What types of games do you like and why?

Anything with solid stories, characters and atmosphere (Alan Wake, Oxenfree, System Shock 2) when I really wanna sit down and play a game.

Ridiculously violent action-platformers (Broforce, They Bleed Pixels, Shank) when I wanna shut my brain off.

And sandbox games like GTA, Saints Row and Red Dead Redemption when I wanna do both.

anything with co op, since unless it's an RPG or something i enjoy playing shit with friends more.
when the co op mod for new vegas is released my whole life is over

I play RPG's. (on topic)

Large scale FPSs. Games like Squad or Red Orchestra, with servers of up to 80 people. It's as much about the spectacle as it is actually the gameplay. You aren't a hero, you aren't gonna go on a 15 man killstreak and get a special popup saying what a good boy you are, you are a cog in a greater machine. And there's a sense of comradarie with your immediate squaddies.

One example was in Squad (BF2's Project Reality mod spiritual successor), Russians vs Militia (Eastern European Paramilitary Rebels, think the renegade soviet states during the collapse of the bloc). We were the Russians. Round start, my squad and a second squad were going to advance into the mid areas via BMPs and a Logistics Truck, in order to try to establish a frontline and a FOB (There are no objective spawns, so you have to set up forward spawns manually) fairly deep into the map. So we're cruising along, I'm in the back shooting the shit over local (the game has radio with squad, but also a smaller proximity chat that fades via distance) voice chat, cracking jokes, when all of a sudden an explosion rocks us and we're all bailing out.

Some militia fuck had hit us with an RPG and we were in the midle of an ambush. I was medic so I was rushing around trying to triage people without getting shot myself, throwing smokes for cover, etc. It lasted only about 4 min before they melted back into the hills, but it felt far, far longer than that, and not before they had dealt some pretty serious damage to our team (The BMPs are worth quite a lot of tickets).

Also anything with progression of individual units is always a weak spot of mine, as long as they can also be taken away from you via permadeath. One of the reasons I love blood bowl so much.

JRPGs mostly. I find that I'd rather play one really long game over a period of time then play lots of shorter games. It's like a long novel you keep coming back to until you are done. It's cheaper too.

I am mostly an RPG gamer of almost any kind as long as they have an interesting story and mechanics. I like FPSs too if they have an rpgesque approach to them, such as the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and it's derived mods (MISERY for example).

I like games you can mod to make things like this.

In all seriousness I mostly play action games but I'll play RPGs as long as they don't require extreme micromanagement just to survive.

I'll play most games, as I enjoy playing various genres, but the type of game I tend to play the most are shooters. FPS and third-person shooters. Probably because I'm really interested in military-related stuff. I enjoy the more casual ones like CoD and the old Halo games, the old hardcore ones like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Delta Force, FPS RPGs like Borderlands, and especially the hardcore post apocalyptic ones like Metro and STALKER. I play Metro on Ranger Hardcore and STALKER with the Misery mod, so my dedication to the hardcore survival in a post apocalyptic wasteland is pretty autistic. That said, my favorite game that came out since The Metro series was Doom 2016, which I play on Nightmare because I seem to really enjoy hardcore shooters, be it in a realistic sense or an action movie sense.

Despite this, I also enjoy other genres. Platformers can be fun (even if I suck at them), I enjoy RTS games (Company of Heros series, anyone?), I've played RPGs that are fun, I enjoy the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, and the old Tony Hawk games kicked ass.

I'll pretty much give any genre a try, though I'm not a fan of fighting or racing games. They're just too repetitive for me to play long enough to justify spending $60 on.

I'd have to say for all time favorite genres it would have to be 4X/RTS grand strategy (meaning civ-like and total war) and CRPGs (modern favorites being Wasteland 2 and Path of Eternity). Other than that I tend to get stuck in an MMO on average a few months a year but I'm not the hardcore raiding type. I just prefer in depth single player games I guess.

Platformers (especially 3D ones), JRPGs (mostly turn based but I really like the Tales games), some survival horror games, and some open world stuff (really only Fable, The Elder Scrolls games, especially ESO, and Xenoblade Chronicles), Monster Hunter style action RPGs, and life simulation stuff like Story of Seasons (this includes Harvest Moon games pre-Lost Valley which was made by Natsume)

We don't have a general gaming thread so I posted this here
I might get this soon, right now I'm obsessed with Rocket League and a few rhythm games. I like most things except shooters and actual sportstype Gramer shit.

I love Rocket League but my friends are getting bored with it now and playing with randoms isn't as fun for me. It's the closest I've ever got to being in to a 'sports' game.

I enjoy a mix of genres depending on my mood but I'm also very fickle. I get the warm fuzzies from working well as a team and having each other's backs. Currently that's Overwatch but the Left 4 Deads had a similar effect. I hoped Borderlands would be the same but I got really bored with the gameplay, same with The Division and I don't know why. I guess some games just personally 'click' better than others.

Open world can be fun and I didn't care that much for the stories in the likes of GTA and Fallout. Wandering around and seeing the game world was the fun aspect. I'm so excited for RDR2 and enjoyed galloping around as the sun set, getting attacked by bears.

Finally, being creative and building my own world is great when I want a chilled gaming session. Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Tropico or, in the past, Theme Hospital/Park, early versions of The Sims.

The servers for Rocket League ate fucked right now. So many noob ball chasers right now, it's far too easy to destroy them, I do need a better challenge.
I am also trying to 3-star every Pacman championship 2 level but that game is brutally unforgivin.

Man, I've gone thru almost every rhythm (outside phone stuff) game in the last 8 years or so. Currently doing this one.

----warning extreme weeb----

I'm a total autist for fighting games, even the shitty and obscure ones. I've been playing a shit ton of Street Fighter V lately, despite the game's issues. Considering getting back into KoF14, and Guilty Gear has been taking up some of my time as well.

That said, I'm excited for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, despite the fact that it's looking like the MCU over the comics this time around. Still pissed about the distinct lack of X-Men characters (thanks FOX).

Also, players' choice for EVO 2017 when: http://store.steampowered.com/app/546390/Brief_Karate_Foolish/
