What is your choice for the best videogame ever made?

Gotta be Minecraft. It's the best executed example of 'you can do anything, make anything, and go anywhere' that has ever existed, one no regular development studio could have ever achieved with the industry standard approaches to game development.

Honorable mentions to Outer Wilds and Left 4 Dead 2 because they execute in their own spaces better than anything else. If we're going back in time then Quake and Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

Not a videogame, but those shareware/100 game CDs from way back were absolutely fantastic as a kid. You had no idea what you were getting into when you went through those folders.
You could start the day with a racing game, get lucky finding an Asteroids clone halfway through the list, and before you go to bed you suddenly know all the rules of Mahjong.
My dad used to get ripoff game compilations from a friend which came on 5.25" floppies for the BBC Micro. You'd fire it up and there'd be a menu of 10-50 games with no info but the name. Half of them wouldn't load, the other half would be a completely random mix of original games, clones, demos, and shareware. Hell of a way to be introduced to gaming as a kid. Way too many versions of Repton and shitty clones of QBert.

I didn't play Bioshock until over a decade after it had released and I already knew all the twists and stuff and still found it to be an amazing experience. Bioshock 2 I knew nothing about, I've never really heard people talk about it outside of "eh it's ok but not as good as the first one." I ended up loving it so much more than the first one, it definitely has to be one of the most underrated games of all time.

I haven't played the remake just because I feel zero need to, but RE4 is pretty much perfect. I've heard the remake is good too so maybe I'll play it someday but I can sit down and play the original any time

I got the collection on Switch because it was on sale. Minerva's Den. All my feels. :feels:

I really struggle to pick a best game ever because I have too many that I really love. I've seen a few of them mentioned so I'll bring up another. Medieval II Total War is one of those games that you can just sink hundreds of hours into and love every bit of it. The factions all feel like they have something that makes them special and the battles are the most fun out of the series. The game rewards you for aggression, allowing you to really feel like you are a true conquering king.

There's a couple but I think I would probably go with Baldur's Gate 2. Despite it being a isometric game with subpar graphics its still more immersive to me then it's modern counterparts. Also it has the most fun combat in any RPG I ever played.

Smash Melee. Say what you want about the weirdos and criminals. It is a natural consequence of having millions who enjoyed a raw, thought out game with no bullshit serviced updates and no lag or server issues from online play. The fan-made online is both a blessing and a curse.

The Outerwilds. If you like orbital mechanics, puzzle solving, and exploration, this is the game for you. Don't look up spoilers because it's basically an information game. Knowledge of the game mechanics is power
