What is your choice for the best videogame ever made?

Street Fighter 2. It supercharged arcades in the early 90s in a way that hadn't happened since Pac-Man. It spawned an entire genre of games that, for better or worse, are still plugging along today.

I'm really struggling to pick a single game because there's the dilemma of offline vs online (where quality varies wildly based on playerbase), whether or not to take replay value into account... etc.

That said it's probably Duke Nukem 3D. It's the perfect blend of power fantasy, humor, cool factor, and smooth gameplay. Never have I wished more for a good sequel or even a fucking reboot/remake than with DN3D.

Super Metroid. I can't even count how many times I've played through that game. Everything from the music to the graphics to the level design is pretty much perfect.

One thing I really liked when playing Super Metroid recently was its attention to detail with small things. Like how a single room will have a certain enemy that you won't find anywhere else in the game, but the developers went to the trouble of designing and programming a one off enemy when they didn't have to. It just gives the game that bit more life and uniqueness. SOTN did the same.
