I'll admit it has a decent cast. I found the cast of VI to be pretty shallow honestly. I did at least care about the characters in IV. I didn't really care much about any of the characters in VI.but not FF4. It is my favorite of the 2D games because it has a stronger cast than even FF6.
I'm kind of the opposite of you. I think VI takes itself way too seriously for what it is. VI-VIII all take themselves way too seriously. The stories in those games really aren't that amazing when you actually start to sit and think about them and if you're going to take yourself that seriously you'd better have the story to back it up. V's goofiness sort of makes me not sit and think too hard about all the ridiculous shit happening in the game. VI-VIII are tryhards that really want you to sit and think about their stories but they're just as ridiculous if not more so. Especially VII.FF6 is very close to being my favorite 2D FF. It would actually be higher if not for the last dungeon being bullshit, but the early game is basically flawless until the world of ruin, and even then it's good, it's just that last stretch that sucks. The opening cinematic is extremely epic, I doubt they'd do it justice in a remake.
As for FF5, idk man... It's so goofy in tone, I just don't really care about it much. I like FF2 least of all, but I actually wanted to like it, the gameplay just wouldn't let me. Total opposite with FF5.
I dunno. The older I get the more I appreciate just a light hearted fantasy story without a bunch of stupid convoluted tryhard bullshit like FF5. I find these days I actually think I prefer the Dragon Quest games over any of the Final Fantasy games just because they're more of a chill light hearted fantasy adventure story without a bunch of angsty tryhard bullshit. I used to kind of hate them. I thought they were janky and silly.
I've never gotten very far in FF2. It never really seemed worth playing. The little bit of it I have played wasn't very fun. I have been thinking about checking out the SaGa games though which are I guess based on the leveling system used in FF2. I think they're made by the same guy but it sounds like they're totally different than Final Fantasy games.I like FF2 least of all, but I actually wanted to like it, the gameplay just wouldn't let me.
