What types of games do you like and why?

I enjoy RPGs because I love getting lost in an environment and a story. I also enjoy how you get more powerful over time, and if you do things right, how you can become overpowered. Then there's shooters because shooting things are always fun. I don't really have a preference over first and third person shooters. Lastly is horror in the style of Silent Hill or Resident Evil 4 and earlier. I enjoy horro just because it's cheesy and fun.

I like RPGs, namely turn based RPGs. I've been playing then since I was about 13 years old? Persona 3 was my first turn based RPG.

I like them because you have to think before you act, your not mashing buttons or spamming attack combos. It adds a real challenge and feels more like a game to me. Bonus points if it's a dungeon turn based RPG.

Not to say I dislike every regular old RPG, I've been playing Tales of Zesteria lately and it's a blast.

I generally play a pretty big variety of genres, but my two absolute favorites are fighting games and RPGs

It's kinda hard to explain why I love fighting games so much. Maybe it's because I've always been so competitive and was just attracted to a genre that encouraged that behavior, even if I was stuck playing against an AI. I also love seeing how developers try to separate their games from a genre that admittedly doesn't have much variety, like Mortal Kombat's fatalities, King of Fighter's 3-on-3 system, or Guilty Gear's kick-ass soundtrack and character designs. That's why I especially love to look for really obscure fighting games and see why they never caught on, or laugh at how shit they are.

As for RPGs, I love it when I'm, given a massive world to explore, but still give me some sort of objective so I can understand how I should explore the world. Games like the Elder Scrolls or Dark Souls come to mind. I particularly love games that give the option of character customization; even if I can't see myself, goddamn am I a whore for that kind of feature.

I love all kinds of games. I play card games, mobile games, survival horror, RPG, JRPG, MMO, MOBA, VN - it all depends on wether or not the game captures my interest.
However, I can't think of any racing/sports games that I like off the top of my head. I also have a hard time finding rougelike or dungeon crawler games that I like, but I REALLY love Binding of Issac so I guess I do like that genre if done right.

Pretty much anything that is not a sport game, fighter or RTS, maybe even shooters (I don't usually play those, but I don't dislike those games). Currently, I'm mostly playing Roguelikes, RPGs and sometimes Platformers with the occasional OW or LoL match with friends.

As for the why, I like challenging games and/or exploiting mechanics to rush through a game once I already beat it. I don't like fighters and RTSs because I suck at those (:_(

2D bullet hell-y shmups, especially if they have good scoring systems, and RPGs, both turn based and of the action variety. Counting roguelikes in here to an extent.

It would be quicker to list what I don't play, which is pretty much just sports games. That said I couldn't be less interested in online competitive modes .To me, vs multiplayer games should be played with everybody in the same room where elbows can be dug into ribs and hi-fives can be dished out.

I've found that regardless of genre, I tend to like games that have a "meta" element to the gameplay, i.e you have something persistent that you keep developing over multiple "levels" or even playthroughs and clearing a level doesn't affect just that particular level, but also affects your longer-term game on that character / save file. For example, in strategy games that can translate to that if you're efficient with resources in one instance, those resources can be used in the future as well.

I like a good stealth game because the power is balanced. You play well enough, the game can be fairly easy. But if you mess up, then the game turned firmly in the enemies favor. You can go from being really powerful to the height of tension over one little mistake.

I love RPG's because of the worlds and stories behind the characters

i like open world games of most sorts (currently playing The Crew, Borderlands 2, Skyrim, and Assassin's Creed) where you can wander around and explore. world-building games like SimCity or Cities Skylines (and various other management type games like Theme Hospital or Syndicate or UFO Enemy Unknown).

i mostly play online co-op games though (Space Hulk Deathwing, Payday 2, Killing Floor, various team-based games like Battlefield, Arma, et c), and puzzle games (Portal, The Room) and very difficult platformers (VVVVVV, Super Meatboy, Brutal Mario) because they don't eat as much time (spent wandering around). i used to be pretty big into action RPG's and MMORPG's (remember Dark Age of Camelot?), but not so much any more.

its hard to find co-op people to play with on the regular though, so i'm often left alone. i play grand strategy games (Stellaris, Sid Meier's Civ games, Crusader Kings) as well. i'm a shameless achievement hunter and have something stupid like 3000+ achievements with 50 games where i have all of them (example, in Civ 5 i have 175 achievements out of 286. that's every single achievement excluding some DLCs i don't have. likewise with Payday 2 where i have 452 out of 551 for mostly the same reasons on top of just finding it boring to solo all the time).

i think i play (meaning i GM near constantly) more table top RPG's like D&D or whatever far more regularly with my friends than online videogames where it's mostly acquaintances or randos.

RPGs are my shit. Doesn't really matter to me which I play, give me a good story, fun world, good characters, and serviceable gameplay and I'm sold. FPS games are probably my second favorite genre. I can sink a ton of hours in a good FPS. I'll pretty much play anything as long as I think it's good. I guess I like to think my tastes when it comes to games is open.

The only genre I will not touch with a fucking 10-mile pole are fighting games. The communities are far too autistic for me (though Smash fans are the funniest autists) and I don't want to have to remember all these different combos for each character and game.

I like roguelikes. Randomly-generated things ensures replayability tends to be high, and permadeath et cetera adds to the challenge, but it's less the gametype itself and more the fact that there's such a massive variety of them. There's a lot of random roguelikes with really innovative features, and the basic roguelike template thing usually guarantees some degree of familiarity.
I also enjoy survival/zombie survival games, because there's something innately satisfying about going from 'struggling to survive' to 'walking about annihilating things, then forgetting to survive because you're too overconfident'.

My favorite genres are hack and slash action games and any kind of horror games but I will play almost anything.
The genres I generally don't care for are most sports games, MMO and anything with a tacked on open world.

I like flight and space sims because I have $1,000 worth of HOTAS, switchboard, rudder pedals, TrackIR, VR and other flight sim shit and it makes me feel like I'm not a huge old weirdo trying to reclaim his youth. But I am,

I like First Person shooters because murdering shit is fun

I like some action based RPGs (Zelda, Souls games, Monster Hunter, New Vegas and the Scrolls series) but I really don't know why

Mario Kart is pretty cool too

Out in public I often play "Bluetooth or insane"?

Sometimes it's both!

I like a lot of open world games.. Most because the exploration, or just driving around. It's also part of the reason I like MMOs so much. Big worlds with lots to see.. Bonus points if there's really good character customization (and this probably why I like Elder Scrolls Online so much.)

I used to be a huge gamer, but only games I play anymore are grand strategy like CKII and EUIV.

Once you get caught up in their complexity nothing else feels like a challenge anymore.

RPGs/JRPGs. Lot of meat to them I can pick em up put em down at the end of the day I want my money's worth
Farming sims/sims. Time investment, God complex, ect. ect.
RTS. I like to think and having to outsmart the AI or other players is fun really any game I have to think about I'll have fun with so Puzzle if it's a good one
Platformers. I suck at them but still fun
Fighting. Ai or with friends.
MMO's. Don't know why but I like them only when I have have friends to play with otherwise I get bored fast.
