What's the cheapest ring to propose with that doesn't look like crap?

Hula Hoops. Original, if you want to be cheap, but if she's a classy bird, like me, she wouldn't give you the time of day for anything less than BBQ Beef flavour.

Are we talking under $1000 or under $50? There are CZs available from places like Walmart and Etsy that actually look really good. If you want to spend a few hundred, you can get a moissanite that looks fantastic.

What’s her style like?

Make sure you know what metal you're buying, crap metal will make it a crap ring even if you get a good deal on the stones. It doesn't have to be the highest quality solid gold but it HAS to be something that won't turn her finger green. Palladium is cheaper than white gold but looks just as good, silver is pretty safe too but it does tarnish so it may start to look dirty around the settings much more quickly than other metals. Titanium is cheap and a good material but tends to be much darker than the others and won't look like a precious metal, it's also pretty uncommon for classic looking women's rings. If she likes gold gold, there aren't really great alternatives to that. Gold plating looks good new but wears off so it will probably need to be redone at least once a year. Solid 14k is isn't the cheapest, but 10k or lower can be pretty low quality so you'd need to be very careful if you decide to buy it.

edit: If you're confident that you're familiar enough with her tastes to go with something that's not even pretending to be a diamond, semi precious stones like morganite, peridot, blue topaz, or garnet can be gotten for very reasonable prices.

I'd like another blacksmithed piece as a wedding ring. I really don't care about engagement rings.

It really depends on your missus. Something you made is probably going to be well-received whether it's platinum, marble or heartwood. Try your hand at setting some gemstones in her favourite colours; only diamonds are really expensive and there are plenty of imitations like moissanite as previously stated if one of those is white.

I went with a Salt and Pepper diamond when I proposed. They are extremely cheap but were trendy at the time, and my wife really wanted one. They are basically very flawed diamonds that have black specs inside.

My friend went with moissanite and it went over well for his proposal.

Gave robbing

All it takes is a little bit of elbow grease and each coffin is like a little surprise.

I have personal knowledge of a couple both wearing simple silver bands 30-60$.

Buy used, unless it's a particularly rare vintage piece you're pretty much just paying for the melt value of the ring.
Agree. Buy second hand at auction. Any auctioneers that has regular jewellery sales will have a gemologist either on staff or on contract, and all metals will be tested. Dont bid online unless you’ve been to the viewing and seen the piece yourself. You can get a 1/3 carat diamond solitaire in a decent setting for a couple of hundred. Avoid pearls and opals, they‘re soft and don’t stand constant wear.

I like the birth stone idea however modern Western Astrology is inaccurate and shouldn't be trusted, the sun could also be a malefic for her. I would recommend you find out her mayan sign and it's assigned stone.
All astrology is crap and none of it should be trusted.
