What is your choice for the best videogame ever made?

Counter-Strike, all the versions. Nothing comes close. I played it as school kid, and now my youngest kid school me on the same fucking maps, more than twenty years later. It's simply a timeless classic, like no other game.

For single player there are many more contenders: The civ games, factorio, subnautica, fallout 1+2, and minecraft is definitely up there.

I know it's been said to death, but for me it's Ocarina of Time. I'll agree that Windwaker and TP polished the 3D formula better in comparison, but it still blows me away how well Nintendo got it done for the first 3D Zelda. I love it for the dungeons and the world. Each dungeon has its own distinct look and theme (the forest temple probably being my favorite). Lots of people shit on it but I think it still holds up, and since the 3DS remaster smoothed out some of the annoying things about the game, (like the Iron Boots being a C-Button Item rather than an equipabble item) I think there is no reason not to love it.

I don't think there Is a "best" video game, but if there was, Ocarina of Time would be the strongest contender I could think of. It's amazing how, with their first attempt at making a 3D Zelda, they got it so right that the game still holds up 30 years later.

Yeah, it's a mainstream opinion, but come at me. I will die on this hill.

Gonna side with the previous Ocarina of time posters. It's an extremely cliche contender on best games lists for a reason. Even if it is a somewhat surface level game compared to other entries in the series it is immersive on a lot of levels. From the integration of the cinematics in the cutscenes, to the music. To the fluidity of its gameplay even at its absurdly low by modern standards fps. It's a ridiculously high bar.

Some might be a little contrarian and say Majora's Mask has more going on but I don't think it integrates it's complexities in as fun or fluid of a manner. In particular I'd critique the sheer amount of waiting around for events it makes you do by nature of its time system. It makes navigation of the fun house that is the space of the world tedious as shit at the worst of times. Where as ocarina of time let's you navigate it's fun house world at much more your own pace leading to way more organic navigation. That being said it's "more" ocarina of time at the end of the day and that makes it awesome in spite of that, and it does reward your patience in that regard. I just dock points on the fun meter because of it's a major issue people who say it's the better game seem to gloss over at all times.

I'll go ahead and skip the games that have been said already and throw out Roller Coaster Tycoon. I had no idea what I was getting into when I got a copy in a frozen pizza box and the sandbox gameplay blew my mind at the time. Plus the entire thing is coded in assembly, so it runs buttery smooth on most computers. Sometimes I still pop in the original disk and it runs fine on modern PCs despite being 20+ years old. Shame that Atari murdered the series.

I'd say Super Metroid is up there. The graphics, music and gameplay have aged really well. The world design still looks great too. The one benefit of getting Alzheimer's when I'm old is I'll get to play this game for the first time again.,

I'd also say Mario 3, Zelda: Link to the Past, Wipeout 2097 and FF7 were close too.

Wipeout 2097
I'd put Wipeout 3 special edition(not wip3put) higher up if it wasn't PAL exclusive. It's got most the tracks from 2097, Auto saving/loading as well as analog controls. Making it basically the culmination of what psx wipeout had to offer. The issue is the 50 fps makes it feel slightly off here and there when used to 60fps.

If you like psx wipeout I can't recommend ballisticNG enough.

And it was made by one guy, which still absolutely blows my mind.

I never played lots of Wipeout 3. It felt a lot slower than 2097 and I wasn't as much into the clean and minimal look. But I would need to really pump some hours into it. The gritty atmosphere, soundtrack and track design of 2097 was so good. It was like this perfect culmination of game design, music, aesthetics and product placement. I really do need to play Wipeout 3 a lot more and appreciate it. The only other one I played was that Omega Collection which I didn't mind.

"Perfect" is a pretty strong word. If I had to say a game that I find (almost) perfect, it would have to be Disco Elysium. Surprised no one has said it yet. It's one of those experiences I'll never relive again.

Tears of the Kingdom is probably another one of those absolutely impressive games.

Smash ultimate or melee are also perfect games.
I hope to God that Ansem/me is added to the potential deluxe edition as the final character.

Neither Koji Igarashi nor an army of indiefags has been able to make anything definitively better than Castlevania: Symphony of the Night after 27 years of trying, so I think I'll go with that.
I feel like Aria of Sorrow comes pretty close, and the DS games were pretty good, but yeah, your probably correct on that.
