One thing about you Americans that confounds me.

What the frack is a 'fifth'?

A fifth of a gallon.

This would actually be 757 ml, but it's been rounded down to 750 ml by most bottlers.

I'm new to whiskey and while I've had a few bourbons, I just got a bottle of my first scotch: Monkey Shoulder. It's really smooth and I'm digging it a lot. I feel like it really opens up with a dash of water.

Been wanting to get a bottle of that, co-workers say that it's good.
Currently drinking some Buffalo Trace bourbon, and I'm liking it. Kinda has a honey tone to it.
Also got a bottle of Sazerac Rye, which is pretty damn good. It has a real spice to it, but it's smoother than most other ryes.

Bourbon drinker as I never had a scotch I like. A local distiller does a scotch style whiskey and this first batch wasn't aged super long, I think like 3 years. It's just got a enough flavor that I can't appreciate it and not think I'm drinking swamp water. 4 Roses is cheap bourbon and perfect for mixing. Way better than anything at the $20 price point in my opinion. I think it makes for good sipping too. I'm partial to an old fashioned, but usually just drink it neat. My go to special occasion drink is Knob Creek Single Barrel. I don't have the greatest pallet and I don't think I'm getting my money's worth much beyond the standard $40-50 single barrel and reserves. I need to say fuck it and go to the BBQ place nearby that has a great selection and make myself regret my bank account the next morning to find something higher end I appreciate. Last year I started getting into some ryes, unfortunately the selection in my area is pretty limited. I do like a local one and Bulleit is my go to.

Got a bottle of Monkey Shoulder today, goddamn it is good. It's nice and smooth, and has some sweet tones to it.

I'm thinking of buying me some whiskey for Halloween tonight. Most likely I'll get either Jim Beam or Jack Daniels, since I'm in the mood for bourbon and similar fare. Both brands are pretty good.

My apologies for the thread necromancy but Canadian Club is surprisingly decent despite being a low-end blended Canadian whiskey. I was expecting something awful like Evan Williams (the only whiskey I've tried that I cannot stomach) or at best mediocre like Clan MacGregor or Early Times, but it is surprisingly good. Not great, mind you. But decent.

My brother bought me a fifth of it as a Christmas gift and I just opened it today, I've been sipping on it all evening, actually.

Still, my favorite brands will always be Jameson and Jack Daniels.

Bought a bottle of Red Label today (was on sale) and it is pretty disappointing, even when it comes to blended whiskey.
I've had black label and :bluelabel: in the past and black was pretty decent (blue is overrated at £120 a bottle IMHO).
Red is overtly sweet and kind of non-descript.
I'll finish this one but I guess you really do get what you pay for in some cases.

My parents got me some of those ice cube molds that make a giant sphere of ice. I have to admit they are very nice with whiskey, they definitely don’t melt as fast as a bunch of cubes.

The only downside is you need a wide open glass for them. Smaller glasses or ones with narrower openings won’t work.

I like to use either stainless steel cubes or perfectly square cubes of ice. I have a silicone mold, which makes rather large ones, two are good for a nice drink and looks traditional and aesthetically pleasing. A curl of lemon zest too if I'm feeling fancy.

I love scotch, I enjoy bourbon, and I always keep a bottle of Crown on hand.

I recently bought a bottle of Highland Park 12 year (which comes with a sampler of the 18 year!) this will be my first foray into scotches outside of the Speyside or Highland regions.

Red was specifically designed for cocktail use. It's best imbibed as a Scotch and Soda, although a brave soul might try it in a Blood and Sand or Rob Roy. In any case, there are several superior blends in that price range like Famous Grouse and even Cutty or J&B. Walker is a popular brand, but not my favorite by far. You can even get a couple of decent Single Malts at that price point- Glen Moray and Glenfiddich have nice offerings around the $30 mark.

The only Scotch I can afford right now is Clan MacGregor.

I love a good Single Malt Scotch, but damn if they aren't expensive. Maybe in the spring and summer when I start making money again, I'll buy myself a bottle of Glenlivet 12 for my birthday or something.

Clan McGregor isn't the worst. The flavor is a lot like Cutty Sark, except with a wicked earthy grain finish that can sneak up on you. Probably best diluted a bit. Cheers to making money and being able to afford that Glenlivet. Might want to stock up on 12 year when you do, supposedly they're pulling it back from the market a bit due to low stocks (replacing it with the no age statement Founder's Reserve).

Clan MacGregor is my go-to when I want a Scotch and soda, I like the earthy finish that you mentioned. It feels less "diluted" than other Scotch and sodas. As far as single malt goes, I'm on a huge Highland Park kick lately. Just finished up a bottle of the Magnus, incredibly peaty with cinnamon notes and surprisingly affordable. 10/10 would imbibe copiously.
@Syaoran Li make that money! Good luck m8.

I was a Clan McGregor drinker for a while, usually straight out of the bottle, although I've moved up to Smoky Black Grouse when I want a Scotch and Soda so I get a little more smoke. The Highland Park is really wonderful. I'm feeling brave though, so my next big purchase may be cask-strength Laphroiag...

Clan MacGregor is a good Scotch for mixed drinks. It's cheap enough to justify mixing, and it's decent when consumed neat but it really shines when mixed with sodas or in cocktails.

I can make a mean Rob Roy with Clan MacGregor and Gallo Sweet Vermouth, and it even mixes well with Ginger Ale or Pepsi.

I'm self-employed and make my living mowing lawns, weeding gardens, and doing yard work in the Spring and Summer, and raking leaves in Autumn, so Winter is a bit of a lean time for me.
