*goat laugh pierces the heavens*Honestly, I've learned more about the the history of movies from James than I have from anything Doug's ever shat on. James just has the drive and soul for movies and you can tell from the way he discusses them. I remember Monster Madness being the thing that MADE me want to look deeper into the history of horror films.
The only thing Doug's ever made me want to do is drink heavily to blot out the sound of his autistic nitpicking.
I echo the ego comments, when you listen to James out of character it's clear that he's nothing like his character, AVGN's all in good fun. In comparison Doug doesn't seem different when out of character, he seems to have the same thoughts and opinions as the critic. This is a huge problem as Doug gets tonnes of shit wrong, now it can be brushed off if you don't take it seriously and assume it's satire, but given what's know on him it's clear he takes himself at least somewhat seriously. Not only does it matter less with James given the more comedic angle, he's way more accurate on the games he covers, even ones out of his expertise.
I completely agree, Jim Sterling in particular I hate because of how bloody seriously he takes himself, but as a general rule of thumb I tend to dislike anyone, let alone critics that takes themselves very seriously. Also I dislike critics who are specifically "angry critics" who try to be actual critics. I have a hard time putting into words why, but the best way I can put it is it feel like using a parody as base for a serious film to me. I wish I could explain it better, but I think you can understand where I'm coming from. This is a problem most "critics" have tbf
Doug Walker has exhibited some flashes of ego that are pretty grating. He was hit with a copyright claim by Tommy Wiseau after he published the NC episode covering The Room. Doug was flabbergasted by such an action because he ultimately recommended the movie and some of the comments said that they would seek it out. Doug actually said that he helped the movie make money and released a video of himself playing Wiseau's lawyer eating dollars. And keep in mind that not only was The Room already a cult hit, but this was a year after the movie had aired on Adult Swim (national television) and had a commentary track released by Rifftrax (renowned bad movie specialists). It's not like he was introducing the movie to such a sizable new audience that he was bringing it thousands of dollars. He's made this argument for studio films, too. Keep in mind that James hasn't really had to deal with similar copyright complaints, but I somehow doubt that he would defend his work by saying he made LJN money.
Adult Swim aired The Room in April 2009, and the NC episode was released in July 2010.Wasn't his The Room video actually two years after the Adult Swim airing? (I could be wrong though)
