What is your choice for the best videogame ever made?

Said it before in a similar thread, so I'll say it again.

Phantom Dust.
An arena battler/card game that very few people heard of, let alone played. I have never played another multiplayer game where almost 100% of your losses actually feel like your fault (rng is still a thing though, can't win if you pull nothing but Aura Particles and a Defense Skill).

It was probably one of the last times I genuinely enjoyed multiplayer. Can't stand most multiplayer games now, no one plays for fun anymore, they opt for the "meta" and tryhard to the point where you either play ball with the 2-3 options you're allowed to use, or you fuck off to another game.

This isn't my favorite game ever but lately I've been thinking about how good Dusk is. It might be the most perfect shooter ever made. Everything about is just superb. The atmosphere, the level design, the way the guns feel, the enemy variety. All of it feels like it was made by an industry veteran who really understands game design, but it was just some guy who puts out bullshit little horror games like Iron Lung. Basically Quake if it wasn't rushed out the door by Id software.

Man I really like Dusk... I think I'm gonna go play Dusk again.

Civ III with mods and the game editor. IV has a much more useful editor for actual game designers but for losers like me III reigns supreme.

Super Metroid. I can't even count how many times I've played through that game. Everything from the music to the graphics to the level design is pretty much perfect.

For me it's Path of Exile. I started in the beta, and, exept for bugs and other issues you'd expect to find in a beta, it was already FUN. And every 3-4 months for the next 8-10 years it got BETTER. Sometimes significantly better. It's the only ARPG with real build diversity and choice. Builds defined by items? Check. Builds defined by starting class? Check. Builds defined by the skill tree? Check. Builds defined by a combination of everything? Check in spades.

And different builds actually play differently. I like Grim Dawn, say, but there's literally like 4 builds, despite the 30 some odd classes available. POE has everything an ARPG needs to the nth degree - yes, one hit deaths suck, yes, the grind and item chase are for real (I mean the company is called Grinding Gear Games ffs), yes, trading is irrationally difficult and requires 10 apps and an IT degree to do, but it was still peak gaming for a solid 10 years.

It's a shame they ruined it (for once it wasnt even DEI shit that killed a game, it was just a few bad decisions that they couldn't or wouldn't change).

Second choice would be HOMM3. Or 4. Can't decide. But i even like the shitty later ones so I'm probably not the best judge.

Star Wars: Empire at War for me. I have the most hours in it by far and its modding scene is still fire.

It's not my personal favorite, but I'm gonna have to say Tetris. It's gone on for decades with dozens of remakes and variations. If you ask some random dude on the street if they ever played Tetris, odds are good you're going to get yes as a response. Besides maybe Minecraft, you'd be hardpressed to find another game with such wide spread appeal.

Not gonna lie. Streets of Rage 4 & Knuckles was pretty sweet
Tetris is kind of like a board game that's a video game, if you get what I mean.

My Mom once confused it with Minecraft, which genuinely pissed me off for how famous, mainstream and old Tetris is.

I wish I was good at image editing :story:

Ghost Trick for me is a pinnacle of storytelling in games. Nothing really comes close. The pacing, the characters, the twist and the resolution, almost everything was done with expertise even the animation and music was accompanied with whole loads of style. While accomplishing all that, the game didn't seem pretentious when the ultimate message of the game was revenge bad. It had a load of charm and ingenuity for a game made in Capcom.

To mix up the choices a little bit, I'll throw out some:

chained Echoes - A 16-bit style game that is just perfect from start to finish. The power scaling, characters, battles and story are perfection. If you like 16-bit games, play this.

Gears of War 1 - Big dudes, gore, guns and a multiplayer that was legit frightening at times. Back in the days before Xbox Chat, you had to join the in game chat, but when you died, you could only speak in the lobby. Hearing your mate shout "Oh fuck there's t...." then silence, is fucking terrifying but a lot of fun.

Broken Sword - "It was Paris in the Fall..." Perfection from start to finish.

Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 Yuri's revenge - "Kirov, reporting." *whistling sounds* You are victorious x1000. The OG autism simulator.

Spy Vs Spy (OG) - Plant traps while avoiding traps and running for a plane. Simple, perfect.
