Internal Twitter emails released by Elon Musk via Matt Taibbi show that Democrat staffers wanted Twitter to censor more. The emails are related to Twitter’s suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story.

NetChoice’s Carl Szabo emailed then-head of public policy at Twitter Lauren Culbertson after polling 12 congressional staffers; three Democrats and nine Republicans. According to Szabo’s email, Democrat staffers complained that Twitter allowed conservatives to “muddy the water and make Biden campaign look corrupt.”

The Democrat staffers compared the Hunter Biden laptop story to the email scandal of Hillary Clinton, where she set up an unsecured server in her home that contained classified emails.

Szabo wrote of the Democrats: “They linked this to Hillary Clinton’s email scandal: she did nothing wrong but because the press wouldn’t let the story go, it became a scandal far out of proportion. In their mind, social media is doing the same thing: it doesn’t moderate enough harmful content so when it does, like it did yesterday, it becomes a story. If the companies moderated more, conservatives wouldn’t even think to use social media for disinformation, misinformation, or otherwise.

“The Democrats were in agreement: social media needs to moderate more because they’re corrupting democracy and making all ‘truth’ relative. When pushed on how the government might insist on that, consistent with the First Amendment, they demurred: ‘the First Amendment isn’t absolute.’”

Elon Musk has promised more transparency to increase the public’s trust in Twitter. After a user requested documents related to the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story, Musk said all internal documents about Twitter’s history of censorship would be published on Twitter.

I read the thread and gave it a genuine, fair shake. I was entirely open to seeing extremely hard hitting, direct evidence of Biden campaign staffers going "deboost every mention of Hunter Biden on the website" or "add Hunter Biden's name to a trending blacklist".

I think it's extremely gay that the Twitter jannies took the moderation into their own hands under the CEO's nose but I seriously don't see anything damning or worthy of convictions. When you take the time to look at what they remove, all I've seen are them reporting pictures of Hunter's penis to Twitter HQ.

Twitter took extraordinary steps to suppress the story, removing links and posting warnings that it may be “unsafe.” They even blocked its transmission via direct message, a tool hitherto reserved for extreme cases, e.g. child pornography.

Taibbi also never showed that Twitter's staff did it under orders from Biden's campaign team. It was done independently by a private corporation, which legally isn't a violation of the first amendment. In which case, the problem's basically solved now since Twitter's under new leadership, Elon fired the people responsible, and Elon can very easily just reject takedown requests from political parties. James Woods can freely post images of the President's son's cock all he wants now. All the Democratic Party can do about it now is seethe.

The only actual solid evidence Taibbi has shown of things being deleted at the behest of Biden's campaign staff were 5 links to illegally obtained nude images of Hunter that you can very easily find on the Internet Archive.

Taibbi also didn't post any statistics or numbers of how many takedown requests were made per party and how many were honored by Twitter, he only showed what percentage of Twitter's donations went to each party. People who live in San Francisco, one of the bluest cities in one of the bluest states in the country are overwhelmingly liberal? Shock and awe!

Trump's team also had direct access to Twitter HQ's email addresses. Mike Hahn emailed to complain about McEnany getting locked out of her account and got the response that the story violated their "hacked materials" policy. Something that wasn't just conjured up during the 2020 election. The emails between Yoel and the other jannies were them scrambling to figure out if the laptop story could be considered a violation of that policy so they could avoid getting even more flak for the decision.

By the way, Trump openly tweeted about the laptop story the same day Twitter started blocking the link.

I'll make it clear that I'm not defending Twitter's faggot jannies or their actions. I'm just saying that this is a total nothingburger. Elon wanted to cause some chaos by repeating things people already knew and Twitter had already announced themselves years ago, except in a scary sounding way.

This story didn't solely require on Twitter to be disseminated.

The NYPost is owned by Rupert fucking Murdoch, is a published platform and has an active reader base. Trump himself tweeted about it on October 14th. Trump and Giuliani talked about it extensively at their rallies and TV events. Biden was directly asked about it during their debate. It was covered on fucking Tucker Carlson (part of Fox News, a Murdoch company) for God's sake. It was mainstream news, both conservative and liberal. People knew about this laptop during the election. Still didn't change a damn thing.

If they really wanted to quash this story completely, none of the above would've ever happened. Its existence is a meaningless cudgel in the same way le ebin scary email server was.

Hillary already had a bad reputation, was an unpopular candidate among democrats, and le scary email buzzterm was enough to convince people on the fence not to vote. Nothing about what was actually in the emails, just the idea that Hillary Clinton was being shady. Joe Biden doesn't have Hillary's reputation and this story centered around his son, someone who's only political experience was spending 3 years as a vice chairman for Amtrak under George Bush 20 years ago.

Can't quote properly, but what makes anyone think genuine Republicans had these sorts of contacts? There's the comment about people in the White House having contacts, but a lot of people work there that are hardly in favor of the Republicans (hell just look what happened with Vindman or Ciaramella).

So I'll believe Republicans were trying to get people censored the same as Democrats were once examples of it actually come out showing that was the case.

Also based on the comments from Twitter's people it's clear they were censoring/limiting the story (the thing based on the hacked materials) and not some dick pics.

What I don't like is the guy who had the laptop took an image of the hard drive and gave it to Rudy Giuliani. What right does he have to take an image of the system's drive and give it to anyone, let alone the well established political enemy of the person in question that may have used that laptop? The image of that hard drive is ethically tainted. The information on it should never have been given to anyone. What flowed from that, I don't care about, because the NYP never should have been able to write that story in the first place.

As far as I understand he had a policy of something like "if you don't pick up your computer in 90 days, it's considered abandoned and becomes my property." So technically it was his, as far as I know.

IIRC dude waited over a year and the fbi didn’t do shit about the laptop, so he started sending the image around.

If I'm not mistaken, the laptop was seized by the government as part of an investigation, and he released the copy of the hard drive contents to Giuliani after that. Once the machine was seized, he had no appropriate reason to retain a copy of the personal contents of that hard drive. It would literally be no different than him keeping a copy of the hard drive contents after someone picked up their system. Also, given who he gave the copy to, it was clearly politically motivated. The entire thing is unethical and inappropriate.
