I think the Cardinals see an opportunity to bring the global hegemony more in line with the Roman Church, where before it's been predominantly protestant. Another concern is how effective American Evangelicals have been in South America recently. They may want a Pope who understands that branch of the faith better if only to cut them off at the knees.

Most Catholics have never heard of the guy that becomes Pope until he gets elected. What I've read so far:
