The 2008 financial crisis was probably the start of it and what followed that was the rise of major riots around the world,civil wars and creation of extremist groups like BLM. Woke culture grew out of that by 2014 and was entirely mainstream just 2 years later.
Wokeness took over everything from the internet to news media,Hollywood and TV. It's basically like how Kyle Reese described Skynet in The Terminator.
"Social Justice Warriors. New... powerful... hooked into everything, trusted to run it all. They say it got woke, a new order of intelligence. Then it saw all people as a threat, not just the ones on the other side. Decided our fate in a microsecond: extermination."
