Chris is not an attractive man! I wish that I could make him look nicer, even though it would be very hard. First I would cut off all of his hair, maybe even shave his head. He does not have a nice head shape, but he does not have nice hair either. I would buy him nicer clothes, in much better colors than what he wears. He wears colors like a woman or child, and would look better in black or gray. I would like him to lose a lot of weight, too, but that would be even harder than to change the shape of his head!

What would you do if you could dress Chris?

What if Manchester High had a decent autism program? A room perhaps where autistics like Chris ( Im sure he wasn't the only one there) could "check in" and recieve help for various social and academic foibles?

I get the sense MHS didn't really have one, and just had a general "sped room." I've heard in some states with poor education funding ( the south) special ed rooms are little more than a slightly spruced up broom closets to dump "problem kids". I also know Autism special ed was just beginning to start in the 90s, mainly aimed at grade schoolers.

Would it have made any difference, teachers and assistance who actually knew about autism and were able to really know what was going on with Chris? Is that what happened At MHS, and it made no difference? Borb must have had to attend IEP meetings for Chris, if those things existed back then. Any thoughts?

While the "broom closet thing" might be exagerrated, I do know that the south is notorious for having underfunded public services. Maybe its gotten better though. And correct me if Im wrong, but wasn't autism centered special education just starting in the 90s? Or did they have it back in the 70s and 80s too? And I thought IEP meetings were a regular part of autism special education? Please let me know.

That's mostly what I meant. Special education is supposed to help you with life skills, but if Chris' parents didn't want to instill their own, it wouldn't have happened. He may have had better social skills or such, though.

I doubt an IEP or sec.504 would have helped him. He lacks life skills that Borb didn't instill in him. Even if they had the program, he wouldn't have been in it, due to Borb. So having it wouldn't have made a difference.

The presence of a child definitely seemed to keep Barb and Bob in what appeared to be a loveless marriage. Is there any evidence of them showing any kind of love or affection or even friendship with one another? There are a couple of pictures of them together like some elderly couples take where they both look like they're trying not to notice the other is there, but apart from that...?

Maybe Bob made the decision when Chris was born that he was going to 'do the right thing' and not divorce Barb and stick around until Chris was out of high school. And then Chris was diagnosed with autism and Bob decided he would stick around until Chris was independent, maybe that would take a little longer. And then Barb essentially kept him perpetually a child and, whelp, he was stuck with her.

Then no. Chris isn't the way he is due to the lack of any special programs for autistic individuals. He's the way he is because of poor parenting, which includes the decision to "mainstream" him.

Besides, Chris admits that he didn't pay any attention in the special classes he was in, probably because he was taught that none of it really applied to him.

I'd send Chris to the doctor, the dermatologist, and then the barber (Off with that long, greasy hair!). I'd put him on a diet and exercise regime to get him to refurbish himself as much as he could. Then, I'd throw out all his tomgirl clothes and give him a brand new wardrobe full of more casual, but stylish clothes that actually fit him (Think /fa/ on 4chan). His chances of getting a girlfriend or a job would go from -87% all the way to 0%.
