What's the rarest game you own?

My Vice project Doom, which even after I beefed up my NES collection, was traded plus $5 for a complete Kirby's Adventure.

RIP my Vice Project Doom. You were with me since 1993.

But hey, selling is part of collecting, sometimes one title is worth enough for it. And I needed a CIB Kirby.

But got my first "Not for resale" game in Zelda Collectors Edition for the Gamecube. My beginner Holy Grail.

Not exactly "rare" but Marvel vs. Capcom for the PSX as well as a "Not for Resale" copy of Wario Land 2 for the Gameboy.

Maybe my complete Steel Battalion in box. I used to own a Wily Wars, but sold that for 330€ after buying for like, 80€.

If not that: probably one of my CIB Game & Watch systems, haven't checked their value in years.

Technically some of the demo games (Yoshi Story International Version is complete and was seen in store kiosks for instance) are rarer, I think, but it depends on if you count those.
Yeah, once you get outside the realm of retail-released games, things start getting fuzzy. Some people pay big money for store kiosk versions of games despite the software itself being no different than retail releases, but the cart sticker says Not For Resale, so that jacks up the value.

ClayFighter Sculptur's Cut was a Blockbuster exclusive, and Turok was obtainable by calling the publisher and complaining about the multiplayer bug that keeps you from finishing the game. Who would ever think to do that?

Aside from those, store kiosk exclusives from beyond the N64 era aren't worth much. I have a store demo GameCube disc that was left in a cheap store demo GameCube that a local store was selling off for cheap. It's been a while since I looked up its value, but it was only worth like $15. It also flat out doesn't work on Wii nor with Wavebirds, weirdly enough.

Yeah, I know. The specific quote I was responding to only talked about rarity and since the Turok cart wasn't "commercially released" either (it was a give away if you knew to complain that the regular version was broken) I figured that Yoshi counted too. For what its worth, YSIV is rather important, as its the whole Japanese release, but working on American N64s. And then there's DK64's NFRS demo version which had some data differences so its like 300 bucks too and they decrease in value from there to some being worth "only" around 40 dollars.

I was going for a CIB N64 collection a few years ago, but I slept on it and now its so much money and, just as importantly, physical space to dedicate to housing almost 300 boxed games that I would rather be playing on some form of emulator. Also, in person collecting really dried up for me. Speculators killed it, its no fun going to yard sales for games when you literally have to wake up at 6 in the morning and be the first one there to stand a chance. Would have more fun collecting literally anything else. I do still buy (mostly boxed) NES/SNES/N64 games though.

I tried for a complete N64 collection too, and ended up giving up at about the 60 game mark since I was sick of buying outright garbage. And I'm still missing a lot of good games that just never got cheap: all three Mario Parties, Paper Mario, Ogre Battle 64, and Majora's Mask, to name a few.

But, you know, I've got two Army Men games nobody gives a flying fuck about, and all the bad ones like Superman and South Park, just because they were so cheap.

I also managed to buy a few duplicates on accident and run into situations like how I just now discovered I have Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, after thinking about buying that game on eBay last week. Apparently I bought it seven years ago and completely forgot, but, there it is, on my shelf.

I used to have a fairly sizeable retro game collection which I sold off. Moved house and realised that I wasn't playing any of them and they are just taking up space (besides, can always emulate if I get the itch to play a game from my childhood). Had some fairly expensive games, mostly on the Mega Drive - both Shining Force games, Legend of Thor/Beyond Oasis, Dune II.

I kept my PS1 because I picket up some games in a charity shop which I would like to play before selling off. Among those are Megaman Legends 2 and Misadventures of Tron Bonne. Combined I think those are worth about £350/$425.

I probably have lots of old games that could be called rare but up until a few years ago I was a complete dumbass regarding taking care of discs, so whatever I have is scratched and has no case or manual. Recently I bought Wolfenstein 2009 and Eternal Darkness, and I have Too Human somewhere though I never played it.

I had a lot of shit from the NES era forwards with pristine boxes because the boxes were put in a big box out in the storage unit. I don't know what is rare but I looked up prices for some things a while ago and was surprised.
(only looking at sold items on ebay)

Rocket Jockey - not worth shit, like five bucks. Surprising.
The Tone Rebellion - not worth shit.
Fallout 2, big box in mint condition, complete with manual(never tried the recipes) and all that - price varies but I saw a copy in the same condition as mine go for $250. Weird, it was a very popular game.
Daggerfall complete with box, hugely popular game like Fallout so there should be tons of copies out there - 90-150 bucks.
UFO: Enemy Unknown (X-Com) - should be worth something but nah, unless it's on CD32, the playstation version isn't worth anything either and that I can understand.
Sin & Punishment, brand new, not worth shit. Same with Tales of Phantasia.
Vagrant Story and games like that, worthless.

Game & Watch stuff is always expensive.

What really surprised me was the value of Star Ocean: Second Story(PAL), last fall when I looked it up a complete copy in good condition sold for $150 and up. At a webstore it has a trade in value of 2000SEK(~200$) in store credit.

Pokemon Gold with box/manual in new condition is expensive but I only have the box/manual because I gave the cartridge and a gameboy color to the kid of a neighbor that helped me clear out a storage unit a couple of years ago, the kid was really happy to get a really old game so that was fun.

This is my (cartridge less) Pokemon. Box has been opened twice, once to get the game out, the other time just now to get the manual and stuff out. Since then it's been in a box with other games.

Digging around I also found Probotector, PAL version of Contra. Box is in really good condition.

That's the overall condition of most things I own. I don't collect or try to preserve things in good condition, I'm just lazy and forget where I put things.

The actually most rare things I have is probably some old Saturn alphas/betas/RCs that I got from a dude that used to work for Sega. I don't remember what they were and I don't think it's anything remotely interesting but I should probably rip those and upload them somewhere. They're probably in another forgotten box, I chucked them in there and forgot about them until now.

Physical copies of some PS3 games that I bought off Playasia, I guess. Resident Evil in box has an option to alternate it with the boxart for Biohazard.

My bestie used to have a copy of Cheetahmen 2 on NES, which she sold as soon as she learned that people more autistic than she was were selling it for $1500. (She paid far, far less than that for her copy.)

Just a heads up, if they aren't broken, dumped or just PAL versions of NTSC games with no content differences, your alpha games are worth hundreds of dollars each, maybe even more depending on what they are. Or, I suppose, less if they are all sports and shovelware. Feel free to upload them as a service to the world, if you want, but you could make a bit of money selling them to the right people if you don't.

I've got hard cartridge copies of Earthbound, Crono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG for SNES, and Harvest Moon 64 as well. Used to also have a cart/box/book of Splatterhouse 2, but I sold it.

Edit- Just remembered I also have the sequel to Hotel Dusk, Last Window. Only released in Japan and PAL. Glad it's in English for playing.

Edit 2- Found a pic I took of my SNES and N64 collection last year-

Thank you, I thought that only applied to rare arcade boards and old carts. I will upload them if I stumble upon them, things like that should be available to anyone interested.

If you are serious about it, you might want to check this place out. https://www.obscuregamers.com/forums/ I don't think they appreciate "join 4 sell" people, but if you need help dumping dev stuff, they are where I'd turn.

I don't think I have anything really rare, maybe the black label psx final fantasies, star ocean 2, wild arms 2, something like that.

That's a very good collection. I crossed out any games I don't have (and I don't have a cart of Banjo-Tooie but I do have Rare Replay which has the rom):

I'm pretty happy with my SNES collection, though the one game you have that I'd like is Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Talk about an underrated classic.

I also need to find a DK64 someday. There were only three yellow N64 games, and it's the one I'm missing. (the other two are Tony Hawk 2 and Earthworm Jim 3D)
