The first big push I think happened at a similar time to me having my first kid. I was a bit live and let live before that point, it was something I thought was barmy but I hadn’t thought much about the harm to children. I think pregnancy and birth knocks a lot of silliness and illusions out of many of us. It shows you in graphic, painful, bloody detail that biology is real. It also hits you hard with the protective instinct, which you know abstractly before but are often unprepared for the reality. I went from meh whatever tolerance to wary pitchfork wielder quite fast. I think I’m not a terribly bad person, and I was tolerant of a lot of stuff I was told I must be. My level of tolerance for all kinds of shenanigans has dropped lower than the abyssal plains, so I do wonder what the rest of society thinks (outside of the Twitter echo chambers.) I suspect a lot of people are realising the difference between tolerance and acceptance. I honestly don’t give a toss what consenting adults do in private and I don’t want anyone harmed for their sexuality. But…Bring it in public though and I’m an unwilling participant in your fetish, and we have a word for that.
