What is objectively the best Final Fantasy?

but not FF4. It is my favorite of the 2D games because it has a stronger cast than even FF6.
I'll admit it has a decent cast. I found the cast of VI to be pretty shallow honestly. I did at least care about the characters in IV. I didn't really care much about any of the characters in VI.
FF6 is very close to being my favorite 2D FF. It would actually be higher if not for the last dungeon being bullshit, but the early game is basically flawless until the world of ruin, and even then it's good, it's just that last stretch that sucks. The opening cinematic is extremely epic, I doubt they'd do it justice in a remake.

As for FF5, idk man... It's so goofy in tone, I just don't really care about it much. I like FF2 least of all, but I actually wanted to like it, the gameplay just wouldn't let me. Total opposite with FF5.
I'm kind of the opposite of you. I think VI takes itself way too seriously for what it is. VI-VIII all take themselves way too seriously. The stories in those games really aren't that amazing when you actually start to sit and think about them and if you're going to take yourself that seriously you'd better have the story to back it up. V's goofiness sort of makes me not sit and think too hard about all the ridiculous shit happening in the game. VI-VIII are tryhards that really want you to sit and think about their stories but they're just as ridiculous if not more so. Especially VII.

I dunno. The older I get the more I appreciate just a light hearted fantasy story without a bunch of stupid convoluted tryhard bullshit like FF5. I find these days I actually think I prefer the Dragon Quest games over any of the Final Fantasy games just because they're more of a chill light hearted fantasy adventure story without a bunch of angsty tryhard bullshit. I used to kind of hate them. I thought they were janky and silly.

I've never gotten very far in FF2. It never really seemed worth playing. The little bit of it I have played wasn't very fun. I have been thinking about checking out the SaGa games though which are I guess based on the leveling system used in FF2. I think they're made by the same guy but it sounds like they're totally different than Final Fantasy games.

I find IV to be bland.
Ah, the rug pulls. How they pile up. I recall when I was vaporizing Golbez for the second time—only to have his severed hand steal the Dark Crystal.

With V there's consolation: each time Exdeath shatters a crystal, you’re rewarded with jobs.

The game seems intent on tormenting you with guest characters. Aside from Tellah, and the twins (who at least try) the rest are as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

Why FF7? I hate FF12 too, combat system is maybe the worst up to that point, and the cast is weak. Balthier is overrated.
Got them for dirt cheap to see what it was about. I'm right after the crossdressing bit where some of the Avalanche guys are being killed off. My impression of it is that the story is an little bit too "safe" for my taste.

I did 8 up to the point where Cid sits Seifer down to tell him to get his shit together. The only thing that I hate about it was the autistic levels of min-maxing.

I think that I'm already halfway through 12 (raided the lab) and my impression is that I really hate most of the main cast and I currently don't have much of an reason to actually care about Vayne. And it actually took me an while to get used to the combat and classes; but it's one of those things that doesn't really scales as fast I'd like it to.

12 was a half-assed MMO with no ending in sight.

The "gods manipulating mankind" thing? Where was it? Why the hell are Vayne and Cid going on about taking back their destiny? I don't know. If you cut out their lines It’s just another Final Fantasy empire being controlled by some weird, god-like alien.

Now that everyone is shit-talking 12, the best FF is, of course, 12.
You will never convince me this isn't the best shit ever, inject this straight into my veins.
FF needs much less "Nomura Anime" and much more "Shakespearean Stage Play."

Another thing that I hate about 12: They've killed off the judges way too fast. You can't introduce shit this unhinged and immediately take it away from people

If only Square Enix didn't fuck with Yasumi Matsuno to the point of him quitting the project for "health reasons", we could've gotten something like Vagrant Story but with the budget of a mainline Final Fantasy.
