WHO declares highest alert over monkeypox

The monkeypox outbreak has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.

The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases.

It came at the end of the second meeting of the WHO's emergency committee on the virus.

More than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries, said WHO director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

There had been five deaths so far as a result of the outbreak, he added.

There are only two other such health emergencies at present - the coronavirus pandemic and the continuing effort to eradicate polio.

Dr Tedros said the emergency committee had been unable to reach a consensus on whether the monkeypox outbreak should be classified as a global health emergency.

However, he said the outbreak had spread around the world rapidly and he had decided that it was indeed of international concern.

"The WHO's assessment is that the risk of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region, where we assess the risk as high," he added.

I'm guessing gays won't be required to abstain from horrifying sex acts just like everyone else was forced to give up their freedom of movement for two years?

Since the name "Wuhan Coronavirus" was memory holed for being racist, how long before "monkeypox" is as well?

I thought I saw something about it being renamed somewhere. Didn't catch on. It's been called monkeypox for a long time. It was first observed in lab monkeys in the late 50s.

I think this is a nothingburger. But hopefully no one tries a lockdown.

Hmmm, now I wonder why that would be...?

I remember when this started, some homo Yale medical researcher was flipping out on Twitter because his coworkers were discussing monkeypox, politely suggesting that maybe people have a lockdown on gay drug orgies, y'know, just in order to "flatten the curve".

"Gay drug orgies are a human right" he said. "This is homophobic, and at any rate, lockdowns won't work."

The best part was, this dude had been on record for years as being radically pro-lockdown/pro-jab, even to the point of threatening people with physical violence if they wanted to grill. I've seen some pretty spergy covidiots over the last couple years, but this nigga would easily place in the 90% percentile. The juxtaposition of big brain Yale Med Pro and screaming at anti-lockdown rednecks to GO FUCKING DIE, ASSHOLES, I WANT ALL OF YOU DEAD, was a beautiful sight to behold.

Did anyone here see that? I wish I had an archive of that guy's channel, because he got dogpiled pretty hard. Pretty sure he was on suicide watch by the end of the day.

Monkeypox really is the covid followup the West deserves.

If monkeypox is so serious with the potential of a pandemic, why not start handing out smallpox vaccines right fucking now? Its roughly 85% effective at preventing infection from monkeypox.

Because people are stupid and widespread vaccination would probably cause more vaccinia cases than monkeypox cases prevented. This dude says he did everything right but he still gave it to his wife's boobs, and she gave it to their child:

What I'm talking about is more offering the vaccine to the people who potentially had exposure or even just confirmed cases.
One of the big scandals for this virus is the lack of care infected people are receiving in the US and UK.

While the mortality of monkeypox is low, it shares a number of things with smallpox like the ability to maim and potential debilitating lifelong after effects, a vaccine dose can drastically reduce the chances of that in an infected person if given early.
