Containment What If?

What if Chris and Barb kidnapped Cole's wife in a deranged attempt to get a ton of money so that Barb could finally pay off the mortgage/bills and Chris could buy more toys.

Chris thinks he's clever as shit.
Do you think he gets this from Barb? Meaning, for example, after the house fire, Barb bragged (I forgot to whom, maybe Big Al) about how she was giving the people at the insurance company a run for their money (literally) because they didn't expect her "to be so smart." Her small-town hucksterism is a point of pride for her, so I wonder if that rubs off onto Chris.

Superficially there are some similarities, but I think Chris and Barb's overconfidence comes from different places.

Like, Barb has had a lifetime of manipulating people by being a trashy whore. She knows she's able to make her scams work occasionally. She just overestimates how often she can do this, and when most of her scams fail, her ego doesn't let her admit it. She'll adamantly refuse to pay a credit card bill, right up until she's sued over it, and then... she makes a payment plan with the company (having won nothing), and then play it off to Chris like it was a success.

Chris, on the other hand, is too stupid and autistic to notice how transparent his scams are. When Chris is trying to hide something, he can't imagine all the ways that his deceit is etched on his face and body language. That's just autism.

:stupid::stupid::stupid:

If you're talking about morally, then yeah, definitely. Chris scams people and businesses all the time, without batting an eye, because he was raised that way. Like he'll buy merchandise for cheap at one store, return it to another, and then pocket the difference. He calls it "wheelin and dealin".

He's never considered the possibility that it could be considered immoral, or at all a scam of some kind, just because he grew up thinking that was normal.

You know, I'm glad recent Chistoriography has focused more on Barb. Until relatively recently a CWCki reader would think Chris is the way he is because he was raised by Bob who was in the Klan.

And also, as obnoxious as Coleslaw is, I can certainly see where he's coming from on refusing to talk to her, even putting the whole biological father controversy aside.
