

In a way, soft SF is like a modern version of fantasy.

And on that "scale of science fiction hardness", if the Sonichu comics are SF, they could be at 0.

Even works like Superman comics and Futurama would be harder SF than Sonichu.

That's the thing. People without a basic science background (i.e. most people because nobody pays attention to science class in US schools) can't tell the difference between Star Wars and Apollo 13. Hence all the articles about "NASA invents warp drive" and such. They don't understand how physics works and to them hyperdrives and lightsabers are just as plausible as putting men on the moon.

Now, people *with* science backgrounds do enjoy a fun story of easy space travel, which is why they tolerate some handwavium like in The Expanse where they have magic fusion torch drives that don't melt the ship (plus the protomolecule shit). But that further blurs the line when people with real science backgrounds say The Expanse is "realistic".

Anchuent Cherokian Magic really isn't that different from the Kessel Run, but people assume "space shit is real because NASA does it".

What if Chris had been born into a wealthy millionaire family? Would his life have been infinitely better? or could he still have turned out to somehow still be a disaster?

Ever see the Atomic Rockets site? It's a bit tl;dr, but it shows what makes hard SF.

A lot of it may not be taught in US schools, and what is taught, Chris likely slept through or read Goosebumps then.

Which raises an interesting question: what if Chris didn't sleep or read Goosebumps during class?

What if Chris got into tf2? what class would he main?
he's really terrible at games, I cannot see him playing something fast paced and multiplayer like tf2, there's just wayy to much going on, he would instantly be overwhelmed and probably ragequit immiedately. I really could only see him playing a useless engi who does nothing all game but repair shit at spawn, or suicide rush with a pyro repeatedly.

I honestly cant even imagine him playing any game on a keyboard and mouse, especially no games that require quick reactions and precision. He lacks both of those essential skills and if history has shown us anything, Chris does not learn and certainly would never get better with practice.

What if Chris had been born a century ago? How would his antics fare growing up in a late Victorian and Great War era world?

He would currently be buried in the filled in remains of a trench under a wheat field somewhere in France.

It wouldn't have made much difference because people like the Chandlers don't remain millionaires for long.

He's pretty awful at games that aren't Sonic and Pokemon because that's all he's really played in the last 20+ years.

he's even awful at the games he did play, even the ones that actual babies play. Sonic and pokemon included, he just favors them because they came with cartoons he could consume. Besides he just played pokemon to catch female pokemon (lovequest)

See his smash and SC videos where he struggles to barely beat npc bots on easy mode.
